Tennessee

Wasn't sure where to post this...

I am a 22 year old college student that rents an apartment. My parents still claim me as a dependent on their tax forms. Are they legally responsible for me if I buy a gun for concealed carry, if I have all of the proper licenses? I work and pay my own bills, but because I am full-time they still claim me. My mom is convinced she is responsible and won't let me get a gun.

Gotta love overprotective and/or paranoid parents.

If you're 21+ years of age, and you purchase a gun... you are responsible. No one else (in regards to possession and use of said gun). It's your record and credentials that are checked upon purchasing a handgun... and it's your butt on the line when it comes to responsibly owning and operating it.

Your parents claiming you on their income forms has zero to do with you owning a handgun. Whether they choose to listen to that is a different story. Good luck.

Your mom sounds as anti-gun as mine

You're a legal adult, you are responsible for yourself. Does your mom think that she would get the ticket if you're the one speeding? It's the same theory.

Everybody has already answered your question I just wanted to point out that you only have to make ONE thread about this........Three(so far) seems to be overkill...

Thanks for the input guys. She was totally convinced that someone could sue her if something happened.

That is technically true. You can sue anyone for anything. You can sue McDonald's for making you fat, but that doesn't mean there is any real liability there.

hahahahah

if I were you and I was paying my own way through college, I wouldn't have even said anything...but since I've owned a firearm since about the age of 12 (.22 single shot rifle was my first) with parental supervision until 18...it was never an issue.

a firearm is a tool, like a crane..if you don't know the ins and outs of it..take a class and then dive in!

you can find any number of instructors here on the board that would be happy to have you in their class!
