It all depends on the holster. In general kydex holds pretty good because it grips onto the trigger guard. Leather you can get with a retention strap that works pretty good. You can get one with tension screws that you can adjust to where you want it. Some brands are pretty tight out of the box and stretch out a little with use, other are a little loose out of the box. It all depends on the brand and style, but if you look hard you can find something that will work in either leather or kydex.

I prefer leather holsters, but for running around the woods kydex might be a little more weather resistant.

I definetely do NOT want a retention strap. I hate those.

That's what I thought about kydex being more weather-resistant, but leather just seems like the natural choice when going out in the woods and hunting type of thing. I would get leather if they are close to being equal.

I was thinking a Galco or similar relatively high-quality, yet mass-produced leather side holster. I would rather have it fit close to the body and not stick out very far.

Take a look at the Bianchi CarryLok. It's a leather belt side that rides close and it has retention that isn't a strap.

I have one for my Glock and I like it. That might foot the bill.

What I use. Great holsters and the "evader" line is dishwasher safe:D ,

I own multiple carry lock holsters. If I am going to carry the gun on my hip it's going to be in a "carry lock" type holster. I do too much attic and crawl space work and don't want to chase my gun down (with a cell phone all you gotta do is call it, but your gun won't ring)

I have both Uncle Mikes Kydex and Blackhawk serpas. I use the Blackhawk when I am out in the bush as I like the finger lock system on it. Very positive and the pistol does not come out of the holster until my index finger depresses the lock. It is also very intuitive to use.

I used it to shoot limited with once just to see how well it worked.

Would a kydex have better retention than a leather holster?

This is a OWB/Open carry situation. Carrying around in the woods type thing.

Most any leather holster that is actually fitted and boned for your exact gun will have more than adequate retention for normal activities. If you need to ensure that it stays in holster if you're actually upside down, you probably need one with adjustable tension, just to make sure.

Holsters that fit "several" guns, all bets are off.

A "fit all", fits nothing.

I have a CarryLok, holds the handgun securely.
