Old axe find

Recommended Posts

if any of you are into old axes....I found this old axe head on an old trailer. It was buried in a bunch of junk that I was loading up to carry off. It is in excellent shape. The rust is pretty much all surface rust. Which is amazing considering it has been outside for years. Maybe some of you will know...I think it is an old Plumb. The "M 3-1/2" marking is all there is. It does appear that it used to be blue. Can't tell it from any of the pics but there was a little on the bottom around the eye. This is my first axe restore. It is soaking in vinegar now. Can't wait til in the morning to see what it looks like. Below is a link to the only info I could find about it. Towards the bottom of the page you will see a "M 3-1/2" marking that looks like the one on mine. This is what makes me think it is a Plumb. This is all I can find. If anybody has any additional info that would be great. Other than that keep checking back and I will post pics of the progres.

Collins and Council both marked their axes like that. The 3 1/2 should be the weight. Put a good quality edge and a fresh handle in that sucker and you'll enjoy a good quality made axe for years.i love old axes, we have 10 or 15 single, double, broad and hewing axes, and they are all older than 40 years.

Great find! I recommend the book The Axe Book. It covers this style, why it works so well and how to haft it properly.

Basically the light weight, large bite and short OAL length lead to an accurate axe you get a lot of work done with. Compare that with the new Chinese axes that are just the opposite in every spec.
