Permanent fix for play

Recommended Posts

Started to get off topic on another thread so I thought I would bring the question over here.

I have a lot of play in my upper and lower and in the front handguard. I have a Sig556r (7.62x39 variant). Have used some gorilla tape on the handguard where it meets the gas block, and an accu wedge. But it drives me nuts to have to rig it this way, not too mention, I don't really care to have a piece of rubber floating around in my lower. Anyone have any suggestions, is this something a smith could fix. Thanks!

Regarding the Accuwedge, here is a good thread beating it to death elsewhere, comprised of people who rely on their rifles to get them home alive:

Cliff's notes:

  • Looseness between upper and lower receiver doesn't affect accuracy.
  • Inserting unnecessary foreign objects into your rifle's working-space is asking for trouble.
  • Don't do it.

If you have access to a milling machine or a friend who does & they are competent at using it you could easily add a "tensioning screw" to your lower. The tensioning screw would allow you to create a pressure point between the upper/lwr receivers reducing the "felt" rack in your weapon.

Seperate the upper & lwr receivers, Remove the pistol grip, drill & tap a 1/4-20 tapped hole in-line with the take down pin from where the pistol grip mounts. Use a 1/4-20 setscrew with a nylon or brass tip- order from Fastenal or MSC.  Re- assemble the receivers, adjust the setscrew to the desired tension you want between the receivers & install your pistol grip back on the lwr.

Dont try this if you are not proficient using a milling machine as there is risk to damaging your receiver if done improperly.

This is a common feature found on most High end AR15/10 rifles
