Cc at the gun show

I was reading about the bass pro and I have a question about the gun show. And I didnt want to hijack that thread. I went to a gun show and just walked in done my thing and then left. But the next time I thought, hey everyone is having their guns checked so I did. They made me unload the mag and they kept the ammo till I came out. Needless to say that was the last time I had my carry weapon checked. Is the checking of the firearms just for ones that you will have out trying to trade or poke at people. Are you supposed to check your cc gun? I dont think I've seen the gun show posted but Ive never looked very good.

The way I read the signs is that even your carry weapon applies. It doesn't say that you cant have a loaded magazine in your pocket that could easily be inserted if needed. I don't want to leave my ammunition with anyone just as I would not leave my carry weapon with anyone.

Well A few years back here in Middle TN, some yahoo loaded up and shot someone at a show.

Since then, it is a check em at the door policy for all shows I have been too.

Besides, have you seen some of the freaks at these shows?

Let me ask you something does the law say to unload your carry gun at guns shows and do they have to post it correctly in order to make you unload your carry gun?

AFAIK there is no law that requires you to unload your weapon at a gun show.

But as with carry in general, posted or not, it always falls back to that, you have to follow the rules of the property owner and/or the person in control of the property while you are on it....or leave.

Tell you a funny one. I went to a show in Knoxville a few years ago, when I was reaching for my wallet my shirt went back to far and exposed my weapon. I had my badge on in front of my weapon. The lady taking the tickets told me that I couldn't carry my gun into the show. I explained to her that I was law enforcement and can carry my weapon at all times. She proceeded to tell me that I could not and would be escorted off the property by law enforcement if I did not comply. I asked to speak with her boss. The guy comes up, I show him my credentials, he tells me that I can't carry a loaded gun into the show, because they had the right to refuse to allowed armed carry. I attempted to explain the TCA to them and got a blank look. He decides to go and get one of the officers working the show. The Deputy comes up and looks at my ID, turns to the workers and says "yeah, he can carry and you can't prevent it". They start to argue with him saying that I wasn't in uniform and he explains TCA again. Finally it was sorted out and I went in with my gun as is. It really annoyed me that these persons didn't know the law. I started thinking about CCW persons and why they don't want them carrying as well, prevents crime you know. I understand the safety issue, if your bringing a gun to sell or get worked on, but if your carrying and are going to keep it in the holster unless needed, I don't see the problem. I get really irritated at those who want to stifle freedom, yet wish to profit off of it by selling the things we need. Rant off.

Yeah, but like I said before, it is all the result of the Idiots that attend shows and discharge weapons in side the shows and they HURT innocent people.

As a trained and certified LEO, they should not have argued with you but welcomed you in for free!

BUT, with insurance for the shows being so high because of the idiots, I understand WHY they are so anal about it.

Again, it does not make them right, but remember, rules and laws are made up AFTER someone screws up.

JLowe I agree 100% they couldn't stop you from going in armed, but couldn't they have stopped you from going in in general?

What I mean is just because someone is a LEO they can't come into my house unless they have a reason to. Or the guy at the convenience store can tell anyone to get out for pretty much any reason (His property his rules as is always said).

I'm not trying to start anything...just a bit more discussion on the law. I don't think the law specifically address this, but maybe one difference is if you are still within the jurisdiction of the department you work for. Such as if you are Metro Nashville officer and the show was in Nashville, since you are in your jurisdiction they couldn't stop you, but if you are from somewhere else in TN they could. Again not stop you from going in armed, if they let you in they have to let you go armed, I agree, but not let you in period.

Thoughts?

I'm there to handle, show and tell, and play with guns. The fear of showing off the loaded one in my pocket, is too much. Just not worth it. I generally don't carry any place I expect armed security.

"yeah, he can carry and you can't prevent it".

now this is one thing that I can't understand. why can an off duty LEO, having no more and no fewer rights than me, able to carry anywhere he pleases, while I have to leave mine in the car just to go pay the cable bill. I mean, that's the whole point of licensed carry isn't it? to make sure that the people who are "allowed" to exercise their rights are responsible enough to do so?

I go to Bass Pro alot and always carry. But just befor i enter i take the clip out.

I look at it this way there are at lest 3 armed sales people at the gun shop so if anything goes down they can handle it. :screwy:

Ummmm, no. I hope you are kidding.

Why would you take the mag out? Why would you risk and bet your life on a couple of guys behind the gun counter that may or may not be armed, that may or may not have any training, may or may not give a crap about you, or anyone else if the SHTF.

There is nothing that states that a HCP holder has to disarm. If you are getting service or returning a gun, then yes, that company issued rule applies to that. If I had a gun that I was returning, bringing in for service, I would follow those rules, but my side arm would be on my side, 12 rounds in the magazine that is inserted into my XD and one round in the pipe, ready to go.

I have to agree with db99wj. Not sure what you are really trying to accomplish by taking the clip out.

Of course the popcorn icon strikes me as just wanting to make a statement and see what happens...

Why are you going naked to pay your cable bill?

Because of State Law. Keep in mind that the vast majority of LEOs want law abiding responsible citizens to carry. Nothing makes most LEOs happier than when Joe Citizen offs one of these scumbags (read; Antioch approx. 2 weeks ago).

Back to LEO carry,

A good example is carry in public parks. Citizens with a HCP can't carry in public parks where as a LEO can.

In fact the TCA 39-17-350 specifically states the only places LEOs can't carry: schools, without permission from principle, when drinking alcoholic beverages, where alcoholic beverages are sold (HR 218 voids that one) and when in court during precedings while off duty.

As far as private property goes, if someone were to ask me to leave / not carry, Id give my little speach and go.

Its because LEO don't carry Hi Points.

I agree with not allowing loaded guns into gun shows. It may be your carry weapon, and YOU may not touch it. But I guarentee there is somebody who will go in with a loaded gun, not intending to try a new holster or to sell the gun, and they will end up handling the thing.

I carry, check my unloaded gun with the cops at the door and keep my speedloader in my pocket. If I need it I have it.

+1 That's exactly what I do except mine is a mag for my Sig P226. Until they start body searches this will not be detected. All they could do is ask me to leave. Big deal!

I would have thought that the gunshow operator could have asked the off duty officer to leave and he would have had to go since he was not there on official duty. Why would he have the right to enter? I personally don't have a problem with an LEO entering a gun show armed but I would not want to take the chance on what some of these idiots that you see at gun shows would do if their weapons were loaded. They could still be doing the same thing that I am so are we ever really safe?

It is not illegal to carry at a gun show in TN. I generally carry a small revolver in my pocket and walk right in. It is none of anyone's business that i am carrying. I don't carry what i intend to show or try in holsters.
