Baton carry

Neat looking handle with the leather, etc.  Next time, instead of a rake handle, look at Home Depot for one of those 'industrial' type push broom handles.  My local HD has them in two thicknesses.  I got the thicker one to make (yet another) walking staff out of (got the idea from a video on youtube by preparedmind101) and it is pretty beefy.  They also sell wooden dowels that are even thicker than those.  Imagine a good, strong, thick wooden shaft with a 'knob' style handle rather than a crosspiece handle.  Make the knob handle by taking one of those sort of decorative (as in closed/domed at the top) lug nuts intended for use on a semi, threading the top of the shaft to screw into it and epoxying it into place.  You could go a little more 'stealth' by covering the lug nut and the section of shaft just below it in leather.

I have also wondered about using a couple of pieces of the thicker walled PVC pipe - maybe in 3/4 inch or even 1 inch - and filling the pipe with some kind of lightweight resin, epoxy or something like that.  PVC pipe will apparently get soft and allow you to shape it much like kydex if you heat it (although you have to be careful as PVC pipe reportedly gives off fumes that are somewhat toxic when heated so you'd want to do it outdoors and wear a mask.)  I'm thinking that a simple crook or even something a little more decorative could be created for the handle by slightly heating, bending (or shaping) the PVC before filling with the resin, epoxy or whatever.  You could also heat and twist the shaft, etc. for an interesting look. Then the whole thing could be painted with whatever paint scheme one wanted - a camo pattern (something like a Mossy Oak hunting camo pattern might be fun), a theme to match your favorite sports team, flowers and peace signs or whatever.  A really skilled hand might even paint it to look like wood, at least to a passing glance.  I wonder if it couldn't even be dipped using one of those water soluble 'decal' type kits.  At any rate, I'm thinking that if the epoxy, resin or whatever was used to fill the PVC pipe were sturdy enough it might be sort of a 'poor man's' (I prefer 'do it yourselfer's) version of that Cold Steel walking stick I linked to in my last post.

Good idea, how about the ball of a trailor hitch?

Hadn't thought of that. Only problem there would be that, unless I am mistaken, trailer hitch balls have an integrated bolt that allows it to be secured through a hole in the hitch, itself.  That means you'd have to have a shaft thick enough that you could drill it and insert the bolt into the shaft.  That was why I liked the idea of the large lug nut - the shaft, itself, could be made to just screw up into the lug nut.

Along those lines, though, I have bought some pretty cool looking, antique metal door knobs (no keyhole) at flea markets and the like with the idea of using those for handles.  The bolt that fits them is thin enough that drilling the shaft to accommodate it shouldn't be a problem.  I will get around to using some of those door knobs one of these days and I think that, if I can execute it well, the combo will make a really nice walking stick.

If you'll take a solid spine magazine, open it to the mid way point, and lay as many quarters as will fit side by side down the seam, then close and roll it, it makes an amazingly tough impact and thrusting weapon.

An equally good improvised weapon of sorts unlikely to be noticed is a thuggie scarf. It can be utilized as a distraction device, to block or trap opponents blows, a strangling device or striking weapon. Its dirt simple to make, a large bandanna, silver dollars or large metal washers and tied knot(s) in a corner or corners. If you don't believe this item can be brutally painful then you never got popped by a wet towel.

I'll have to try that. I used to carry a padlock with a bandana threaded through it for "locking up my bike" tucked down in my back pocket. Makes a pretty good sap if needed

Well, I found an old metal broom handle, it's pretty tough, Then you can see what I used for a handle. I shaped and forced 6" of hammer handle down the tube, the rest of the tube I forced schedual 40 1/2" PVC for extra strength and bolted both in. I'm going to get some skinnier bolts and nuts and wrap the whole cane in leather, handle and tube.

May be a little obvious what the cane is intended for.  :)

LOL Maybe a little, but I like the heck out of the concept. :pleased:

I'm looking forward to seeing the pics after the wrap.

Here you go, I know I can do a prettier job if I had was a little more patient. That's been a fault of mine.

Now in no way does the handle look like a ball peen hammer now.

Looks pretty cool but I honestly think I would like it better if you had just wrapped the shaft all the way up to the bottom of the hammer head and left the hammer head, itself, exposed.  In some ways, I also think that would be a little more 'stealth', believe it or not, as someone seeing it might think 'neat idea for a cane' rather than 'he is trying to hide that hammer head for some reason.'  Plus I think that bright, shiny ball peen hammer head makes an attractive handle.  Someone with engraving skills (meaning someone other than me, for sure) could really make such a handle look super nice - and much less 'weapon like' - with just a few, traditional type details.

Looks like I am not the only one to think of engraving a hammer head.  I was envisioning something exactly like this and was a little surprised to find that someone had done it (found on the Internet - not my pic.)  Now, imagine this as a walking cane handle (not sure but I think this one is still simply on a hammer type handle.)

That's pretty cool, either they chrome plated it or it will have to have constant maintenance for rust or keep it dry all the time.
