  1. If 3% alcohol made the difference between it being "good" and "bad"... it wasn't good to start with!
  2. I don't drink to many bourbons and if they use any barley, it's off my list! So, you can imagine,, I never touch Scotch!   My drink is Rum!
  3.   Yeah, that was my point. Moonshine on average is selling for about half what store bought sells for. The prices on "Moonshiners" would be to high in the real world.   But, many times you can't go by price to state it's quality. If it wasn't for the tax, store bought would be about half the price it is. Most of the people I've known don't make it to make money. They want to be known for making high quality liquor. I believe the liquor that's bought at a store will continue to go down in quality because of the control and also the competitive market.
  4. "BTW, the TV show moonshines, they have some really crazy prices.  The big thing about moonshine it should be cheaper then government bonded whiskey."   Moonshine is normally priced per gallon.   Makers Mark runs about how much a 5th(750ml)? $23 to $25?   That would put Makers Mark around $120 a gallon?   One thing to think about, some, not all, moonshine is better than bonded. But, not many people would pay $120 a gallon for moonshine.
  5. Well.. boo hoo    You do know that "flavor" and "proof" are on a balance beam... right?   As proof increases, flavor drops. The problem is to balance the proof to maintain the flavor. But, I don't believe telling everyone that you lowering the proof to increase supply is a good idea!
  6. After looking at all the "nice weather" the people in the Northeast Corner is having... I'm going to stay right here!   I like the four-seasons we have in East Tennessee, the weather isn't to extreme one way or another.   It seems we are getting more tornadoes that we did 30 years ago. Dad told me years ago that a tornado was real rare in the mountains. Guess things change?   "Sunny, with a high near 60. Northeast wind 5 to 10 mph.".... I'll take it!!
  7. "It ain't illegal til you get caught!" - Tickle
  8. I'll just stay on this end of Tennessee.   I believe Memphis has a time bomb just up river that's ticking.... that "bomb" is called New Madrid fault.
  9. "Buffy"... she was put-out in front of our house about a month ago... "Miss Gray" was also discarded, she is 18 years old... "Tinker" is the oldest that was put-out and came to our door 20 years ago...
  10. ... and yet, another "World Power" pulls out of Kings Bay, Georgia.
  11. Your bag was the main problem. If you plan to winter camp outside a lot, this would would be a good start...   http://www.goldnuggetsurplus.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=gnasi&Screen=PROD&Category_Code=SB-sleeping-bags-sleeping-bags&Product_Code=SB004   You can find them at a lower price by searching, and they do come "used".   Sorry.. no short cuts to quality.
  12. For the most part, sounded like a great trip!   Can you tell us what area you were in?   Did you wear a toboggan cap during the night? You loose a lot of heat from your head. Did you have a pad under your sleeping bag? This will help break the cold from the bottom. You can also use your heavy coat under the bag. Never wear all the clothes you plan to wear the next day to bed. But keep part of them in your bag so you can put them on when you get up, that way you won't be as cold when you get out of the bag and have warmer cloths to put on.
  13. The locals around Chilhowee Mountain said it was a "problem bear" from the Smoky MT. Park that was relocated. Don't bet your life on a bear. Have a friend who was charged by one this year, he dropped it with his 44 mag.
  14.   "The rare attack by a black bear occurred Thursday during the family's outing to a waterfall in a remote part of the Cherokee National Forest. The bear killed a 6-year-old girl and seriously injured her mother and brother."   Wonder if that mother thinks that way?
  15. If you need to ask what equipment and clothes you will need... maybe a weekend camping/backpacking trip like this one wouldn't be a real good idea? But it is a damn good way to find out what works and what doesn't! The problem is not being properly prepared and this can get you in real trouble fast in cold weather. It's best to get your "feet wet" in warmer weather... and your first winter trip from a base camp.
  16. Ground is white in Bradley Co... Covered in 30 minutes between 11:00 and now(11:30).
  17. I wouldn't say anything or post signs just yet. They now know the land has a new owner, see what the near term brings.   If you do not live on the land, then you may have to post it?
  18. I guess most of my training was self-taught?   When I was a kid, I'd tell Dad I was going squirrel hunting... he'd say if I wasn't back in two or three days, they would take the dogs and come looking for me... they never had to. I learned navigation at an early age, later even had a job updating topo maps of Georgia for the USGS. Navigation is real important to know and many times overlooked, until the GPS stops working!   I've hunted and fished all my life, so finding something to eat has never been a problem. I learned early to build my own traps and snares. Also to never waste ammo and had to make every shot count and get the game... .22 long rifle was over a penny a piece back then! By the age of 13, no animal was out of reach of my long bow. I learned to stalk and have patience, And arrows cost a lot more than a .22 bullet!   I guess the best training and the use of tactics I've had started just before my 20th birthday back in '68. I received a letter that said... "Congratulations! You have just won an all expense paid trip to a foreign land... your job will be to kill... or be killed." And that's all I'm saying about that.   But the best training and use of tactics is what you put in your head and making accurate and precise decisions in a moment's notice!
  19. Don't forget to take the sausage, eggs, and coffee... oh, and biscuits... For dinner you could fix skillet cornbread and homemade soup... or maybe a pizza... maybe some sweet rolls for dessert... Well, if it's not your birthday... you can forget about the cake!
  20. "Not cool, Robert Frost!"   Ha! Love it!
  21. I can remember going "light"... but them days are over! I'm just to old to sleep in a bag on the ground under a light shelter. When the weather is like this, it's nice to have a base camp. I still camp year round in tents, even going on 65. But, you got to be prepared for any weather and conditions!   If you're going to be above 1,500', you're looking at temps below 20* Friday night... and below 32* Saturday night with snow/rain.   This maybe a trip you'll remember for a long time!
