D-Day for Gun Control

129.thumbnail.jpg Written By : Dick Morris

Without much fanfare and as little publicity as possible, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will go to New York City to sign the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), now in the final stages of negotiation at the U.N. The Treaty marks the beginning of an international crusade to impose gun controls on the United States and repeal our Second Amendment rights.

The ATT is nominally to stop international arms sales to gangs, criminals, and violent groups. But, as is so often the case with U.N. treaties, this is merely a convenient facade behind which to conceal the ATT’s true intent: to force gun control on the United States.

Secretary Clinton will doubtlessly succeed in inserting language into the treaty belying this intent and asserting that the treaty in no way is to restrict our right to bear arms. But even this language will be meaningless in the face of the overall construct set up by the treaty.

The ATT is to be administered by an International Support Unit (ISU), which will assure that “parties [to the treaty] small take all necessary measures to control brokering activities taking place within its territories…to prevent the diversion of exported arms to the illicit market or to unintended end users.â€

The ISU will determine whether nations are in compliance with this requirement and will move to assure that they do, indeed, take “all necessary measures.†This requirement will inexorably lead to gun registration, restrictions on ownership, and, eventually, even outright bans on firearms.

Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton said it best: “After the Treaty is approved and comes into force, you will find out that it has this implication or that implication and that it requires Congress to adopt legislation to restrict the ownership of firearms.â€

Bolton explains that “the Administration knows that it cannot obtain this kind of legislation in purely a domestic context. They will use an international agreement to get domestically what they couldn’t get otherwise.â€

The Treaty makes no sense otherwise except as a circuitous vehicle to achieve gun control in the U.S. The vast majority of all small arms and light arms exports (the nominal focus of the Treaty) are from sales by the governments of the U.S., Russia, China, Germany and Israel. Individual or corporate arms trafficking is a distinct minority. But it is to absorb the brunt of the Treaty’s regulations.

Insofar as the Treaty restricts governmental action, it bars governments from arming “illicit†groups in other nations. This provision could well be interpreted to ban U.S. arms sales to Iranian or Syrian dissidents. It could even be used by China to stop us from selling arms to Taiwan since the U.N. does not recognize Taiwan as a nation but rather an entity occupying territory that should belong to China.

And let’s not forget how well the United States has done in reducing murders and other crimes despite the absence of comprehensive gun controls and bans. In 1993, there were 24,350 homicides in the U.S. Last year, there were 13,576 (despite a growth of sixty million in the population). Only 9,000 of these murders involved a firearm. (Less than one-third of the highway deaths each year in the U.S.)

Obama has left gun control off his legislative agenda so far. Now his strategy becomes apparent: Use international treaties to achieve it.

And bear in mind that under the Supremacy Clause of our constitution, we would be obliged to enforce the ATT despite the Second Amendment. International treaties have the force of constitutional law in the U.S.

If it is ratified at the lame duck session of the Senate this year, then nothing can ever change it. Goodbye Second Amendment.

Right now, we need 34 courageous Republican Senators to stop up and demand that Hillary not sign the Treaty and indicate their intention to vote against its ratification if it is submitted. Only such an action can stop this treachery in its tracks.

It seems that Mr Morris has come around and now has the "Force" with him. I figure it's good to have him because anyone who was instrumental in getting Bill elected twice knows the system well and best to have him on your side. We will find out shortly if Dicks prediction comes true. I say the odds are in his favor and we will be fighting the treaty shortly in the Senate and thats an if at best. No doubt it would be best not to get to that as Dick points out. Sad to say I wonder how our two TN senators would vote?

"Even though the judge's political and judicial philosophy may be different than mine especially regarding 2nd amendment rights, I will vote to confirm because she is well qualified by experience, temperament, character and intellect to serve."

I think it was more of he and Hillary, well, and Bill, having a falling out. Plus, just because he worked for them

doesn't make him have the same ideology.

Other than that bit, I thought it was interesting when he changed sides, if you will. I don't remember Morris

particularly showing his personal preference with the AWB. Maybe, I guess.

I remember him being on Neal Boortz' show a few years ago. Don't remember exactly when. And he stated that he and Neal were on different sides of the issue. He was on the side opposing 'assault weapons'. It's been a few years and I don't remember the exact quotes. Doesn't matter really, as long as he's really changed his stance.

Glad to have him. Unfortunately, in my observation, his predictions have been mistaken, sometimes.

If you wanna choke on some real b.s, cruise through this:

http://www.un.org/disarmament/

This is so patently ridiculous, even for the UN. So having an office in Nepal is important somehow. This crock of a conference lasts 25 days? Pleeeease. Art for Peace, anyone? Any U.S. senator who even remotely thinks about voting for this is.... well... it ain't right. Read "Disarmament: A Basic Guide" if you really want to puke, especially the part on small arms. (Rant off). Thanks for reading.

after looking over the numbers of deaths/homicides via gun in USA which is in the 9-10K range it seems to me

like banning guns is a waste of time ,the numbers a low !! Deaths via auto crashes were in the 50K range per year

but the over whelming winner in all deaths per year is Heart Attacks with over 500k deaths a year

I think the UN needs to go after McDonalds........That Clown has alone killed hundreds of thousands just by himself

True, all treaties must be ratified. However, how in the world can we count on the congress to protect us...they passed the Healthcare bill without reading it. The Supreme Court, we'll we recently found out how reliable they are. Anyone who is oblivious to everything going on these days really should wake up and pay attention. I bet most of the country had no idea what the ATT even is...they will be the one's begging us to protect them when things turn to turmoil.

Dick Morris still "loves" Bill Clinton, and detests Hillary with every fiber of his being.

So will this treaty stop the ATF from illegally exporting arms to mexico

Ha ha...if you think this will prevent the U.S. from doing any backroom deals you're crazy. This is about control not arms trade. It's a joke, it's treasonous, and we won't stand for it. When's the last time we did anything the U.N. said we had to do...we'll only do that when it's in the mutual interest of the governement...conveinent how that works.

Treasonous stuff coming out of Washington seems to be a regular occurance these days. How Obama Care was passed showed us there are no limits. If guncontrol happens it won't hit us straight on and at "high noon". And we thought our elected leaders read bills before voting for them. Silly Us!

Big difference in passing a bill and treaty ratification (which requires a 2/3 approval from the Senate) - where does Obama get 67 Senate votes to ratify this?

Answer: he doesn't.

You're probably right, Dan. Morris isn't what I'd call an ideologue anyway. He's just good at what he does.

As much as I despise Clinton, et ux, he is still much more of a likeable person than the "messiah".

I detest Hilary and Bill also, as well as Obama, Biden, Reid, Pelosi, Shuman, Barny, Waters, Jackson, Jackson, Schultz, Conyers, Waxman, Rahm Emmanuel, Boxer, Feinstein, and every other politician with a D beside their name. And a few R's.
