Check for stolen gun

Reading the thread on gun registering got me to thinking...let's say I'm making a FTF purchase, is there a way I can run the serial number to check if it is reported "stolen" before I complete the transaction?

This comes up over and over. Any gunshop can run a check on a firearm for you. Its free. It is technically required that both the gun and the gun owner be physically in the vicinity of the shop. The check is with local law enforcement.

Most any local PD will run it for free, most require you have gun with you so

it can be taken in if stolen and you will want the printout of the run. This

is in case Gramps finds it missing from attic two years from now and turns

it in as stolen. You now have a stolen gun but can prove it was not when

you bought it.

This is a good idea. Ive heard of people selling guns and waiting a few years and reporting them stolen and getting their gun back for free after it had exchanged hands a few times.

You would have to be dumber than chit to try that. It would be pretty easy to find yourself facing felony charges.
