Unless it's listed as a pistol, I think it would bew a violation of the law. I'm not sure but I did ask the question about a receiver that I bought as a rifle recevier and wanted to make an Ar pistol. Said it was a big NO NO.

Someone with more knowledge (AKA FFL) will be along to give correct info.

Depends on how the receiver was 4473'd to you. If you bought it as a pistol lower your good to go, can build rifle or pistol. If you bought it as a rifle it's always a rifle and trying to make it a pistol will result in jail time if caught with it. That's how the law is on lowers as I have been told and understand it. It's possible an FFL could change the class since it hasn't been built yet, but I think it's once a rifle always a rifle, once a pistol can be either.

If you bought it as a bare receiver then on the 4473 it should be "receiver" when the store employee had to write down what is on the third page. The form specifically has pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun, receiver, and other. So you should be able to make into a pistol, rifle, or SBR with a form 1.
