Another option is to get a bond.  It may or may not work for you in your financial situation.  It worked well for me when I was single, had 6 or 7 vehicles (all older stuff not worth much), and not much else, and rented my house.  A bond follows the driver, not the vehicle, so you are covered on anything that you operate.  I still have a bond but it only covers me for $10,000, I now carry additional insurance on all but a couple vehicles which do not get operated on the street very often.  A bond runs me about $400 per year.  Now that I'm married, and own a home, wife has a nice car, etc.  I'm not as comfortable with just having a bond.  When this one expires I'm going to see about upping it to around $100K or so, I think that I would be comfortable with that level of coverage.

Just weigh the advantages and disadvantages.  When I first got a bond if I were sued for hitting something there wasn't much they could get.  Now I could easily be homeless.  Evaluate your own situation accordingly.

Wouldn't my medical insurance cover the majority of that?

Actually, probably not. When I had my wreck I was told at the hospital that only two healthcare plans in tn cover vehicle accidents. They rely on the auto insurance to cover mechanical since it is mandatory in tn.
