This is just a thought.....but what does everyone think about retiring Marswolf's post count? I know that retiring his avatar had been brought up in another thread.....but I thought that maybe retiring his post count could forever honor him here on TGO. It could go like this.....when anyone reaches the 5,985 postcount that Marswolf had.....their post count could just stop there in remembrance and honor of Mars. It could either just show the 5,985 post count or better yet, it could just not have a number anymore and simply say "Marswolf." It would be everyone's goal to instead of having the highest post count on TGO to just simply reach "Marswolf." Hey, it's just a thought. I'm getting ready to leave for church and thought I'd throw it out there....see what everyone thinks.

Yes, the heavier all steel snubbies absorb recoil very nicely. But they're HEAVY and a PITA to carry all day long, especially for most women. Lightweight in any carry gun means a lot to me.....second only to dependability. It's much easier for men, who usually wear belts, to carry a heavy gun than it is for a woman. I very frequently carry my Ultra-Lite .38 in a belly band because I don't wear a belt. When I have it on I sometimes forget it's there because it's so light and comfortable....and I even carry an extra speedloader with it.

Great advice!

Did anyone watch 20/20 before the debate last night? Diane Sawyer said in the beginning something to the effect that she would try to present McCain and Obama equally and impartially. Well......several times she asked McCain a question and as he was answering she would cut him off and talk over him. That was very rude and disrespectful IMO. I can't stand her myself.

Spend a little more and get something besides a Taurus. Taurus makes nice revolvers.....but I wouldn't trust my life to one of their autos.

Tower, I said that LEO's train and shoot more than anyone else......I was really speaking of the majority there......not you personally As for there being more 1911's in the hands of the average non-LEO gun owner.....you're probably right there. However, the majority of those gun owners don't train and shoot like LEO's do. Sure, many of them go to the range and target shoot, but they don't do the same type of high stress shooting/training that LEO's do. Most of the ND's I hear about happen with LEO's, not your average citizen gun owner. So, I still say it's all in the numbers. The OP likes the Glock, says it feels good in his hand. I'm not telling him, yes, by all means, get the glock. I actually recommended a revolver first, as I would with any novice shooter. I think he should really shoot several different kinds of guns, like many have suggested here, before he makes his final decision. But I also think if he ends up liking the Glock best, it certainly wouldn't be a bad choice......but I'd definitely shoot a few hundred rounds with it to get used to the feel and the trigger before I put it in the nightstand drawer.

I'm sorry Tower, but I have to put in my .02 on this one. Do you know why you hear of more ND's with Glocks than with 1911's? Because the vast majority of LEO's carry Glocks, not 1911's. I'm not positive on the percentage of LEO's that carry glocks, but isn't it over like 80%? What's the percentage that carry 1911's? Of course you're going to hear about more ND's with Glocks than 1911's. And most of the ND's you hear about are with LEO's.....because they train and shoot more than anyone else. It's all in the numbers....not the guns.

Hillbilly J, you definitely have a right to your opinion, but you really shouldn't judge all Glocks by a G36. That one is very different than all the others.

+1 Be careful, once you take a sip you just can't stop!

Strick, no I haven't stayed there but the name sounds familiar. Is it on the river? I have rented a cabin there (same one) a few times. It's privately owned and has a huge oak tree growing right up through the front porch.....has a hot tub on the porch too.....a fireplace....and furnished with some beautiful antiques inside....very cool. The lady that owns it has several that she rents out....I believe she calls them Hideaway Cabins and the one I like is called the Crow's Nest. Townsend is absolutely my favorite place to go around here. I love driving/hiking through Cades Cove too. I actually haven't been down there since my son was born. I need to take him down there, maybe go into Cades Cove and hike a couple trails. I used to hike all the time, but my knees are totally shot and I'm lucky if I can limp a mile these days.....but I still like to push myself and hike as much as I can. So anyone know what's going on there for Old Timer's Day?

Yes, it does! Especially if you fry up the tenderloin in an iron skillet and then make gravy with the grease.....and some homemade biscuits to pour the gravy over mmmmm!

My grandfather-in-law told me that if a deer doesn't drop fairly quick after you shoot it, and it winds up running for a while, that the adrenaline it produces will completely ruin the meat. I've had about 20 kills in my lifetime, and probably 5 or so ran and I had to track them. I never remembered tasting any difference in those deer compared to the ones that dropped quickly. Of course, all those deer were Illinois corn fed, if that makes any difference. Anyone ever heard of or had any experience with this happening? Also, I've just recently been told from a couple different people that soaking your deer meat in buttermilk for a few hours/overnight before you cook it will take out the wild gamey taste that these tennessee deer seem to have. Anyone ever try that? Does it really help? One reason I quit hunting is because I don't like the taste of the deer here compared to Illinois deer.

Suggestions for reasonably priced ($500-$900) shotgun
PackinMama replied to catsbackr's topic in Long Guns
My vote would be for the Remington 1100. I've known many people over the years that had Remington 1100's and I've had the pleasure of shooting a few myself. Very nice auto loading shotgun. I've never known one to jam and they're very well made. -
glockkiddo, I love the baby glocks too. I have a 27 (and a 23).....I personally like the .40 s&w round better than the 9mm. My second favorite for carry is the .38 snubbies. The ultralites are so comfortable to carry and easy to conceal, with no sacrifice of knock down power, especially with the +p's. Welcome to the board btw!! I read in another one of your posts that you teach womens shooting classes, that's awesome! We've really been trying to get more women to join our group here......maybe you could help us spread the word about TGO to more women shooters This is a great place to learn anything and everything about guns & shooting, 2nd ammendment issues, etc. I must warn you however that it can be addicting and will make you want to buy more guns

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that, from experience too, not just hearsay. I have a 12 guage with a pistol grip and it's really a pleasure to shoot. I have arthritis pretty bad, and I still don't have a problem with it. It's just a matter of getting used to it I think. If I were to stiffen up and try to hold it like a handgun when I shot it, I guess it would kick pretty hard. The trick is to not lock up your arms, keep it down beside your hip, and let it ride back a bit on the recoil. A 20 gauge has much less recoil than a 12 and a .410 is a breeze.

Like I said earlier, I'd go with a .38 revolver or a Glock 9mm for handgun choices. I really don't understand why some people say Glocks are so dangerous for the novice shooter. IMO If you have ANY gun in your hand with the safety off, a round ready, and your finger on the trigger, it's dangerous. In a high stress situation, you basically have just as much chance of accidentally squeezing the trigger on a Glock as any other gun, including a shotgun. Yes, I realize that a Glock has a lighter trigger pull than a revolver.....but not if that revolver is cocked....and as far as shotguns go, my shotgun triggers don't feel any harder to squeeze than my Glocks. Bottom line, if you like the Glock and it feels good, go with it. Just be sure that you and your wife shoot it at least a couple hundred rds. before you put it into home defense duty. That being said, if you want a weapon just for home defense, I'd go with a shotgun. Depending on your wife's size and physical condition, I'd get either a 20 guage or a .410 pump. Double barrels are cool, but you only have two shots before you have to reload.....not good IMO. You can take any shotgun and change out the stock to a pistol grip, shorten the barrel, and get an extended mag tube. Then you can outfit it with whatever you want.....a light, laser, sling, side saddle, etc.....to make it the perfect home defense tactical shotgun. My mother is 78 and I got her a Mossy .410 pump that she keeps right beside her bed. I let her shoot it and even though she's very weak and has osteoporosis, she had no problem whatsoever hip shooting with it. Have fun deciding what you want! If I were you, I'd take up some of the offers to go shooting and try out a few different types of guns. Nothing like trying them out before you buy

TGO trade/meet/picnic day sounds like fun to me.....especially here in East TN!

Fivestring, what's "Old Timer's Day?" I love Townsend and I love going there this time of year. I might take a ride down there with my son Saturday. Are they having bluegrass music? Do you know if Timbers restaurant still in business? That place is awesome!
-
May I ask why you've dismissed revolvers? They are one of the simplest handguns to handle and load......great for women that don't have much experience with a gun. Taurus even makes a 9mm revolver. If you've got to have a semi auto in 9mm, I'd go with a Glock 19 9mm for home defense. Glocks make the simplest autos available. If .40 s&w (my favorite) might be an option for you, www.Budsgunshop.com has factory refurbished Glock 22's with night sights and two mags for $399. That's a heck of a deal.

FMJ, SP, HP...Which is best for All Purpose in an AK?
PackinMama replied to PackinMama's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Tower, Love the pic! Where were you guys when that was taken? Is that crate I see over on the left full of AK's too? -
It's definitely a nice looking gun! Be sure to let us know how it shoots

I just got my first AK-47 and as I was shopping for ammo, I realized that I had no idea which one to buy for all purpose use. I want to have plenty on hand for not just plinking, but also self defense and hunting if needed. I was going to go with HP's, but then I thought "what if it has feeding problems?" I wanted to order 500 rds. to start off with and I didn't want to get stuck with something that would have feeding issues....as I've read that HP's sometimes do. So then I was torn between SP's and FMJ's. To be honest, I don't really know the advantages/disadvantages between the two. So, I basically took a shot in the dark and ordered 500 rds. of 125 gr. Barnaul SP's, along with 60 rds. of Federal Power Shok SP's to keep in the gun for home defense. So, what do you guys think? If I want to stockpile some ammo for the AK, and I want it for plinking, self defense, and hunting......which would be best? FMJ, SP, or HP? Also, which bullet weight would be best, 125 gr. or 154 gr.?

I have a 23 and a 27 too, and I agree with you 100% With all the fuss these days over mini auto's, I'm surprised they haven't already made a mini Glock in .380.

Nice AK! Hey, if you guys live close to the Morristown area, you should pm me and you can come over to my place to shoot. Your girlfriend and I can shoot/compare our AK's Tell her I hope her knee starts feeling better soon. My knees are completely shot.....I need total replacements in both knees. I'm just putting it off as long as possible.

Dang, I wish I had an extra $500! That would be awesome to have as a backup parts kit for my new Yugo AK underfolder.
