I always like to meet at The Outpost, if I'm buying from north of me. If it's local; a Wal-Mart parking lot, away from the store always seems to be convenient. -
Oooh, that's not a good idea. If you put it in my hands, you'll probably have to gnaw my arm off to get it back! Sent from a mountain somewhere, using telepathy.

Just out of interest, if you're ever near Tullahoma, you're welcome to take mine for a test run!

Oh absolutely. Purely the length. Comparing the same load in a 24" barrel compared to the 20" I've noticed an average difference of 120fps, so 30fps per inch. Not an earth shattering difference in .308, but I do know that in my 20" 6.5x55 I lose nearer 50fps per inch (comparing it to my 32" target barrel) With lower bullet weights (even though the BC is significantly better) speed will really start to drop off quickly beyond a couple of hundred yards. I'd have to guess that a Creed would get mid-low 2600s with 140gn bullets from the LWH, at the muzzle (again, comparing it to my Swede which is a little hotter) Sent from a mountain somewhere, using telepathy.

Oooh, I love Remmy 600s! Any chance of a piccy or two? Sent from a mountain somewhere, using telepathy.

I think it'd definitely be more pleasant to shoot, but a lighter caliber wouldn't really overcome it's other shortfalls (loss of velocity, barrel heating quickly etc...) It also wouldn't have been suitable for my needs. As unpleasant as it'd be, if I could've bought one in .30wsm or .30saum I would have. I'm literally only using it for elk, mule deer & (fingers crossed...) sheep. I've given serious though to having it re-chambered. Another thing I should mention, regarding all ultralight rifles really; you've really got to practice with them from field positions. Holding an 8lb rifle on target, offhand, is pretty easy. Holding a sub 6lb gun not so much. It doesn't really 'hang' on the target like a longer, heavier gun does.

I don't have the 16 lwh, but I do have the 11 lwh. Mine's in .308 & it's a great rifle, but it is really, REALLY picky on ammo. It's also not a range gun. 2 shots in rapid succession & it'll throw the 3rd out of the group, 100% of the time. As purely a hunting rifle, it's fantastic. I bought mine specifically for hunts out west where weight saving is a huge premium. Be aware, it is VERY lightweight. Mine comes in just a hair under 6lb loaded with the scope (Vortex 2-7x35) & the recoil is commensurate. My .308 kicks like a .300 win mag. The average speed rifle weighs around 8-9lb. This feels like nothing! I reload for it & it took a lot of work to find an accurate load. Federal Gold Medal Match was ok, but no better than 1½" at 100. The short, ultra slender barrel is kinda 'whippy' Also, be aware that you'll lose a fair amount of velocity over published data due to the lack of length. This is a lot more significant in smaller bore loads than larger (.243 will be much more noticeable) Honestly, unless you have a very specific need for an ultralight gun, 99% of folk would be happier/better served with a Weather Warrior. Not bashing the gun one iota, it's an awesome rifle, but I haven't touched it this deer season. I couldn't imagine elk or sheep hunting with anything else though.

I'm fuming.... Today is my first afternoon off work in nearly 3 freaking weeks (I've got 2 out of 4 stash of sick) & it turns out that there's a family spending Christmas & New Year in the holiday cottage on my lease, meaning no freaking hunting for me I really need to put a couple more in the freezer & I'm rapidly running out of time now.

Post the last firearm related thing you bought!

2, 7 round 1911 mags, an 18lb recoil spring & 19lb main spring. And some grips. And a holster. 500 bullets & 2000 pieces of brass. THIS is why I said I wouldn't buy one. -
I've killed 2 coyotes from stands, but only because they happened by. If I'm actually Coyote Hunting, I like to stay mobile. I'm never in one spot for more than a half hour.

Go to Texas & hunt Aoudad & Javelina, then Florida for redfish, speck & hogs! Something's always in season somewhere!

Thanks guys! The dinner menu does look spectacular! I think we'll be giving it a shot.

I'm looking for recommendations. Anywhere between Nashville & Chattanooga, basically anywhere within a couple of hours of Tullahoma. I'm looking for an upscale place, no lunch buffet joints. The Wife, being vegetarian, loves & really misses Indian food & it being her birthday this week, I figured I'd take her out for some fancy nosebag. Does anyone know of any really, really, money-no-object, great restaurants?

Walked up on this one during a Hog hunt in Altamaha, south Georgia. Makes for an interesting day!

Fixed that for you

I'd rather have 4, 50 pounders than 1, 200 anyway! It never ceases to amaze me how many people have bad misconceptions about hogs. How aggressive they all are, how incredibly hard to kill they all are, how they all weigh 300#....... Slap a hole in one's head, heart lungs or neck & they go down as easily as anything else.
-
Not at all. I think the .22 is probably a better pig gun in 90% of situations. Bear in mind that both are limited to head shots. Actually, thinking on it, I think you could get away with a neck shot with the WSM, but the heavier 40gn of the .22 is going to give much better penetration on a frontal shot. There are pros & cons either way. Even ammo is around the same price. 22mag seems really hard to find though!

I'm really tempted by the Ruger, but I've never had any luck with them. I've yet to own one that I can get to group even close to my Savages. Sent from a mountain somewhere, using telepathy.

Honestly, I've had a Hog Hunter & the stock is really a cosmetic issue. Mine shot a 3" 700yd group, pretty well out of the box & stocking a center fire doesn't bother me. Having to re stock a rimfire because the original is actually causing serious accuracy issues kinda pisses me off. Sent from a mountain somewhere, using telepathy.

Welp..... if'n I ever find one private (for retail or under. Can you believe some tool on GOC is asking $550 for a used B-mag?) I'll let you know how it does! I'm kinda reluctant to drop the coin on a factory Savage, because after a bunch of research I know I'll have to drop at least another hundy into it in the form of a stock & bedding. I've zapped 2 coyotes with my marlin 17 using CCI Vmax 17gn. One was a drt headshot at 55yds the other was a shoulder shot at maybe 90. That one ran, but only went a few yards. I've also taken a small hog, I'd guess maybe 40lb, using Winchester Super X 20gn XTP. Again, that was a rear brain shot & only around 30yds. Overall I've been very happy with both the rifle & ammunition. Sniping crows at a couple hundred yards is a hoot! However, I'd really like to upgrade to a 17WSM. I'll be honest, the hog was kinda irresponsible although it dropped on the spot. I'd be more than happy using the WSM in that application though & I do get a lot of opportunities at pigs where only rimfire are allowed.

Hey, if you ever decide to sell that shotgun, gimme a holler. Been looking for one for a while.

I'll be out from 6am Friday until 4pm Sunday. Unfortunately I'll be out of unit L, so chances of filling the freezer are slight. Stupid 1 doe limit...
