How many of you have ACTUALLY been hog hunting?

If you come back with both feet, you're not trying hard enough..... Even the dogs climb trees to dry out. -
I know of a really nice one for sale.......

I'm thinking we need to organise a group trip to Altamaha, south Georgia.......plenty of pigs, never more than a 20yd shot, thick timber & palmettoes, swampy, snakes & skeeters galore & 100% humidity. You'll literally love it or die -

Yep. As long as it's your property. -
All you folks that refuse to do business with anyone who's money goes to support Democrats: Where the hell do you buy anything?

Talladega National Forest next weekend! I just found out from a friend, we'll be doing a quick backcountry camping/hog trip. I was hoping to have my .300blk upper by then, but I guess I'll be taking my .223 this time around. -
They always seem to be in the way when you don't need them. Flapping in your face whenever you bend over etc. Tuck it under your shirt & it's a nuisance to get at. Of all the ways a fella could conceivably carry a knife, it always seems to be the least convenient to me.

I'm asking, because everyone seems to have a lot of misconceptions regarding how big or how vicious every wild hog in the world really is. That idea keeps being reinforced over & over in every new thread inquiring about pigs. Not just here, but on every single hunting forum where the subject is raised. I hog hunt HARD. I'd miss the whole of deer season for 3 good long weeks chasing pork. 99% of my friends are hardcore pig hunters. Most of them traditional archery dudes too! In 15 years of chasing actual wild pigs on 3 continents I've never seen, experienced or heard first hand any of the usual opinions regarding their savagery! I know of one dude in Texas that got chewed on by an angry Javelina, but I've yet to meet a single person with a pig scar..... -
Like, for realsies.....

Revolver/Caliber for Hog Protection while Dove Hunting
Handsome Rob replied to A516's topic in Hunting and Fishing
Never really got the point of carrying a handgun, while you're also carrying a much more powerful weapon in your hands. A load of birdshot at 8' is going to do a whole lot more to dissuade an angry porker than a single bullet of any caliber from a handgun. Also, stop watching YouTube videos on 'Wild Hogs Attack!!!!!!' I regularly & purposely put myself in harm's way, pig wise, and I've yet to be 'attacked' If you're in a dove field, surrounded by other dudes; A.) Ain't a pig coming near you & B.) You're more likely to shoot some other poor bastard because you're panicking about pigs. They're not all 300lb, tusk bristling, angry psychopaths. They're mostly 40-90lb terrified speed balls who just wanna get out of the way. -
I usually grab a couple of pounds of fresh Datils whenever I have my spring fishing trips around Jacksonville & St Augustine too. I've always just frozen them, but I'm going to try dehydrating & grinding this year.

Other than Tabasco, I prefer powders. I have a friend up in Ohio that grows dries, grinds & blends his own........

10 minutes ago I would've said 'nothing' but I just went to my ammo cupboard to load the truck for a range trip & now I'm sat here, literally dumbfounded by the amount of .22lr ammo I seem to have amassed. I guess I'm a collector of that now. Funny thing is, I don't remember having actually bought any for years, it's all come with guns I've bought or traded for.

Kriss Vector Gen 2 pistol build work in progress...

Do I have a bit of a stiffy? Yes. Am I apologising for it? In no way whatsoever. -
If the muzzle's going up that far, you might wanna hang on tighter! My hunting load in my old 1895 GG was a 405gn bullet over 56gn of h4895 giving 1930fps & I considered it very pleasant! More of a slow push.

Just came along to say........ 'All taxation is theft'

I mean, your only other real recourse would be specialty, ultralight 'shirt button' bullets. I have no experience with them, but a couple of the older guys on the Marlin Owner's forum seem to like them. I don't even know where you'd order them from, all I know is that they're available. Give it a googling, see what you think.

Not to sound inflammatory, but honestly, if you're that sensitive to the recoil, maybe a .45-70 isn't for you. Sorry man.
-
Also, look in the Lyman book for 'Trapdoor' loads. They're vastly reduced over the 1895 loadings & totally safe.
-
Try 10-12 gn of Unique under that 300gn bullet. You'll need a little puff of dacron to hold it in place, but it'll feel like a .45 colt. 12gn of Trailboss under the same bullet (no filler needed) will feel like a .45 Schofield!
-
I do. I actually load a very light, subsonic load for my long range gun & my trapdoor. It does shoot a very heavy bullet, 510gn, but I'm only sending it around 1100fps Let me dig out my notes & I'll get back to you.....

Real simple, welted slip sheath (I did wet firm this'n, being so small) with a 1½" clip The clip isn't perfect for inside-the-pocket carry, but it'll do. Plus I can OWB it or attach it to a pack belt.

Being that other than my Benchmade mini-grip, every knife I've used in the last 20 years I've made myself I find it difficult to actually pay cash-money for a new fixed blade. But this wee bastard had me intrigued. Actual G10 scales, decent (7Cr17mov) steel, handy-dandy size & $20? Yeah, I'll give 'er a punt..... https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0773CN9LR?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_pd_title I have to say, I am BEYOND impressed! The primary & secondary bevel are clean, crisp & precise. Plunge is perfect, scale fit & finish is flawless & the edge has actually been properly honed. Usually there's a wire edge to one side of the secondary, but this thing is mirror smooth & literally shaving sharp, right out of the package. I need to whip up a pocket sheath (I cannot abide a 'neck' knife) but initial impressions are right up there......

I think it's been altered from factory specifications, invalidating any warranty (specific or implied) I'm not positive, but I'm reeeasonably sure.....
