Gun Owners of America

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Gun Owners of America-backed candidate Christine O'Donnell completed a dramatic come-from-behind victory in Tuesday's Delaware Senate primary.

O'Donnell was up against a member of Congress who earned the notorious distinction as the most anti-gun Republican in the House. But despite the backing of the Republican establishment in Washington, Mike Castle was handily defeated by pro-gunner O'Donnell.

The implications of this win are huge, not only for the next session of Congress, but also in a potential lame-duck session later this year. Because this is a special election to fill the seat of Vice-President Joseph Biden, O'Donnell will take office immediately following the November election if she defeats her Democrat opponent.

Anti-gun congressional Democrat leaders seem intent on a lame duck session, but the addition of just a single constitutionalist to the Senate will go a long way towards stopping any gun control from sneaking through in the waning days of 2010.

Unfortunately, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has already tried to pull the rug out from under Christine O'Donnell by announcing that the Committee will not support her campaign in the general election. It is an outrage that the NRSC would have spent millions of dollars on an anti-gunner, while it is not interested in helping a pro-gun constitutionalist.

But Christine won the primary without their help, and GOA will be sure to work with its grassroots network to drive support to the O'Donnell campaign. You can contact NRSC Chairman John Cornyn at info@nrsc.org to express your outrage at this decision.

Also on Tuesday, Ovide Lamontagne defeated the establishment candidate in the Republican primary in New Hampshire, in a race to replace retiring anti-gun Senator Judd Gregg. Lamontagne also earned the endorsement of GOA.

The O'Donnell and Lamontagne wins add to a string of victories for GOA-backed candidates this year in Senate primaries in Nevada, Kentucky, Utah, Colorado, as well as the non-primary in Florida (where Marco Rubio chased Gov. Charlie Crist out of the primary -- and out of the Republican Party).

All of the candidates supported by GOA-PVF were opposed by the Republican establishment in their respective primaries. And all of these candidates agree with Gun Owners of America that it is not enough simply to defeat anti-gunners in elections. They must also be replaced with leaders who will fight to restore Constitutional liberties that have been under attack for decades. (You can visit Home to keep up with GOA candidates.)

It is safe to say that the 2010 elections may be the most important in our lifetimes, with America's constitutional republic hanging in the balance.

And make no mistake, if establishment Republicans like Mike Castle were victorious in their primaries, it would not matter which party was in control of Congress. Both parties in Washington are guilty of growing the federal government at the expense of the peoples' liberty.

But candidates supported by GOA -- pro-freedom champions like O'Donnell, Sharron Angle, Rand Paul, and Marco Rubio, to name just a few -- have no intention of coming to Washington to blend into the woodwork. If most or all of these candidates win in November, it will go a long way toward slamming the brakes on the anti-gun, socialist Obama agenda.

So we are really in the midst of exciting times, and GOA is looking forward to working with a slew of new members of Congress to protect and restore the right to keep and bears arms as the Founders intended.

Of course, GOA is only effective because of the activism and support of hundreds of thousands of members and supporters.

PS -- Please don't forget to express your outrage at NRSC Chairman John Cornyn's decision NOT to support pro-gunner Christine O'Donnell in the general election, now that she won the primary. You can email info@nrsc.org to send a message.

Between Karl Rove and Mitch McConnel, I think the establishment is about to meltdown.

I'm glad she won. I would gladly take my chances on a citizen than a seasoned old so-

called Republican/RINO/liberal. It was interesting on RedState.com, the last few days.

She was polarizing, to say the least.

She's also more proof the Tea Party is having an impact.

Joe Miller beat Murkowski

Several more new candidates. Might not make 51, but it sure makes it easier to get to it

during the next cycle.

We can at least stop the "Socialist" march.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The stunning victory Tuesday by a tea party-backed candidate in the Delaware’s U.S. Senate primary election has roiled the Republican party and given Democrats fresh hope that they can keep control of the Senate in the November elections.

The Delaware divide

Little-known conservative Christine O-Donnell, 41, pulled off a major upset by defeating moderate Republican Mike Castle, 53%-47%, in a low-turnout primary. The result reverberated across the political landscape, rousing tea party members, dispiriting mainstream Republicans and delighting Democrats.

Until a few weeks ago the 71-year-old Castle, the state’s lone congressman for 17 years, had been expected to romp in the primary and beat his Democratic opponent in the fall. O’Donnell got a big boost after former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin endorsed her, drawing fresh attention to O’Donnell’s campaign.

Yet the upset could now cost the Republicans a sure victory and deprive the party of a chance to recapture the Senate from the Democrats, strategists believe. Republicans need to win 10 seats to take back control.

“We were looking at eight to nine seats in the Senate. We are now looking at seven to eight in my opinion,” Republican strategist Karl Rove said in a Fox News interview. “This is not a race we’re going to be able to win.”

Tea party-backed candidates have beaten mainstream Republicans in several Senate primaries, including Utah, Kentucky, Nevada and Alaska. O’Donnell might have the thinnest record of any tea party winner. She is not a longtime lawmaker like Republican nominee Sharron Angle of Nevada and doesn’t have an impressive resume like Joe Miller of Alaska.

Angle and Miller, who were supported by the tea party, knocked out candidates backed by the Republican establishment.

Another tea party candidate, Ovide Lamontagne, appeared on the verge of a close loss in New Hampshire to party favorite Kelly Ayotte, a former state attorney general. With most of the votes in, Ayotte had a slight lead.

The tea party, a movement that didn’t even exist until 2009, has suddenly put fear in politicians in Washington and state capitols around the country. Provoked by sharply higher federal spending and rising U.S. deficits, the tea party is pushing for a more limited government that spends within its means.

The rise of the tea party could unwittingly aide Democrats in several Senate contests, most likely Nevada and Delaware. Several election trackers, The Cook Political Report and the Rothenburg Political Report, quickly moved Delaware to the “leans Democrat” column from “leans Republican” after O’Donnell’s win.

The O’Donnell win is already causing recriminations in the Republican party. Some top Republicans and several conservative magazines attacked O’Donnell before she was elected as unfit for office — a rarity in Republican ranks — drawing fierce attacks from tea party supporters. Others have criticized Palin for undermining Republican candidates with a better chance to win in the general election.

The division caused by her victory could be summed up by a tweet sent out by Tony Fratto, a former spokesman for President George W. Bush: “Seriously — I never realized there were that many kooky people in Delaware.”

Democrats, meanwhile, are giddy at the prospect of retaining the Delaware Senate seat that was held by Joseph Biden from 1973 until he was elected vice president in 2008. And they are already painting Republicans as to extreme to appeal to the broader public.

“I think it shows there is a deep civil war that’s going on in the Republican party,” said Tim Kaine, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, in an NBC interview. “I think the message is moderates aren’t welcome. Moderates, keep out.”

Yet even though the brunt of the tea party’s impact so far has fallen on Republicans, Democrats could also face the whirlwind come fall. Tea party supporters lean heavily Republican and are likely to turn out big in the fall elections. Polls also show Democrats trailing far behind Republicans in surveys of which party they favor most.

After her victory, O’Donnell said no one in either party should take anything for granted in the current political climate.

“This is a very unpredictable political season where anything goes, “she said, “but the folks are craving candidates who are willing to stand for something.”

She may have a difficult time, but she's motivated. With the support of her fellow Republicans,

and the Tea Party orgs, she can win. We'll see. She proved she can win one battle. She also

put the establishment on notice. I like that. It's the only way you can take your country back,

by engaging.

Also, Murkowski hasn't backed Miller in Alaska, yet. She is a sore loser

like Castle, rapidly becoming irrelevant.

The republican party has changed their tune and are now going to back her. Castle is still saying he will not support her.

Ha - Maybe the result of many calls from angry Republican voters, you think?

Great News: National Republicans Now Pledging to Support O'Donnell in Delaware!

Wednesday, September 15, 2010 (update)

Hopefully, you have already seen our earlier alert from today, relaying the good news about pro-gun candidates around the country.

In Delaware, Christine O'Donnell upset the Washington establishment by defeating the anti-gun Mike Castle, who is one of the most liberal Republicans in the Congress.

Last night, the National Republican Senatorial Committee indicated there would be no money for O'Donnell, and so we asked you to pound Sen. John Cornyn to demand that he reverse course.

Well, Fox News is now reporting that things have changed, as the NRSC has done an about face after getting "peppered" by angry constituents. The NRSC is now singing a different tune. Here's what a Congressional newspaper, The Hill, is reporting in our nation's capital today:

[sen. John] Cornyn said that O'Donnell, the conservative insurgent candidate who upset Rep. Mike Castle last night in the Delware GOP Senate primary, would have the NRSC's backing like any other Republican Senate candidate.

"Let there be no mistake: The National Republican Senatorial Committee -- and I personally as the committee's chairman -- strongly stand by all of our Republican nominees, including Christine O'Donnell in Delaware," Cornyn said in a statement.

The chairman of Senate Republicans' campaign efforts said he'd spoken Wednesday morning to O'Donnell and informed her of the NRSC's support, which included the maximum allowable $42,000 in direct donations to her campaign.

This is huge! Especially, considering that the NRSC had earlier indicated it would NOT help O'Donnell in her race to win "Joe Biden's" seat in the general election.

Thank you all for your activism!

In the New Hampshire primary, early returns gave Ovide Lamontagne the edge toward victory. But in late vote counting, the totals have switched and now he is currently behind by less than 1,000 votes.

GOA will continue to update gun owners around the country as to how these hot races are shaping up. To stay current, please be sure to visit Home .

I think Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Hannity and Levin gave her the go-ahead.

She can win this race. Even in DE, her opponent, being an avowed marxist,

helps her with dem voters. I see good things happening.

I have never contributed to political campaigns before, but I was so ticked last night over Rove's comments that I finally took the attitude of "f*** 'em." I ended up donating a few minutes ago to the O'Donnell campaign. I have had the belief for quite some time that the beltway republican establishment will lead us to the same miserable place the marxist leftists will, albeit more slowly.

Welp, if the few reports concerning her finances are true, she manages her money like a Democrat, lol. There's also the whole "degree-no degree-master's??" issue from her lawsuit against a former employer. The stuff I've read about that suit and who she's suing, provided it's not adulterated for slant, is quite ironic considering. Granted, finding unbiased information about political candidates(or anything for that matter) is about as likely as encountering an ice factory in Hell.

Besides being a pretty face with a nice smile and good teefiez, I don't know any more about her. With as big a deal as this is being made out to be, you'd think the whole country would know who she is. Anyone here have the goods on her?

Yesterday was looking at Castle's record, and it looks like even if O'Donnel loses, the democrat won't be any worse in office than Castle, and possibly better.

Depends on one's attitude. As a libertarian, socially-liberal fiscally-conservative, it looked like Castle voted the wrong way on personal freedom and fiscal issues, and the only 'conservative' votes he made were on red-meat moral majority issues that are none of the government's business to EVER legislate.

So if O'Donnel loses, the democrat will probably vote just like Castle on the fiscal issues, and he might make saner votes on things that are none of the government's business.

Also, electing a 71 year old career politician to a 6 year term? I'm not a spring chicken and ain't "anti-old-folk", but we really don't need a bunch of ancient politicians in washington. People just lose their edge and energy too much when they get that old, even if they have the correct attitude otherwise. Congress ought to have some kind of age limit.

Do you wonder who digs-up these stories, after-the-fact? I rather take my chances on her than on the guy she defeated.

Pete

the same people who dig up stories on all candidates running for office, duh! :(

If they aren't true, fine. If they are, I guess the people of Delaware are hoping that past action isn't indicative of future performance. Might as well give her a shot. If they don't like her, they can vote her out. I just want the truth on her, especially if she's the first in a line of Tea Party candidates.

Valid points and reason to be concerned come the General election. The right-leaning moderates may very well jump ship.

2 things to clear up some points previous:

1. Lamontagne (the GOA endorsed candidate) did not end up winning in NH. Kelly Ayotte did (Palin endorsee), but only by ~1800 votes, so there may be more recount drama coming. Both of these candidates are very solid, so either should be able to fill Gregg's shoes.

2. While being shed of Castle is nice, Coons, the Dem who will replace him if his side wins, is considered a "bearded Marxist", i.e. he is going to be the most collectivist member of the Senate if elected. His views are left of the Dems as a whole across the board. That's worse than Castle, so let's hope O'Donnell can make a real race out of this, and the citizens of DE can be persuaded to vote for O'Donnell. Coons will not only be a disaster for the next six years, he'll be a disaster for 30 - once DE elects a Senator, they keep him in place until he dies or becomes VP.

Ayotte's opponent has conceded and has endorsed

her. That was the only one yesterday that had two

good people running and had the grace to act like

adults. Castle won't endorse O'Donnel and that's

a shame, just like that witch Murkowski in AK.

Odonnel's donations have reached past 750k

in 24 hours. I'll bet you she does win. Her

results show that the Tea Party is fooling a

lot of people. Not bragging, but I've been

saying this for quite a while. Give these

folks any kind of support you can. It's the

real deal.

Did someone say witch ? ;)

O’Donnell says if she were a witch, she’d turn Rove into a ‘Newt’ — Who’s News 9-20-10 | Politerati

"The Republican candidate for Delaware's U.S. Senate seat on Sunday addressed revelations that she dabbled in witchcraft, laughing off her 11-year-old on-screen confession about it as an example of nothing more than teenage experimentation."

"That witchcraft comment on Bill Maher, I was in high school! How many of you didn't hang out with questionable folks in high school?" she asked the assembled at a Sussex County Republican Party picnic and rally, where she was the featured speaker.

"But no, there's been no witchcraft since. If there was, Karl Rove would be a supporter now," O'Donnell joked at the Lincoln, Del., event. Rove has been a sharp critic of O'Donnell's since she won an upset victory over Delaware Rep. Mike Castle ® in the state's GOP primary last Tuesday. On Sunday, Rove raised questions about her witchcraft comments. "In southern Delaware there are a lot of churchgoing people," he said on "Fox News Sunday." "They're going to want to know what that is all about."

If DE is like most places in the country right now, they'll be willing to overlook all manner of personal oddities if they believe they can trust one candidate over the other with respect to their hard-earned money. Sure, if you were to build a perfect candidate from scratch, you'd never come up with Ms. O'Donnell - but you might prefer her over Coons. One is fairly goofy, by the accounts we've been fed via the MFM...the other is a steadfast party hack in lockstep with the current administration, who was originally thrown up as a candidate in assumption of a bloodbath vs. Mike Castle. He's not a "serious" candidate either, and if the vetting process is done quick enough, the skeletons will come running out of his closet soon enough.

For example: http://patterico.com/2010/09/19/leftist-activist-in-delaware-chris-coons-harassed-me-due-to-my-political-activism/

There's the tip of the iceberg...the bad stuff about O'Donnell came out in the primary, while Coons remains un-vetted. I doubt that he'll get the white-glove Obama '08 treatment - his past is going to be mined for every misstep, and I'll bet there are plenty of those from a guy who ran his county like a kingdom and bankrupted it in the process.

But Coons doesn't have the disadvantage of being estranged from his own party (yet). And I can completely understand why the GOP has been trying to distance itself from her: Rough Sketch - Christine O'Donnell on human mice, lying to Nazis, and the women of Middle Earth

Losing a Senate seat to the Dems because of this lady's loony past = buyer's remorse. Rove is on the money with this one.

Yeh, if you are running for office nowadays, the dirt will come out, whether or not

it really is dirt. I doubt O'Donnell is the problem as much as Rove is a moderate

cheering and in the background advising the wrong candidate. O' Donnell may not

be the best candidate but she is the best one out of the choices, and she should beat

the "bearded marxist" Coons. Otherwise, the corporation state has gone the toilet.

Murkowski is acting like a witch to her supposed roots in the Republican Party in AK,

by being a sore loser and not willing to give up her "power" that was originally handed

to her by her father. That primary election was evidently fair and she should have

been graceful when conceding and given her support to the victor. That's happened

several times this election cycle and is successful in showing voters who the real RINO's

are. They will ultimately fail in their attempts and will be pushed out of the reformed

party.

It's happening in the Democrat party elections, too. That bunch is not talking about health care,

or are openly against it, just to get elected. I wonder why the Dems are "firewalling" certain

races? Is it because they know they woke a sleeping giant?

It has become time for a "citizen legislator", instead of a "professional politician". Do you

hear that Lamar and Bob?
