  1. I played with it last night and pumped about 5L through it in just a couple minutes, it weighs 8 oz, I think its well worth the "weight penalty. It packs fairly compact. I think for the money it a great water filter.
  2. Dang I need to get hooked up with you, I'm Turkey hunting by myself this year and I've only been with someone who knows what they are doin 2 different times.
  3. Just bought the katadyn hiker I've heard so much good about them I figure so many people can't be wrong
  4. I was looking at the sawyer squeeze filter and you were talking about the bags wearing out, I think the platypus bags collapsible bottles have the same thread as the sawyer filter, if that's the case you can get a liter collapsible bottle for like 8 bucks and use it for your dirty water.
  5. My 2 light source comes from past caving trips, where 2 light sources are a minimum, I always had 3 battery powered light sources(headlamp, hand held, photon keychain led) plus a candle lantern. For the weight I'm (not)carrying I have some pretty powerful lights. And truthfully I probably wouldn't navigate much at night unless necessary, so the lights will be mainly for doing tasks or signaling. I had already thought about lithium batteries not so much for weight but I think they have a better shelf life as well.
  6. This morning I put my new stuff in my pack today and it has paid off, my pack now weighs 15.5 pounds. I'll just go over the things I changed. Added 2L platypus tuber bladder, 1L platypus collapsible bottle, 20 oz stainless cup, Princeton Tec Byte, 3 12hr lightsticks, Sea to Summit spork and knife combo. I also added 5 AAA batteries which is enough to replace the batteries in both my lights. I removed a stainless 1L bottle, and energizer headlamp, I also removed the pair of wool socks and replaced them with some athletic socks which is what I wear all the time.
  7. Heck ya! I guess tomorrow I need to update my pack contents list, I have picked up a couple goodies to swap out with stuff in my pack, I picked up a new, smaller, lighter headlamp made by Princeton Tec. I replaced my 1L stainless bottle with a 1L collapsible platypus bottle and a 20oz stainless cup(smaller and lighter).
  8. I will look into your suggestion, I have had a couple mre entrees, they are ok, but I wasn't aware of the shelf life.
  9. Good deal for you, I really like the maxpedition bags I've seen. I would have ordered one eventually if the pack I have now hadn't literally fallen into my lap. I bought a 20oz stainless cup today for my pack since I didn't have anything to boil water in. I'm planning on ordering some mre entrees and heaters this weekend I found a good website that allows you to order exactly what you want. The site is beprepared.com they don't have every entree and side but they have a good selection.
  10. Ya I think I like the pump better. But I'm gonna do some research.
  11. As for me the only time I'm not carrying on my person is at work. As for other people maybe they aren't comfortable carrying, holster or mentally. I would say that less than half of all hcp holders even carry 1 time a month, for a lot of people its more about the novelty of having one that the opportunity to excersize ones rights.
  12. My thinking also, while they are neat, I would almost rather drink "contaminated" water with nothing floating in it than vice versa. I checked out the squeeze filter and I like it, I think I'm gonna check into those more.
  13. I bought a bladder today, I decided on a platypus 2L the tuber not the big zip. I decided on it for 2 reasons. 1. No fancy quick disconnect to break or leak, the tuber hose threads on like a bottle cap and had a rubber gasket. 2. The hose will work on their smaller collapsible bottles so I bought a 1L so now I can have up to 3L. in my pack. I looked at a couple filters today haven't purchased one yet, I was thinking about the steripen but don't like having to rely on battery power to sterilize my water.
  14. If I can remember who makes it, there's a company that has a filter that replaces the bite valve, only downside is having the filter element hanging down, gotta do some research, but I have basically 100 bucks to spend.
  15. Ok so I'm looking to buy a bladder for my pack, so far I've looked at platypus, camelback and greigrig. I am also thinking about buying a filter either one thats inline of my bladder or should I buy a separate pump filter.
  16. If you were a little closer I would say let's get together, if your ever in the Knoxville area shoot me a message and possibly meet up
  17. I don't wanna get too much off subject, but I'm looking at getting a ham license this summer any tips or recommendations as to what license to get, I'm not sure I would use it alot with the exception of a shtf scenario.  My stepdad has had his for a while and is the one that is responsible for getting my to start thinking about it.
  18.   My goal for today is to trim a some weight from my pack, I think I can get it down to 15 lbs without sacrificing much if any.  I am on the lookout for a military issue poncho, one that doubles as a shelter.  I'm gonna lay out everything in groups (fire starting, knives, clothing shelter, etc.) so that I can eliminate excessive redundancy.
  19. I don't have any children but I have 9 nieces and nephews from my wifes family and I have tried my best to impart good firearm handling skills in all of them even my nephew thats only 4 years younger than me. I can say that its been successful I even got my 2 nieces to shoot ny air rifle, it was the first "gun" they had ever shot.
  20. Amen, there was always guns around my house as a kid and there was 5 of us kids and guess what, no negligent discharges or accidents, it's all about education. If you hide the guns from your kids, then the guns have a mystery attached to them, and the one time you don't put it up they will find them and in my opinion be more inclined to atleast find out more about it. My best friends son is 21 months old and when he walks into the room and sees my gun cabinet he points and says "pow pow", and he knows even at that age not to touch them.
  21. K so I "weighed" my self today with and without my pack, on my Wii fit. 17 pounds without any water or food. I plan on carrying 3 liters of water, so that's 6 pounds and then probably 3-4 pounds of food, if that's realistic then my pack would weigh 27lbs.
  22. Awesome, I think my next purchase is gonna be some kind of chest rig.
  23. The package was waiting on me last night. First impression is for the price its very well built and no issues with stiff zippers for me. The waist belt ain't much but I guess if you could find some pads to slip over then it might be ok. To echo most everyone else, I say its well worth the money unless it falls apart in a year.
  24. Tacoma for the win I have 280k on mine
  25. I had thought of that but I was wanting more detail like weight as I add stuff.
