Uppers? Lowers? Huh?

Ok - So I see a lot of talk about people buying lowers.. And you can find some uppers here... etc. I don't understand what exactly these two pieces are. The upper, it seems, contains the barrel and the receiver for the AR. The lower is just the stock? Which pieces can be bought and ordered without an FFL? Which can't?

The stripped lower is the only part that requires an FFL...its what everything mounts to and also what has the serial #. Everything else can be bought with no background check and even mailed to your front step courtesy of the United States Postal Service if you so wish.

You can go to www.del-ton.com for an in-depth look at different parts and their names and such.

After looking here, It looks like you could get a 16" A2 rifle kit for $465. which includes everything BUT a stripped lower.

Now you said that the lower had the S/N and requires an FFL to purchase. They sell a stripped lower for $105.

So, I could get these two items, assuming FFL transfer for the lower for $570 + T/T/S&H... True?

After all of this, WTF is a tax stamp for and is one required here?

Excuse my ignorance, but I've really been looking at these just incase we don't get lucky in November...

The tax stamp would be for a SBR (short barreled rifles). Using a barrel shorter than the 16" NFA standard length. (i.e. 7.5", 10.5", 11.5", 12", 14")

Tax stamps also come into play when you're looking at suppressors, AOW, etc.

With the stripped lower... you'll also need the stock, buffer tube, buffer and spring, lower parts kit, etc.

Cool. Wasn't sure what you were looking at specifically. Just tossing out gee whiz info. :tough:

Info is what I was looking for...

So... Does this look like it would fit the bill + a stripped lower?

I am good with my hands and usually prefer to build things myself so I know how they work.

Do you guys think that a smart monkey that follows instructions and had good attention to detail and a moderate knowledge of firearms could pull this off?

1. Good with your hands

2. Smarter than a monkey

Easily done. Go forth and prosper.

The AR is the simplest firearm to put together. "Even a caveman could do it."

The only equipment you really need is a punch and maybe a pair of pliars depending on how your wanting to put the trigger guard and bolt release pins in.

Go for it!

Hero Gear says nothing but good things about them. I have only heard of good experiences. Pirate I would suggest you look into a Spikes or Tactical Innovations lower...I prefer the tactical innovations because it has a couple of um.... tactical innovations ;-D They run about $125 on the skreet. Check with any of our friendly vendors here for a great deal on either of the aformentioned stripped lowers.

Del-Tons kits are already assembled and headspaced so the upper is all ready to go...if my reading comprehension is correct.

yeah, i'm the guy that throws something out there without reading first....so i didn't even try to comprehend. i'll trust your comprehension. although it would suck to plan on getting a built upper and get a box of parts....
