.30 Remington, 6.8 & .30 Rem AR

Recommended Posts

So, I'm sitting here reading about this and that. Particularly the 6.8 SPC. The 6.8's parent cartridge is a dinosaur called the .30 remington. I've heard of it but have no first hand XP with it. BTW, it's also the parent case to the 10mm Auto. Cool.

Well, even though I have no XP with the 6.8 I know it's a pretty good cartridge. Remington is trying to get their .30 AR off the ground too, that looks pretty cool. The .30 Remington though, replicated the 30/30 in every way only rimless. It's only about a 1/4" longer than a .223. With modern powders and bullets that could EASILY be shortened and still get better ballistics than they did with it 50 years ago.

Wonder why they didn't try to develop something they had near a century of experience with instead of the .30 remington AR which is based on a .284 winchester case. That fatter case costs capacity and if people will ever wake up and smell coffee, unless you're at looong distances, you don't need anything better than 30/30 ballistics for killing long pigs. Anyone ever shot a .30 Remington? That model 8 it was chambered in is a super cool looking rifle. They don't make them like that anymore.

I have no experience with the old .30 Rem either (or the .30 Rem AR). I do have plenty of experience with the .30 WCF. Including shooting cast, gas-check boolits through <GASP> Marlin's Micro-Groove rifling. Just threw that tidbit in for you, Caster.

I think the .30 RAR is geared toward hunters, so magazine capacity is not an issue. At least to most hunters.

Hunters in the western U.S. do need more distance, which the RAR provides, I think.

Personally, I have become less and less interested in .30 cal rounds. I've become a fan of the 6.5 (.264) in the past few years. Especially the 6.5 Grendel. The Grendel catches the .30-30 at a bit past 100 yards energy-wise. With less recoil and noise, shorter barrel and larger mag capacity, I might add.

I do still like the .30 cal for closer ranges. I'm planning to piece together a 7.62x40 WT in an AR pistol right now. But only for shorter distances. If I feel the need to go past 200 yards, I'll still go to the Grendel.
