I am receiving my orders today from the USAF. My job is going to be in the intelligence field and I was wondering if we had any current or former Intel that could give me a heads up as what to expect. Thanks for any help. I know Intel covers a wide range of things but any help or advice is more than I have now.

I assume you're going to be going to a AF "school" to "learn your basics...from my experiences in the NAVY with INTEL "spooks" ( I worked in 2 CVIC's...)...once you get out of school you'll either be doing "mission planning" or maybe even MSI (multi sensory interpretation)...ie...looking at photographic intel...IF you wanna be ahead of the game...know how to recognize various types of combat aircraft...armour...ships etc...READ a LOT...in the INTEL biz...you are usually giving the higher ups a well thought out "educated" GUESS...good luck...and thank you for steppin up and serving this GREAT NATION

I was Army intel and my wife was Air Force intel. It really depends on which intel you're going to be doing? Voice intercept? Analyst? Imagery? Human intelligence? Counterintelligence? Give us your job description and maybe I can give you a better idea about how they lied to you.

Brandon,

I was in USAF intel, 20250 and 20350 if they still use AFSC's. Used to be called USAFSS. Just be sure you like to write reports.

In the Navy...the linguistics folks were called Cryptographic Techs...specializing in numerous languages...they could speak...read and write their specific language...totally different area from the INTEL Specialists

Sorry guys. A little leary of putting it out there. Airborne ISR Operater.

No need to be leery. The MOS itself is not classified. If it was you wouldn't know about it.

They had a similar specialty in the Army but it wasn't from an airborne platform. Goodfellow AFB is a good place to do tech school. Everyone in San Angelo gives a military discount and the vast majority of folks there actually appreciate you. It's hotter than hades during the summer though but at least it's a dry heat. Yes it does make a difference. I'm not sure how much time out in San Angelo you'll have with only 77 days of tech school though.

The one thing you'll want to remember is to keep your badge visible while in the SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility). The SP's are are like rabid pit bulls and they get a major chub any time they get the chance to put someone they see several times a day for months on end on the ground and stick their M16 in your face. I have no doubt they go back to the barracks every time it happens and dance naked and sacrifice chickens or some such B.S. Yea, they're that bad.

Other than that, depending on the security clearance required to do the job, be prepared to answer a lot of questions, most of them multiple times. Your friends and family may also be questioned depending on the type of background investigation required so if you have any public skeletons in your past just get them out up front. Don't get caught lying to the investigators if you actually want to have a clearance. I knew more than one person that got caught and were immediately booted from training.

If you have any further questions feel free to ask. PM if you need to and if necessary I will give you my phone # and answer what I can. Of course some stuff falls under the "I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you" category but other than that I will be glad to tell you what I know.

Lagerhead is correct...when the paperwork says background check...it really IS...they will go DEEP...and ABSOLUTELY have the skeletons out of the closet and on display...IF you don't...they will come back for "CLARIFICATION"...because THEY will find out about your skeletons...LOL...happened to me.

Lagerhead, thank you for the info. Much appreciated. It requires a TS clearance so I'm sure this thread itself will be brought up, hints the concern with saying ANYTHING. Thanks again for the clarification and info. I'm quite excited about the opportunities that lay ahead and, of course, to serve my country.

MustangDave I don't feel like I have any skeletons so I guess we'll all be surprised if they find any. Ha

Any time Brandon. Just don't read too much into your security clearance. You don't have one yet so nothing you can say at this point is of any vital interest. You just don't know anything yet that could come back to haunt you. To tell the truth you could tell everything you know about the program at this point and it wouldn't amount to a hill of beans in their investigation. Believe me, when you are given information that's classified they will tell you in no uncertain terms in about 3 different ways.

Congratulations to ya young man.:koolaid:

Serving in the Air Force is a wonderful choice. My dad and most of my Uncles were Air Force but I just had to be different and went into the Army and ended up kicking myself darn near every day......well not really I did enjoy it..... sometimes anyway.

My children and I THANK YOU for continuing the mission. Our entire Nation is very lucky and very grateful to have young folks like yourself.:)

FWIW my use of blue fonts has always been a tribute to my dad and all those who served in the AF. Like I said I always have to be different and to be honest Army OD green is just too darn ugly to use even if it was available.;)

Be Safe and Stand Tall out in the Wild Blue Yonder:)
