Well, there are reasons the Maverick is cheaper than the 500 aside from the position of the safety, but I'd say it's just as reliable as a home defense weapon.

Not much really. Cosmetics for the most part. Trigger assemblies are interchangeable. Barrels are interchangeable. Forearm assemblies are interchangeable. 500 has a longer warranty. 88's are only offered in synthetic stocks. 88's also won't accept some aftermarket goodies on offered for the 500. Just a cheaper version for those on a budget. As a home defence shotgun it's not bad.

And those are the reasons that the Mav 88 is cheaper. Good job. :)

after putting several in my hand, some Mossberg 88's, 500's, rem. 870's

I almost got 88 for good price, but I found a Rem 870 that just called to me.

I felt the 88 would do what I wanted it for,

I just didn't like the location of the safety on the 500's and knowing how I am later I might want to modify it, the 88 would be limited and that was my decision to go with the 870.

I will tell you, other then the location of the safety, I really liked the 590a1.

The Rem 870 I got has black synthetic, 18 inch Barrel 12 Ga, CYL bore, and has a factory 2 shot extended mag tube.

The Safety is just like my hunting rifle

I am ready to go test it out.

That's what I wound up getting when I bought mine. I also fondled an NEF, and wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I was trying to save a few bucks.

Yup, I plan to add a light to be next.

As people have told me, the most terrifying sound a burglar can hear is a shot gun pump, and I have corrected them by saying in my house that is not the sound this first burglar will hear. If there is a second burglar he may hear BOOM, and the pump before shot 2.

Get a cheap wood butt stock. Chop it down, round it out with a wood rasp or a dremel, smooth it with some sand paper, then stretch a section of bicycle inner tube over it. You have the following short, easily maneuverable, easy to handle birds-head style pistol grip:
