Find the closest club and try it out. It's loads of fun. All you need is a decent holster, hearing and eye protection, mag holder and ammo. Most of the clubs will let you shoot one match or two without joining the IDPA.

It's much more fun than square range static target practice.

The IDPA website will show you all the clubs in TN. There are several matches within 1 1/2 hours of Nashville. Music City, Gallatin, and Bowling Green, KY put on good well attended matches that would be happy to have you come out and give it a try. Brush Creek and Manchester also put on matches, they tend to have smaller turnouts but are just as welcoming. I shoot with them as well just not as often.

Gun, 3 mags, strong side holster, double mag pouch, an open mind, and the ability to follow safety instructions are all you need. If you are short on gear and are shooting a common gun speak up and we can arrange for someone to loan you what you need to try a match.

It is great fun, as competitive as you want it to be, and a great skill builder. It is not training, there are plenty of places in TN to get that.

This is my 2nd post on this hopefully this one stays

Thanks for the info. It looks like a bunch of fun and great training. I started to think on the range today how much better it would be than just standing still shooting. Going to have to find a free weekend and do it. And well have to wait till I can find ammo anywhere. Thanks again, Wrangler

It will teach you to shoot on the move, reload, vary your shot cadence as distance/difficulty varies, draw in a hurry without fumbling, and other very applicable skills helpful in using a pistol in defense.

But it is shot for score, and your enemy is the clock.

Learning to competently shoot an IDPA course will allow you to stand out at CIS, Tactical Response, Front Sight, LFI, or any other training school you attend. But do not mistake it for actual training in and of its self.
