LOS ANGELES - A man trying to kill his girlfriend by stopping a car in front of an approaching train was himself killed Monday when the train hit the vehicle and launched it into him as he tried to flee, police said.

The girlfriend survived.

The man drove the car in front of a group of other vehicles stopped at a railroad crossing in the San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Sunland, Officer Mike Lopez said.

The driver, who was seen arguing with his girlfriend, parked the car on the tracks and jumped out, leaving her behind, Lopez said.

A northbound commuter train hit the rear of the car, hurling it into the man. The girlfriend was taken to the hospital, where she was in stable condition, Lopez said.

"She gets hit by a train and lives. He gets hit by his own car and he dies," Lopez said.

The train was heading from downtown to Lancaster in northern Los Angeles County at the time of the 12:08 p.m. crash, said Denise Tyrrell, a spokeswoman for Metrolink.

There were no injuries on the train, which carried 132 passengers and crew members, Tyrrell said. The train had superficial damage.

The train's speed wasn't immediately known. The limit in the area is 79 mph, Tyrrell said. At that speed, it would take one-third of a mile to stop, she said.

It is highly unusual for someone to survive being struck by a train, Tyrrell said.

"The train to your car is like your car to a soda pop can. It's just not going to be a fair fight," Tyrrell said.

We should ban vehicles which can hold more than 10 gallons of fuel. It is simply wasteful, and noone needs to drive any farther than that.

Bright colored paint which 'looks' aggressive should also be banned, since we all know that such serves no practical purpose to vehicles on public roads used for daily commuting.

All vehicles should come equipped with a 'wheel-lock' which renders it immobile until the registered operator removes it only for use when absolutely necessary.

Features such as hood-scoops, loud exhaust systems, aggressive high-traction tires, spoilers, and other items which increase a vehicle's appearance of deadly high-performance are not considered relevant to the practical use of basic transportation.

We believe in the collective privilege of efficient transportation for the public, and encourage everyone who decides to not walk to invest in a sensible bicycle, bus-pass, or electric scooter.

Please be aware that the Transportation Dept's agents will be roaming the country to enforce our new policies, they will be easily recognized by their bright red Ford Excursions, which have been upgraded to keep up with the performance requirements of chasing down 'car-nuts' and 'street-racers'.

I'm almost surprised the four-barrel carb didn't make HR 1022. It sounds like a scary "assault weapon" feature.

Oh, BTW, anything over 100hp is an "assault vehicle" and not suitable for civilian use.

ban any and all man made instrument that has killed people inadvertently...and while we're at it, ban heights that kills people when they fall, ban all holes because people are stupid enough to step into them...ban caves.... all sinkholes, caves, ledges that have NOT killed anyone must be registered with the government just in case they DO kill someone.
