Montgomery County, Active Duty HCP requirements
c.a.willard replied to espacef1fan's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
your VMET is the DD 2586 verification of military experience and training. The online VMET is only helpfull for the HCP if you have taken formal training through the army that would show up on your ATRRS transcripts. For the majority of people the handgun training received in the military will not show on the VMET, making the qualification card still probably the easiest to use. -
556 wouldnt be my prefered deer round but i think it fits all your other needs better than the ruger. The round is also capable of taking deer size game so it is not truely a detractor. I think the reality in SHTF is that small game would likely be much more of a food source than a large game animal. If i was limited to one rifle in tennessee I'd want a round that i could shoot squirrel, rabbit, coons, and anything up to a deer without destroying to much of the meat. As far as the gas system getting fouled up i wouldnt really worry about that to much worse case is you dont have the ability to clean it, so you remove the gas tube and effectively have a bolt action but for it to get that gummed up takes a lot more rounds than most people think.

Disclaimer: For any who do not know already the Duffel Blog is a satire new site. This is not real http://www.duffelblog.com/2013/01/military-drawing-up-plans-for-nation-wide-gun-confiscations/ I check the duffelblog fairly regularly, I think its always good for a few chuckles. Mainly from stuf like the excerpt below. With all the serious things happening in our world sometimes its nice to sit back and laugh a little. "While there was initially some concern about the constitutionality of using the military on American soil, page 2131 of the ObamaCare Act actually amends the Posse Comitatus law to allow the military to disarm private citizens at the direction of the Secretary of Homeland Security. Objections by then-CIA Director David Petraeus were quietly silenced in November."

Havent done it myself yet. Havent really had a need for permanently fixed FH. Had a budy that used it for a rifle that he was waiting on a stamp for. I think he did have a little discoloration but not much. Ive silver soldered some other stuff just not gun parts. Started looking into it more when i ordered a PS90 because i think im gonna pull the barrel extension and permanently attach a fake suppressor to meet the required length thats if the thing ever gets here. Been waiting since early december so i've had alot of time to go through videos and tutorials .

I think its an interesting idea but the logistics of it would be extreamly difficult. For a study off effectiveness of a permit against that type of thing i could maybe see it. But to do it for training value i think would be a waste. There are lots of life like scenarious that are statisticly more likey to happen to you than an active shooter. training time would be better spent focusing on those. Also for a crowded theatre in TN the odds of only 1 person aving a gun are slim. Permit holders make up about 6 percent of the 21 and up population in TN. If you want realism then the numer of people armed should be accurate to what the real worl would be. If you did it you could probably do best cae and worst case. one run at 6 percent one run at 1 person.

The Sequester has hit close to home.
c.a.willard replied to Randall53's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
My big thing is dont penalize units for saving money. Requiring you to spend your entire budget or risk loosing a significant chunk of it the next year leads to incredibly wastefull purchases. Also make it easier for units to turn in live ammo so you dont have the obligatory were all done qualifying lets burn this ammo because brass is easier to turn in. The military is awash with wastefull practices. heck my reserve unit is about to do a 3 day drill for one day of weapons quals and bussing 100 people from michigan down for it. If units all over the map were a little more carefull with their spending there would be no need to cut programs like this. -

Dolomite, i ment more for the OP's son as he is National Guard and may have the time available to do enough credits to maintain eligibility. I agree that for those on AD in any branch that there isnt enough free time available to maintain the hours requirement for MGIB use. Most any of us here that have served can point to any number of programs that could be cut with neglible if any effects on force readiness. Cutting TA is definately not one of those items, it has real tangible benifits to the militaryfor minimal cost. -
I have a Cav Arms lower and i like it a good bit. And not to crap on the thread but didnt the owner at the time plead guilty.

from my understanding the education assistance program was cut, however with a 6 year obligation your son should qualify for the MGIB SR Chpt 1606. The MGIB pogram is funded by the VA and as of yet has not been messed with. His unit should be able to assist him in the process for the MGIB if they cant or wont PM me and ill get you the contact info for the FT Campbell Ed center. They have a staff specifically for this type of thing nd may be able to help. -

Unfortunately rank plays way to large a role in the awards process. Had an E-4 chaplains assistant created the same powerpoint they at best would have received an acchievement medal or nothing atall. -

I've always thought that it should be madatory for all representatives to be there. It's there job if you and i decided not to show up at work to go to a fundraiser what would happen. -
For those not in the loop one of the methods the DOD has chosen to cut spending to bring them in line with sequestration is to cut all tuition assistance to all branches of the military. Yes i know tuition assistance is a privledge and not a contractual obligation of the military so the DOD has every right to cut this from thier budget. However TA serves to improve the military and better prepare them to tansition to civilian life. The main reason it is benificial for those whio may not have an understanding of the sytem is that all though service members can draw their GI bill while serving it is extreamly wastefull to do so. The GI bill limits payouts by the number of months that you can draw it making it truely most benificial if you are a full time student. TA allows service members to slowly work towards their degree taking only a few classes at a time. http://wh.gov/7ZGk I know the likelyhood of this petition doing anygood at all is slim to none however i believe that this is worth at least trying for. There are plenty of wastefull spending programs in the DOD that could be done away with TA is not one of those. Service members must pass the course with the equivilant of a 2.0 or pay the funds back. Soldiers who drop out of the course for military related reasons are not subject to this payback. It really is one of the few things probably administered correctly and with minimal waste. College education is also an integral part of the enlisted promotion system

All jokes about the Marines aside one thing you can say for sure is they are indoctrinated
-
Served witha lot of Marines during my 10 years in the Army. Have several good friends in the Corp. None of them would refer to themselves as Soldiers heck its hard enough getting the guys that branche transfered from the Marines to the Army to not go around saying im a Marine all the time.

I do agree that after the fact it should be subject to third party review. And at minimum all documents should be available to congress that is a crucial part of checks and balances and serves to prevent abuse of power. the LOAC do a fairly good job at determining what would be a legal threat/vs non threat non combatant. and like i said in my previous post i think in regards to the 16 year old the iformation that lead to him being killed should be released. If it is true that he was accidentally killed in a attack targeting someone else there is no great reason to not release it. Of course any information release many here would say is fabricated anyways.
-
6.8 I agree Holder culd have prevented alot of this by being less ague in his initial memo, i think the second memo calriffied things well enough for the majority of people. I can also agree that there should be more transparency in these types of operations. In the case of Aulaqi i would even go so far as to agree that the U.S. had plenty of time to atleast prefer charges against him. However he was a terrorist conducting unlawfull combat against the US he was self admitedly a member of AQAP khan was as well. The only potential tragedy here was the death of Aulaqis son. The documents relating to that strike should definately be released and it would not hurt to release matters of evidence relating to the other two as well. I also agree that there is great potential for misuse of this type of attack, thats why i believe there should be more transparency from the govtwhen it comes to attacks of this nature, however that does not make them illegal.
-
and khan was killed in the awlwaki strike. The difference i guess is what we view as engaged in combat. For me if you are giving material support of unlawfull combatants you yourself are an unlawfull combatant. A combatant need not be armed and in the process of fighting to be attacked. All it takes for him to be considered an unlawfull combatant was his membership in alqaeda. The laws of war do not require him to be anything else. His membership in AQAP was self admitted Again im not trying to avoid the 16 year olds death i am just not sure i believe the story about his death and his death may very well have been illegal both under US law and the LOAC. It really all boils down to there are limited cirumstances where it would be legal to authorize the taking of an American life with a drone strike. I see this just continuing to go around in circles so we may just have to agree to disagree, but regardless the discussion of it is important. And a healthy distrust of government is necessary to remain a free people.
-
I didnt gloss over i left him out because i already stated i dont really believe the story behind his death. Nor do i emphatically trust our government. In fact i have a health distrust of the majority of government ofiicials. when you are recruiting and financing alqaeda operations that is operational and being engaged in combat. You do not have to be the one conducting the operation planning and assisting in it is enough. Better yet Jay what would have been your solution
-
Anwar Al Aulaqi: actively engaged in the recruiting of terrorists to attack US interersts at home and abroad and was a known alqaeda leader Abdulrahman Anwar al-Aulaqi was colateral damage of a strike targeting Ibrahim al-Banna whom the US governemnt did not know was there (not sure if i believe this one) Samir Khan was killed in the same strike that killed anwar and was also involved in the recruiting and taining of alqaeda operatives. So yes two of the 3 were engaged in combat with the US the third was collateral damage of a legitimate target.
-
If they are engaged in active combat against the US they are a threat how hard is thatt to understand. Yes obviuosly it would be illegal to kill a person not posing a threat, but thats not what was being discussed. Incase your unsure you can look up the second memo confirming that the person would have to be engaged in combat against the US in order for it to be legal. Someone actively engaged in combat against the US presents a public danger that if large enough could warrant military action. It is no different than the shoot down order on 911, there were US citizens on those planes and had a fighter had a chance at taking one out it would be legal to do so. Obviously it would be illegal to target innocent personnel no one ever said that it would be legal to do so. Simply that under the right set of circumstances the president could authorize military action against a US citizen.
-
for air rights see United States v. Causby Also on the topic of drone strikes the justice department has released a second memo in response to a follow up question from paul. In the secod memo the question asked was if it the president could use a drone strike on a US citizen not engaged in combat against the united states. The answer was a simple no.

Dawson Glock Small Frame Ice Magwell, ESP Legal?
c.a.willard replied to The Legion's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
Someone more educated than me on the subject should be along relatively soon but from what ive read it would depend on what the plug portion is made out of. I know the magwell itself is aluminum but from my reasearch apparently the plug that secures it is brass and therefore a no go. I dont know if they are still brass or if an aluminum or steel plug is available. It will definately fit in the box and not exceed the maximum allowable weight. Id say unless you are a high level competitor just ask the club you shoot at and go off of there guidance. -
