Windows failed updates

I'd reboot, then log back on and click the Start button. From the run box enter this:

WUAUCLT /DETECTNOW       <enter>

 

That will force wi\\Windows to recheck for updates again. After a few minutes, look in the area over by the clock to see the Updates icon. Click on it and follow the prompts to install the updates. Hopefully the second time is the charm. Often an update fails because it depends on another update to be installed first. Hopefully those were installed in the first round last night.

I will give it a shot. It needs to be typed exactly as you have, correct?

A lot of times Windows Updates will detect a whole bunch of needed updates but some may be superseded by a newer version of the same update also on the list.  In those cases you will see a random string of failures like this.  If you really want to get into it you can track down the logs and look them over but if it isn't finding these updates again as available then my money is on supersedence.

It appears that you may not be the only one experiencing the problem. I found a few others too. This particular person discovered that it finally updated after waiting for a while.

 

Have you gone to the Control Panel / Windows Update and tried installing them one by one?

 

For grins, you might try this: Close all windows. Open My Computer. Right-click the C:\ drive and select Properties.Make sure you are on the General tab, and click on Disk Cleanup. From the window that pops up, click Clean up System Files. from teh next window that pops up, you can select a couple dozen options of junk to remove from your PC. Select anything you wnat, but be sure to select Windows Update Cleanup, and maybe Temporary files. When done checking boxes, click OK.

 

You might reboot once more, run that wuauclt /detectnow   command once more and see what happens.

TDR go into c:\Windows and look for a file called WindowsUpdate.log. This file contains all of the logging information for Windows Update. Look for error codes in the form of 0x0000000 and the messaging that goes along with it. Post it here and we can help you research it.

 

***edit*** forgot to add, you'll want to open the log file then scroll to the bottom and work your way up. Things at the top will be from older dates.

Are you browsing the internet through a proxy or a firewall (physical or software). Are you running any antivirus?

 

 

***edit*** You might try running the "fixit'" for your version of Windows from here to reset update services back to default: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 

Make sure you pick the one for your OS.

No proxy. The only firewall that I'm aware of would be the Windows firewall. I'm running Trend Micro Antivirus.

After running the Fixit, I checked the Windows Update log, and it looks as if the updates are now installed. Am I seeing that correctly, or are those different updates?

Try to check for updates again and see if you get the same error/more updates/all updates installed.

 

If not, This tool specifically states your error code as something it resolves. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821. Again, pick the one that fits your OS.

 

From here, I'm thinking we would need to start eliminating things like the antivirus and possibly take you into safe mode w/ networking to troubleshoot. Push comes to shove, i'll see if you're interested in doing a join.me session and i can help you fix it over the phone.

So the updates that are showing as successfully downloaded today are not the same updates that were unsuccessful yesterday?

It says the failed ones are installed now, but we need to validate that the error searching for udpates is gone, or you'll just get it again next time.
