I'm also looking into pistol calibers. I've been wanting one for some time now and I've pretty well landed on 9mm. I was thinking seriously about .45 but a while back another TGO member, a childhood friend and I were out shooting on the friends farm. We had targets set at 100 & 130 yards and decided to take turns shooting pistols at those distances. My M&P 9mm was shooting fairly flat at 100 and a couple feet low at 130 and then I switched to .45 which was like 10-12' low at 130. I wasn't upset about it but it made me lean heavily toward the 9mm for an AR upper. Not that I'm looking to get an ultra precision long distance rifle out of it but I wouldn't mind being in the same zip code at 100. The 10mm sounds intriguing though. I'm not familiar with the cartridge other than its a .40 projectile. What would you compare it too? Btw, Rock River has some decent pistol uppers as well as CMMG but that's about as far as I've gotten with it.

My neighbor and friend were shot last night
Luke E. replied to TripleDigitRide's topic in General Chat
Man you are right, that kind of thing can happen anywhere. A handful of years back a couple friends were over at the house one night, I had worked a little late and was getting ready and we were all headed out to eat dinner. Now I live well out into the country and never imagined what would take place that night. We were headed to the door when all the sudden I hear someone running up my front steps talking about a gun. The door started swinging open and I lunged towards it and kicked it shut knocking whoever it was off the porch. I grabbed the pistol out from under my chair cushion and cracked the door and that's when I saw My neighbors 13-14 year old boy walking back towards his house so I ran out to him because something didn't seem right. I got him spun around, he'd been shot 8 times 2 or 3 of them in the head and the rest from there down to his thighs. I grabbed him and rushed him into my house and luckily one of the friends that was there was a paramedic so he got started on him right away as I tried to figure out what was going on. When I asked him where his parents were here looked up at me a said "I think Momma and Daddy are dead" I asked him who did this and he replied that his cousin (who as I found out later was at that very moment up at their Grandfathers watching tv eating ice cream) I asked him if he was still there and he said no and that he had said he was out of ammo. I took over with the 911 call and let them know what had happened and where the boy was which somehow translated into busting into my house with rifles on us. They ended up putting a chopper down in my front yard to try to get one of the parents somewhere for help but she died before the chopper got on the ground. The boy made it and is now married and a father who now places a lot of faith in being armed. So yes, this stuff can happen anywhere and even to your very own friends and neighbors. -
It will burn just fine, my great grandfather to me when I was young that it was I believe Navajo legend. Something about it being bad luck or the gods didn't approve or something like that. In reality so struck trees light easier than store bought starter logs and burn super hot. Only place I've ever seen it is in Florida but it happens if lightening hits or a storm blows it over at certain time of the year when the sap is running. My family has always called it "lightered wood" and it can lay out in the woods for good and not rot because it gets sort of petrified. I always have a few big knots of it around the house to split of as fire starter but NEVER put it near you regular wood where someone might mistakenly throw it in the stove as it puts out a horrible amount of smoke if burned in quantity and burns way to hot.. Ask me how I know that! A friend threw wood in my stove for me and a few minutes later the stove was glowing red up above the fire brick!

Two reasons, enfield hit on one. Falling a dead tree is quite dangerous, while working underneath it you could cause a portion of the top to come down on you Second, something caused that still standing tree to die, most likely an insect of some type. Termites are one thing that can be in them because they cannot like but a few brief seconds out in the open air. They live in the ground so the dead tree offers them wood without having to build tubes like they would in order to infest a home. Not all standing dead trees will have them obviously but I've never been around a dead tree that wasn't full of the little roaches and no one wants to drag those in the house if they can help it.

The walmart by me sells lots of different rifles as well, I have seen all of the guns you mentioned there and they seem to keep those in stock. That being said, your Walmart rocks! I've never seen one that carried reloading supplies.

Asked "my" rep (Scott DesJarlais) about his 2A stance...
Luke E. replied to Pat's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Scott is a United States congressman and is a great one to contact about national issues but if you are interested in making your voice heard on the parking lot bill you would be better served speaking with your State Representative. Whats cooler about the State Rep. is that you stand a better chance of actually speaking with him rather than a staffer. -
^this^ I even go one step further and split up my round wood and split wood as well as splitting them up lightly seasoned and well seasoned... I'm a bit of an over achiever with it but each type of wood has it's place and when done right you end up with very even heat.

Got to get a hold of one at a shop down in Florida a little while back. I don't own one but it is on my lengthy "short" list. Really nice feeling gun but would love to get behind one, I would have had the opportunity to shoot it if they would have had ammo on hand but I had none of mine with me there for I did not shoot

We went all last winter without turning on the propane central heat and air unit.. We have a large wood stove in the living room and with a small fan behind it we stayed hot most of the time. I would get it pretty hot just before bed and throw a large hackberry log on as I shut everything down for the night then stick a large green-ish Oak log on before I left for work. The only time it got cold in the house is if one of us didn't come straight home after work but that wasn't often. It is a lot of work so if you don't enjoy tending to it, don't plan on it for your main heat source. When our A/C unit went out this summer I switched to a heat pump so we will likely lean on it a little more this winter. Nothing beats backing up to a wood stove when your cold to the bone IMO

Tell school children to pledge to serve Obama.
Luke E. replied to Luke E.'s topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Your allegiance should be to whatever country you have decided to live in or were born into and decided to stay. Chances are, if your allegiance is elsewhere, you are up to no good. Freedom came and is still coming at a price so anyone that takes advantage of this countries freedoms and opportunities damn sure ought to love her. I think we're seeing the fruits of poor seeds being sown in our society today and they aren't tought how many lives have been given to make this country as great as she is and how to be respectful of that. This is all of course, my very own opinion and you know what they say about those huh. -
Tell school children to pledge to serve Obama.
Luke E. posted a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Just saw this and I think it is recent but not sure. Either way, it is disturbing that this ever made it in front of school children and even more disturbing that not only are they not going to discipline the person that made the decision, they're not even going to say who it was. Things are going south. http://www.westernjournalism.com/parents-livid-propaganda-video-encouraging-students-pledge-support-obama/ -
Yea I forget what it is on the outside of the shells but it is really interesting how much difference it makes in shelf life. Funny chicken egg story, back just before my wife and I got married I had gone to visit my grandparents and brought back 4 cartons of eggs. My future bride was at my place to cook stuff for a gathering we were going to later but I wasn't home yet. When I walked in the door she was getting ready to go somewhere and when I asked where she was going she replied, to go buy more eggs. I said what for, she said she kept cracking eggs and they were all bad so she tossed them. Now my wife grew up in Brentwood and had never cracked a non store bought egg so when the yolk was a darker yellow she thought they were bad. She was a bit embarrassed when I told her that's how they were supposed to be.

My Grandfather took to raising Quail about 5-6yrs ago and now has chickens, turkeys and guineas. Aside from start up costs and labor to build enclosures and what not, it has been a good deal. Now when I say he has all those different kinds, I don't mean just a few of each because last time I was down he had 50 or more turkeys 30-40 chickens and I don't know how many quail. They always have eggs and enough to supply everyone in the family near about and always have plenty of poultry in the freezer. Even with all that he has he only spends about a hour per day feeding, watering, moving pens and anything else needed and he moves pretty slow, I think I could knock it out in 20-30 minutes tops. Not to mention the stuff just taste 100x better when you raise or grow it yourself vs. buying in a grocery store. I've also gone down to their place in Florida and brought back several cartons of eggs and was still eating them 3 months later and were still good.. I mention that because if these eggs stay good for that long and even longer maybe, how long have those "fresh" store bought eggs been hanging around before you buy them? dlm37015 (David) told me one time that WalMart brought eggs in from China or somewhere overseas.

The estimated lower price was on the original thread (unless it has been taken down) and there was never a discussion about uppers as the company that was supposed to be manufacturing wasn't offering them to us as the kind folks at CMT are. I know the suspense is building but as the opening post states no one will no for sure until on or shortly after the 30th when each of us that have claimed receives a PM stating the final price. I myself am anxiously awaiting the PM.

I know I've heard Dolomite and seen some others here talk highly about the customer service and appreciation you receive when dealing with RCBS. I just called RCBS to order a few different decapping rod/pin/expander setups to be able to open up case mouths a bit more in order to not shave or swage my cast bullets when seating them the conversation went like this, Me: told him what I needed Him: okay those will be in the mail today, anything else I can help you with sir? Me: yes, I need to pay you for them. Him: no you don't and I'm going to send you a couple extra. Me: sir, you are sending me a product that I wanted so I need to pay you for them. Him: I'll take it you don't need anything else, thanks for buying our products, you should see your parts the first part of the week and I hope you have a good weekend, then hung up the phone. (Not hung up the phone in an annoyed way but rather hung up the phone before I tried paying again kind of way). In a day in age where more often than not, you are met with unhelpful, rude and/or incompetent people on the other end of the phone line it is quite refreshing to come across the extreme opposite. I have Lee and RCBS dies and always tried to buy Lee since they worked just as well for me a were a little cheaper. After today I will now try to buy RCBS products when I can because I know that if I ever have an issue or need help, there will be someone waiting to happily help me. Now I don't know that there is anything wrong with the customer service at Lee but I've never dealt with them.

I have run across this clip a handful of times over the last 3-4yrs and it irritates the daylights out of me every time because I look at how much the media has changed for the worse. You think they would dare to do an episode like this now days? Or even just replay this one in an evening time slot? Cool video

Good rifles for what they are but they are not what they built it up to be. In my opinion, you would be much better off going with a newer Savage model 10 or a Remington 700. If I was choosing between these two I would choose the Savage hands down, the Rem. 700 is a great rifle but you would have to buy one and throw a good chunk of money at it in order to have as good of a trigger and bedded rifle as you get with the Savage right out of the box IMO.

Ted Cruz just ran out the clock!!!
Luke E. replied to Luke E.'s topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I would LOVE to see it implemented and allow it to expose itself as the BS job killing, healthcare slaughtering monster it is... BUT How many families and businesses are we willing to allow be destroyed in order to say "I told you so, stupid democrats" ? This law, once implemented, will be next to impossible to come back from. It won't be so simple as to say "Ha told you it wouldn't work, now lets go back to the old way" All businesses will have dropped coverage or switched over to the new ways, everything in the medical profession will be damaged to the point that we will be stuck with bottom of the barrel physicians and will take YEARS to get potential med students to trust that we won't change direction on them after they have racked up huge student loans and make it impossible for them to pay back, Insurance companies will dry up quickly leaving no one to provide the insurance once the law is repealed... It has taken many lifetimes to get them all to where they're at now so what makes anyone think that we could regain control of the house and senate, overturn the law and then everything will just go back to the way it was before? I agree this is not the most ideal way of handling the issue but at this point it is the ONLY way to stop it. -
