Need a good ammo cabinet...

Recommended Posts

Anyone got any recommendations for a ammo cabinet that can hold a lot of weight and has closing doors (dont really care how secure the locks are since its just the ammo). I have been looking everywhere, but all I can find in a cabinet are the rubbermaid types that dont have any shelf capacity or the open stackable metal wire shelves that have lots of load bearing but arent enclosed which I dont want because I would like to keep my ammo dry (its in the garage but I would like to be able to use a dehumidifier with the storage). Right now most of it stays in the safe and I would rather use that for gun storage.

I have one of those $150-200 metal cabinets that you can buy at costco / sams. However I have read that you should not store ammo / powder / etc in a metal cabinet for safety reasons (if there is a fire you just potentially created a large amount of very sharp shrapnel). I am thinking of putting up some wooden cabinets for this purpose.

Someone on another thread (Astra?) had a great idea if you have the room and the wife doesn't object. He suggested an old deep freezer. Someone would probably give you one just to get rid of it. They are already designed to support a lot of weight and they are air tight. Add a padlock and hasp (if you want to) and your good to go.

I would never do something like that! AND it ain't none of nobody's business why there's an old Fridgidaire that's not plugged up, with heavy steel hasps and padlocks on the lid. Jeez, nosy people.

:clap::bat::rofl::rofl::rofl::D:stalk:

Kidding aside, you can get several 50cal ammo cans in one. AND, if you lock it up super fortress style, it will BE THERE. Who's gonna tote it off?

adj shelves...and cheaper.

I have that exact storage cabinet with the 4 adjustable shelves and it locks. It is 78"x36"x24". Tennsco brand. I have a source who sells them brand new, in shipping wrappers, for $100 each! Plus each sale benefits the American Cancer Society. The 'source' lost his 34 year old daughter and his wife to breast cancer within a few months of each other.

Whats the weight capacity on the shelves? Most storage cabinets are only rated at 30lbs per shelf. If its significantly higher I would mind buying one from your friend.

I would guess that's about right. I have some sag when its full of ammo. Not real bad, but enough. I compensate by putting ammo on the bottom shelf.

Otherwise they work great for my other gun related storage.
