  1. Made before '83 as no cross-bolt safety, my favorites. I have an '87 and a '99 P model. GLWS RP
  2. Probably my most favorite caliber to deer hunt with. Looks like an older model, what year of manufacture? That letter that starts the sn. will tell ya. I have two Marlins and a Savage pump, that have grounded a lot of deer. GLWS RP
  3. I too have multiple rifles in 35 and 444, but no 45-70, and there is a 38-55. RP
  4. The 45 colt will work just fine up to near a 100 yds., more if you practice and know your weapon. The 30-30 will have more ammo available at more places than 45 colt, but I'm sure you know that seeing that you own the Vaquero. As to the 45 colt round, it was a pistol cartridge mainly until recent years. From reading in the early years the brass wasn't strong enough for the extractors in rifles. I have 2 rifles in 45 colt and 5 in 30-30 so I like both. RP
  5. Nice, but most consider the 375 to be a mid bore, like the 38-55 and 35 Rem. There is another big bore, but unless you just want an expensive club I'd avoid it. The 450. I don't even remember the last time a factory round was produced for it was. Brass when you find it, is like $4 a pop, and the factory stuff that is floating around is going for about double that. I'm a leveraholic also. Marlins. Winchester, Rossi and a couple Henry rifles. Good luck in your search. RP
  6. Thanks, that's all these two have seen in a Long time. RP
  7. I thought I was getting this in one post but it didn't work. Any way, a couple days later on a different part of the farm, a very large hay field. Sitting up on the high end watching to the north I watched 8 does cross about 2/3 of way down, 225ish yds. according to the rangefinder. Then after they had crossed another comes out but much closer, 170, 175 yds. A minute later this nice 6 walks out, stops and begins eating leaves off of a low hanging limb. Giving me a frontal view with a slight quarter. I slide the Savage Axis in 6.5 Creed up and rest is across the handlebars of the 4-wheeler and send a 143gr ELD-x over a Heavy dose of 4350. Right in the left front shoulder and he dropped on the spot and never moved again. Then a few days later I drop thi nice doe with a Savage 99 that I've been cleaning up for a friend. About 120 yds with 150 gr hot cor over a mild load of W748. So I guess I've had a good season so far. RP
  8. Nice deer there forvthevson Greg, Congrats to him. I started off the season Halloween afternoon, yes I'm in a cwd county. I've had this fela on camera for two yrs now. First time I ran across him in person and wanted him out of the local gene pool. He came out about 80 or so yds from me on the right and walked across a small field. Went in behind a small grop of trees and paused, then came out and was wasn't wasting anytime doing so. The ole JC Higgins in 35R scored again, a 200 gr cast over some 3031 connected. Double lunged and he wtill ran 100 plus yds. Called him the devil deer with his 10" spikes. RP
  9. Sorry I had to size it down for this damn forum it screwed it up. Let me try again. RP
  10. Game camera pic., do you see the cougar stalking the elk? My apologies, posted from phone and didn't realize it came out so small. Scroll down there is a larger version. RP
  11. Didn't know about the regulations, just personally thought it a bit smallish, but like you said I'm sure it's been done... more than once. Just like the 22 lr & 22 mag. Let me see if I can get this Pic. to load. My .32 cal. Squirrel rifle and my .36 cal. 1851. RP
  12. I have a CVA Squirrel .32, it's pretty accurate and like you haven't shot it in a couple years. Very fun, but as you say a pain especially compared to the .50 and .54. Never thought about deer hunting with it though. RP
  13. I'm with ya on the Polaris, had one, and Never again. Honda's are hard to beat. RP
  14. Saw all that this morning and the reason for the question. Was looking for some who may have visited, or live near by. Looking for a centralized local for a long weekend gathering of shooters from around the eastern states for some shooting eating and bs'ing. RP
  15. Back atcha you ole coot... yourself. Been doing pretty over here, Big Al left us over there. How have you been? Possum trot is north west of Knoxville. Scott County. RP
  16. Looking for info on the place. From anyone who lives near or has ever visited the place. I'm working on a gathering for next Spring, for some friends from around the country. It says they have a couple ranges, 25, 50 ,and a 200 yarder. Anyone been there or live near, what are your thoughts on the place? Or do you know of somewhere similar that may be a better place. Thanks. RP
  17. I have 5 now, 3 Marlins and 2 Winchesters. RP
  18. Ok, "one" of my favorites a 1975 made 336 Marlin 35 Rem. Shortened to 16.5". RP
  19. I've seen 3 or 4 of them around here, $249- $259, and all with the black grips. I like those wooden ones there downtown. RP
