We are having a primitive survival camp/class/get together at my place this month. I'll be starting up the campfire around 6:00 pm Fri. June 29th, and we will be camping that night, and having class the next day. I know Timestepper is gonna bring some hawks and knives to show how to throw, and WD-40 is gonna teach hide-tanning, and both will be teaching a lot of cool frontier living style stuff. So anyways, Heres the important stuff.

What: Primitive living class

When: 6:00 pm June 29th - Late afternoon/early evening June 30th

Where: My place, 225 George Jones Rd Oliver Springs, TN 37840

Rules

#1 Take out anything you bring in. I'll have trash bags onsite, but please don't trash the field

#2 No shooting after 10:00 pm or before 8:00 am. I do have neighbors a lil ways away, and don't want to be a nuisance.

#3 Close any gate you have to open on the way to camp. There will be cows around, so make sure gates stay closed

#4 Have a good time. Its an enjoyable event. Get tired of classes? Throw a fishing line in. Keep it fun

What to bring

#1 Bag lunch for sat. I'm gonna bring sardines, and crackers. I would suggest something similar.

#2 Comfy old clothes. It is camping, you will get dirty lol

#3 Breakfast foods to throw in the pile for sat. morning. (See list started in post 15)

#4 Camping gear. I'll be in a sleeping bag, but tents are welcome too.

#5 A fishing pole if you'd like. We are right on the creek bank.

Hope to see you there, please let us know if your attending.

If you for any reason need to get ahold me on the 29th or 30th for directions or whatever, feel free to call or text me at 850-776-8205. I'd rather you pm or email me if its any day before then, but I'll be at home both days, so I can answer my cell immediately if I hear it. Thanks and hope to see lots of people there

Very cool. Add it to the calendar?

Might as well, I reckon, just to make it official.

Ya'll come - the more the merrier. Can't personally guarantee how informative it'll be, if only because I'm not one much on tootin' my own horn, but I'm sure good ol' WD-40 will cover what I forget and I think it's safe to say that it darn sure won't be boring.

Gonna try and talk the wife into it. What do we need to bring besides camping gear? Any shooting gonna happen? I may be able to get a guy who trains people in handguns to come instruct if so...

That would be crazy cool.

For camping gear, just whatever is comfy for you guys. If you want a tent, then by all means, but it isn't a requirement, I'll be sleeping on the ground. Please bring some food with you, there are a few restaurants, but they are 5-10 miles away. As far as shooting, some shooting would be ok, but I'd rather not have a ton of shooting going on, as I do rent the land, and the owner lives on site. I just don't wanna disturb him to much. Also, any shooters will have to pick up there brass. I really hope you can make it, I look forward to meeting you guys.

I'm gonna' chime in on the shooting question and mention that, while I'm a shooter myself, I've found that all too often, it becomes more about the shooting than the original intent of the get-together.

Don't get me wrong - I've got no problem with folks who would rather just go out and do some shooting - but it becomes problematic when someone is trying to teach something and can't be heard over the sound of gunfire, or when people lose interest in what's going on because they're over-anxious to make some noise and put some lead downrange.

And, then too, I'm pretty sure that if I were Spot's landlord, I'd probably be a lot more willing to put up with and even sanction this sort of thing if I didn't have to worry about a bunch of folks I don't know, shooting at God only knows what.

Anyway, that's my :2cents: and that and a five dollar bill will get you a small cup of coffee just about anywhere in the country.

Agreed!

Assuming we can still carry though. ;-)

Of course you can carry. I'll be carrying two cap and balls, and probably have my Marlin 336 down there for the random coyote, as they are hot and heavy in this area, and my landlord has a shoot on sight policy because they mess with the cattle.

Would this be a good time to bring a slingshot? Might be something else fun to bring to the "primitive skills?"

Ask yourself how ''primitive'' it is - most slingshots I've seen were not ''primitive'' so much as exceedingly low-tech. And would parts have been available 200 years ago if it broke?

Seriously, I promise not to care what you bring if you promise not to become offended if I don't go into great depth about it's various and sundry virtues and values. I mean, I've got a pretty good idea of what I'm going to talk about and demonstrate and slingshots won't be it. On the other hand, if someone else wants to do something with modern low-tech stuff - like slingshots - then they're free to have at it. And if you're any good with a genuine leather sling and want to show us how to use it, then by all means, we'll definitely talk about primitive weaponry.

Good enough answer?

Edited to add - On the other hand hand, this get-together isn't just about primitive technology or ''frontier'' skills, so by all means bring whatever you want to demonstrate and/or talk about.

On another note, we need to feed everyone. So if we all bring a few items, life will be much better for the majority. Their is a food city store about 5 miles from my place if you don't wanna travel all the way here with it. We need breakfast on the 30th, and a pack your own lunch for the the afternoon. So put your name down, and what you'll bring for breakfast. I'll have a large coffee pot, but feel free to bring your too ;) Also I'll have a couple of skillets, but feel free to bring anything you'd like to cook with. Thanks guys

I agree 100% I'm bringing my flintlock rifle for anyone to shoot, only with Spot's permission though. It's his place....I respect that!

I'll bring something to toss into the pot for breakfast/lunch/whatever, just not sure what it'll be, yet. Might be something as simple as hardtack or fresh picked blackberries or even dried fruit or heck, maybe I'll bring a dutch oven and make a special dessert for everyone. Just don't know yet.

For the most part, though - and I'm not trying to be snotty or elitist or anything - I figure that since I'm going to be talking the talk, I might as well walk the walk while I'm at it. That is to say, that I'll be putting to practical use what basic foodstuffs I carry and/or gather or otherwise 'procure' on an actual primitive trek or 'scout.' Not to say that I'll automatically turn down a slice of wild bacon if someone should toss it to me, but I'm thinking that I'll keep my personal 'kitchen' pretty simple.

Fellers (and 'fellerettes'), I can hardly wait to do this! Really looking to meeting up with everyone!
