Sex Offenders Can Go To (their) Kids' School Events

Sex Offenders Can Go To Kids' School Events - Nashville News Story - WSMV Nashville

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Sex offenders who have children can go to all scheduled events at their children's school, but a local senator is working to change that.

Video: Bill Would Keep Sex Offenders From School Events | Survey: Should Sex Offenders Be Allowed At Schools?

Certain sex offenders can legally go to sporting events, field trips and school plays.

"I never heard of it before," said one parent.

"I was pretty surprised when I found out that that was an exception to the rule," said parent Micca Money.

The law forbids sex offenders from being within 1,000 feet of schools, churches and day cares, but the exception says sex offenders can go to all scheduled school events if their children go to that school. They can go even if their children aren't participating.

It's an exception Clarksville Sen. Tim Barnes is working to eliminate.

"Under current law, we allow sex offenders too much access to school if they have a child that goes to the school," said Barnes.

He recently proposed a bill prohibiting sex offenders from on-campus scheduled activities.

"They can go to parent-teacher conferences but only with the approval and the time set by the administration," Barnes said.

Many but not all of the parents Channel 4 talked with support the change.

"I don't think they should be allowed within 1,000 feet from schools," a parent said.

"There are some people that were sex offenders only bc they had consensual sex with a minor," said Penny Brossett.

"I mean, yeah, it depends on the sex offense, but honestly and truthfully, if they were convicted of a sex crime, then they shouldn't be allowed near children at all," said Money.

This is one of those things that pulls me in two different directions.

First the need to protect kids form true predators.

Next the fact that our government has in effect created a de facto scarlet letter whereby one must go to prison and pay fines then once released continue to be punished for the rest of their lives. For what may or may not be a true predatory crime.

In fact many states allow people who are convicted of such things as public indecency to be placed on the sex offender registry. A 17 year old having consensual sex with his 16 year old G/F. A 21 your old giving his 16 year old cousin a porn mag or DVD.

Its no longer about rape and child rape, incest, child porn or other seriously deviant behavior.

There is a lawsuit in Florida I think where sex offenders are only allowed to live under a bridge because of the number of schools, daycares, parks and playgrounds the city has. There is actually no where the can live except under this bridge that doesn't put them in violation of law.

If you really want to read a Draconian Law go read up on The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act.

Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The law is also an ex post facto law, a law applied retroactively, which is prohibited by the Constitution.

Exactly. Granted, there are plenty of scumbags on it, but there are some truly egregious abuses of it as well.

I saw a news story a couple of years ago about a young couple with an obnoxious problem because of this. When she was 17 the woman had sex with her 15 year old boyfriend. Now she's stuck on the sex offender registry for life. She's married now. They carefully researched where they bought a house. (not to close to a school, church, daycare, etc..) After they bought it, someone found out there was a completely unadvertised private daycare in a house within the proscribed distance of their newly purchased home. She can't live there now. ;)

I agree that it should depend on the offense and when it happened.

I had a guy working for me in Fla. He was a registered sex offender. Seems he impregnated his 15 year old girlfriend when he was 19. By the time I had hired him they had been married for over seven years. Was the guy a sex offender? Yes according to the law. Was he a threat to kids? No.

Yep, that's crazy.

How many Seniors in high school date freshman in highschool? How many Sr's turn 18 even, during their Sr. Year, a ton. One size doesn't fit all.

in wisconsin, if you get caught and convicted of pissing in your yard, lawn, property etc, you are then also considered a sex offender for hte rest of your life under wi law:rolleyes:

wi has become so over regulated that it isn't even a good place to live anymore

In Tn there has to be a four year difference in age before it's legally considered icky

The way it should be.

There's no reason to be pissing in public or in view of others, even if that's in your yard.

The problem is the broad scope of the charge. However, child molesters, rapist ect. have an exceptionally high recidivism rate. Personally I think those charges should be under the death/life penalties. Now the 19 and 16 yr old thing is different and should be considered so, as well as some of the other charges they've lumped in there. Classic case of being tougher on "lesser" crimes has only worked to dilute/lessen the more serious crimes.

See my above post.

In TN that can not happen under the law.

There is no good reason, but is it reason enough to punish somebody with being on a sex predator registry for life? Is taking a leak drunk in an alley way the same as raping a little kid? Because under these laws it's the same offense.

Who hasn't? :death:

But I've never pissed infront of anyone which is what was in question...

If somebody is pissing if front of a kid, then yes.

Being drunk is no excuse for exposing yourself to others.

Doing so would make them a sick person.

Doesn't matter to me if they're just taking a leak or not.

So it's only illegal if you're caught? Consider the "what if" of you thinking that you can't be seen at the time but a woman can see you, and she reports you to the police...what then? I hardly think that ranks up there with a sexual predator.

Pissing outside is not, in any way, sexual let alone a sex crime. Whether it is in front of someone (adult OR child) or not. The idea that accidently seeing somebody elses genitalia automatically means they should be convicted of a sex crime is absolutely ridiculous.

The sex registry is one of those things that I completely disagree with.

You commit the crime, you do the time. That's what I learned in school. What happened to "Paying your debt to society" and then moving on with your life? It's rather hard to move on when you are punished for the rest of your life.

If these people are so dangerous to society then why are they released from prison in the first place! Once they have served their time that should be the end of their punishment.

And why are the so called "sex crimes" worse than other crimes? Where is the Murderer Registry or Violent Offender Registry. Perhaps a DUI registry as well. And while we are at it let's get a Jaywalking Registry.

Exposing your sexual organs to someone is a sex crime.

If you don't want to be labeled as such, then don't piss in public where others may see you.

I'm with you on this. I have seen the positive of the Sex Offenders Registry first hand. Simply put, you know who is around you and who to keep an eye on, especially for those of us with kids. On the other hand, after seeing some of the people and their charges on there, you can see that there are a few that quite frankly don't belong.

One would expect a level of common sense to enter into the equation, however, this is not the case in these situations and many more like them, especially when the legal system, educational system, governmental system, etc. is involved.

I got one for ya'll talking about pissing in front of kids. How were ya'll taught or how did your boys get taught to to pee? I have a 3 year old that the only way you could get him to go to the bathroom was to let him pee off the porch.

In scouts, out in the woods camping, or out hunting, or fishing, this happens, with grown men and their sons, just part of growing up, you piss off the porch, on trees, off that back bumper of the truck, or even out of the boat (moving at an appropriate speed). It happens, it's not sexual, it's all about releaving yourself! Like I said, common sense needs to enter into things at times. But as someone said, "Common sense isn't so common anymore."
