Royal Blue Firing Range

I live just north of Kville and have heard about the Royal Blue Firing Range and that it is free. Went to find it one time and it seems that you have to have a WMA 'pass' to get to it and I have also heard that you may have to have a hunting permit for it. Anyone been there or know about it that could give me some info.

We could not get on the property without the WMA permits.

That's pretty much the way I read the signs yesterday, about 1/4 mile prior to the entrance to the range. I always understood that at least one person in (or on) a vehicle had to have a permit.

The statement on the TWRA site here: Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - North Cumberland Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) Riding Area states that these permits "must be purchased for horseback riding, bicycling, and ORV use." I'll see if I can get some clarification from TWRA as to whether or not that applies to driving a standard car/truck to access the shooting range.

Per my chat with TWRA, the North Cumberland WMA land use permit is not required as long as you are in transit to and from the range in a car/truck.

I also called the local ffl/sports shop and they advised the same.

Thinking out loud: Why would a land use permit not be required to use the land for shooting but is required to use the land for OHV?

"Horseback riding, bicycling, and ORV use" and they want the fee. Driving through to the range doesn't require it. Does it make sense? Not really. Their logic probably has something to do with the fee being used for trail maintenance. Staying on the "road" and you're not technically using the trails.

Its TWRA. Not that I don't appreciate what they do, but a lot of rules/regs don't necessarily make sense.
