  1. Yup. I dont care about any "less than lethal" argument. A fist is "less than lethal" and plenty of people have been beaten to death. Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.
  2. Vote George Jones!
  3. Hey, we're good on TGO! I believe you could call and ask without giving identifying information. And if she can qualify to buy one she can most likely qualify for a carry permit. And that would only cost her $10 to find out. Did anyone mention Eastside Gun Shop, conveniently located in E.Nashville?
  4. Mars, I thought about suggesting she go try to buy one. Then I had second thoughts because the 4473 specifically asks about this and I dont want to recommend to someone to lie on a Federal form. There might be a way to interpret the question so she isn't lying however. It depends on the meaning of "is" perhaps.
  5. Obama will be the Jimmy Carter of the 21st century, as I've mentioned before. An outsider, charming etc he has little contact in Washington and no one owes him anything. Therefore he will get nothing done. But what he can do unilaterally is scary. And the press will give him a pass because they dont want to be seen criticizing America's second Black president.
  6. From the state website. The answer is I don't know. It is possible/likely that the records were closed due to her being a juvenile. If she is prohibited she can always apply to have her rights restored. I would either call TBI and ask since they have the ultimate say or consult an attorney.
  7. Used Smith 3rd generation ex-LE gun in DAO. Reliable as hammers, stainless finish, easy to get mags, usually come with night sights.
  8. Take I40 East to Alexandria exit, half way between Lebanon and Carthage. Turn right towards Alexandria. Go about 5 miles. Road will go down hill and you will see sign for Brush Creek (unincorp). To left is big white sign for JMR Gunsmithing. Turn left at sign, go 1/10 mile to JMR. Through the gates and follow the road down to the range. Shoot starts at 1:00, meeting at 12:45. Get there a little early for safety/orientation. You spoke to Alyce, John's wife. Nicest bunch of people you would hope to meet and really good shooters. Tomorrow is the BUG match, so little guns are the rule. If you bring a big gun they'll still let you shoot.
  9. Five hundred yards is not eight hundred yards. I have a Savage 10LE bolt in .308 that will work great out to about that distance. Add a $200 scope and a bipod, some off the shelf quality ammo and a person would have a good challenging task for himself. But the farther one goes the more difficult (and expensive) it becomes, not linearly but geometrically. So a 1200 yard shot will require about double the equipment cost of an 800 yard shot. And for someone to shoot an 8" group at 800 yards means he is shooting about the theoretical limit of his rifle. That is to say, he would do no better if he had the gun in a vise and took out all human error. I don't know anyone that good.
  10. O.K. I'm just a crabby old fart (turning older on Sunday btw) so what do I know? Just do the math on a 1MOA rifle and see how that translates at 800 yards. Keep in mind that at that distance everything becomes a factor: temperature, humidity, wind, barrel, etc etc. If someone wants to shoot 800 meters and is willing to put the time and money into it, let him knock himself out. For entertainment, here's Chuck Hawks on hunting rifles. http://www.chuckhawks.com/practical_accuracy.htm And Towerclimber, if your wife can shoot her rifle better than the same gun cranked into a vise, I wanna see it.
  11. I chewed this one over with my resident gun guru. We agreed that 800 yards is a very long distance, beyond point blank range. He points out that the average decent off the shelf deer rifle will shoot consistently at 200 yards, for about $500. Increase that by 250% and you'll be increasing cost appropriately. Then there's a scope capable of seeing a man-siezed target at 800 yards. Further, given a rifle with inherent .5MOA capability you are talking about pretty large groups down range. And that's the rifle in a vice taking out all the human element. So be prepared to spend on the order of $3500 before chambering the first round.
  12. And I'll add, a little more Jose Average, a little more Jamal Average, a little more Jai Average. We live in a multicultural society. If anyone has a problem with that, either get over it or move to Hayden Lake. If we don't reach out to non-traditional gun owners, then we will become increasingly marginalized.
  13. Boy does this sound familiar. First off, do you have someplace where you can actually shoot "better than 500 yards"? In this area that is all but impossible. So it doesnt make sense to me to spend the money on something that you can't do. Second, the simple fact is that most people aren't that good, most people cannot outshoot their guns. Everyone is looking for that "one gun" that will turn them into Joe Sniper/Joe Pistolier/Joe Miculek. It doesn't work that way. An average shooter is pretty much going to be an average shooter with any gun he buys. A first rate shooter will be pretty much a first rate shooter no matter the gun. Third, conventional wisdom is to spend at least as much on the scope as the gun. Conventional wisdom is wrong. Yes, for someone who is an expert shooter hitting out to 700 meters under all conditions, including low light etc, it makes sense to get the best. For someone heading out to a range during sunny daylight hours the average $100 scope is perfectly acceptable. Finally, how much are you going to shoot this? I would opt for .308 in no small part because there are tons of factory loadings, including match grade ammo, readily available. If you are really going to make a project out of it, then whatever caliber strikes your fancy would work fine. But be prepared to spend lots of time with reloading.
  14. Anti 2A pols like, mmm, who exactly? Last I saw, a bunch got kicked out, including a sitting speaker of the house. As for the group still in, most of them are elected on many other issues than guns.
  15. My grandma always told me those gentiles were bad news. If the Dems end up in the smoke filled back room I could easily see Al Gore emerge as the nominee with Hillary as VP. In any case they seem to be flogging each other (Clinton and Obama) into an easy McCain victory. I never would have predicted that. I was sure the witch would take out Obama with no problem.
  16. Eastside. Just a fantastic guy who really knows everything. Oops, that's me isnt it. Guns N' Leather. Franklin for the selection and to chat with Rocky. Bottom of the barrel: Gun City.
  17. Generally we agree. But the anti side presents terrible arguments. Their basic argument is that guns are bad. More guns are more bad. Ergo less guns are less bad. And ideally no guns are no bad. So if we succeeded in getting rid of all guns there would be no gun crime at all. But in the absence of that, an incremental approach is all we can hope for. That's true, sort of. Just like if we got rid of all automobiles there would be no auto fatalities. But just like the cars, the argument is fallacious because...well you know why. It reminds me of the old days of SALT where nuclear bombs are bad, so fewer are good with ultimately no bombs being the best. It didnt work then. The logic is specious, to say the least. And it doesnt work for guns now. So point that out to people who have the unstated belief that fewer guns will mean less crime. You'd be amazed what you'll find. And yes, the very best way is to take someone shooting. I did that with our rabbi's 60 year old mother in law and she just loved it.
  18. The GOP might have a chance of winning this. The Dems seem to be locked in a deathstruggle between Hillary and Obama, with the nomination to be decided in a smoke-filled back room, just like the good ole days. I predict a resurgence of Gore-fever with Hilary as VP choice.
  19. That isnt the election, that's the primary, where the rules are set by parties themselves. And by your logic Al Gore should have been president in 2000 since he got more votes than Bush. I dont think you want to go there.
  20. Len, I have looked at the Brady websites and read their "facts". Yes, they have facts. Stalin had facts. Mao had facts. If something were a complete falsehood it would be obvious to everyone. But their "facts" are really disembodied entities with little connection to the real world or to policy. So the "fact" that X number of people are killed with handguns every year sounds dreadful. Until you realize that 10 times as many are killed with automobiles. Or until you realize that a very large number of those killed were killed as a result of drug wars between criminals. This is the issue, that they "spin" their facts in a dishonest way. We have this on our side sometimes as well, and I have gotten lots of grief for calling people on it. I saw posted here some "facts" about the likelihood of encountering a convicted felon, with the assumption that this would be a life threatening encounter. It makes for good business but lousy logic. But overall the pro-gun folks have far less "spin" associated with their views and are far more committed to fairness and honesty than anything the anti side produces. So comparing the two is a real disservice. And btw, an Oxford-educated Orthodox Jewish gun dealer is a real stereotype breaker.
  21. No, its just you. Look at polling on the 2A and you'll see by and large the public is supportive of our positions. There are no shortage of antis, of course. But the number of rabid anti-gunners out there is minimal. What do we have to worry about is the lack of interest in shooting. One of the biggest things keeping my customers back from buying guns (except for the wife at home) is the lack of any place to shoot. This gets worse every year.
  22. I didn't. If I did, I would have voted for Obama, not because I think he's a prize ("that Obama's a piece of sh*t and I told him to suck on my machine gun") but because he will be a weaker candidate than Hillary. But in the end I just couldn't muster enough enthusiasm to pull the lever for him.
  23. Hmm, umm......
  24. Even that would make sense. But "I'm gonna ask my pal Bubba who has something tangentially related to this issue what he thinks" is no way to study an issue, examine the pros and cons, and reach a conclusion about what would be best for the state. No wonder our laws suck.
  25. I've actually done it. Not comfortable but fun. Whether to or not depends. If you're a middle aged Orthodox Jewish man with a young son you might get stopped and asked about it. If you're a 20-something Black kid with a Thug Life t-shirt and do-rag then you should expect to get thrown to the ground with a gun to your ear.
