If I remember correctly it is a 44spl which IMO is like shooting a 45. The price for the gun is good if the condition is exceptable to you.
Ammo is expensive for plinking if you don't reload.

The only reason I sold mine a couple of years ago is I just don't like da only guns. Now my hands can't handle the recoil on the 44spl or for that matter 45acp.

The 296 is interesting and 44spl is about the equivalent of a 45acp. I have passed on one for only a few bucks more than that but it missing the original presentation case.  Although I have forever been in search of the 7 shot S&W 242 in .357 mag.

I'm a huge fan of the .44 Special and own several. One of my favorites is my 696 which is the all stainless 3" L-frame.

The recoil of a .44 Special isn't bad in an all steel gun. But, due to a touch of arthritis in my hands, I think I would probably pass on this light weight.as It would have a hefty kick to it. But that's just me.

Also, S&W limits this model to 200gr bullets or less.

OTOH, these were only made for three years, 1999-2001, and usually sell in the $500-700 range. For $400, I'd be sorely tempted.
