Selling and shipping a pistol to California

Recommended Posts

Looking for some advice and your experience on how to sell and ship a pistol to a buyer in California.

I listed a pistol on armslist and have had a couple different people in CA asking about it and whether I'd be able to ship it to an FFL there. What would the process be to protect myself and do this legally? Should I have an FFL here ship it? What sort of paperwork do I need to protect myself?

Thanks for any help!

My advice, don't.  CA has some crazy laws that you could violate unintentionally.  I know of one lgs that will not ship to CA.  To much of a headache.

Surely you can find someone else to sell this gun to...

What is it that you are selling? Because you first need to see if it is legal for sale in Ca or not, you can find that out from the FFL your buyer chooses. The FFL would tell you if they accept shipping from private parties or if you have to go through another FFL in TN.

I think it is pretty simple.

If the gun is legal in CA, you ship it to a verified FFL holder, possibly from your local FFL to theirs, on the buyer's dime for all charges.  The CA FFL is responsible for the rest of it (paperwork, whatever).  This is exactly like shipping to ANY other state, except for the exotic bans and strangeness of CA laws.

I have no idea what happens if you sent a 15 round pistol to CA or something.   You may not get it back, it may be destroyed on the spot before it can contaminate their state.
