I've got a RIA Tactical... Shot the heck out of it, then went through it with a Clark compensated match barrel, Cylinder and Slide internals* and Wolff springs and it's a 100% reliable naildriver that can best 1911s which cost 3x more. Personally, I would never buy an expensive 1911 unless I just wanted the name. *Thanks to Jeff at Hero Gear

Howabout a Romak III? (Dragunov clone)... 7.62x54R russian ammo is cheap and is in the .308/.30-06 power-range. Decent accuracy, and semi-auto.

I prefer open sights on this gun, for what it's intended... plus, I am trying to keep it as light at possible. Considering putting a Trijicon RX30 on it though, eventually, but I'd like to run it through a Carbine class first, just to see if I'm as much more comfortable with the irons vs. optic as I feel so far.

Best case, yes, you go home. Not all shooters are charged, or taken to jail even (actually, I've read of very few cases of self defense in which charges were filed)

Hollow Points (45 ACP in particular)

Just see for yourself... go buy two watermelons, shoot one with a FMJ and shoot the other with a JHP and see the difference. Edit: Just for conversation-sake, it is far more likely that you will penetrate walls due to missing than by overpenetration, statistically... and a JHP will penetrate just as much drywall as a FMJ. -
If that was entirely the case, then (for example) what makes a bullet driven by a .357magnum more effective than a .38special? It's the same bullet diameter, and the same potential for expansion, and both will penetrate the human body... resulting in the same permanent wound track. Or, why the .223 enjoys better effectiveness than 9mm, even though it penetrates less and punches a smaller hole. The heavier bullet weights simply ensure penetration, which is the FBI requirement. The FBI study regarding temporary cavities is 20 years old (before they discovered that .357sig is one of the best manstoppers available, in contradiction to the 'bigger hole is better' theory).

I've got a Nikon P90 I like to take pictures of the outdoors with, landscapes, etc... even out at the range. I wouldn't consider myself a 'photographer' by any means though. It's just nice to have a way to capture a high-resolution 'moment' when it catches my eye.

.223 bullets penetrate less because of lower inertia, they deposit their energy faster. The only way to deposit the energy of a .45acp faster and reduce penetration is to increase the surface area (hence a hollowpoint). A bullet which passes completely through the target doesn't distribute much destructive energy and is only effective if it happens to directly strike a critical structure, whereas a bullet which displaces more tissue will disrupt a larger area (what some call the 'temporary cavity').

So I email Ruger's customer service...

To be fair... the SR-9 does have one of the more difficult to rack slides I have felt, especially on a full-size pistol... especially because there isn't much room to grip it. This is why I am suggesting it might not be the right pistol for you, especially if it is intended for personal defense. -

If the method they described (which is a valid method), or the slingshot method for racking the slide do not work for you... it may be time to look at a different pistol, honestly. Ease of racking the slide is not a good reason to go messing with the recoil spring tension... that could detrimentally affect operation or reliability. -
Sometimes I think many social issues would be solved if humans had a natural predator. A little 'survival of the fittest' is good for any species. (I realize that sounds REALLY cold, but seriously, when we have people breeding who have no business being parent's, ya gotta wonder how much weaker they are making the gene-pool) Pretty much ANY solid food can be choked on, either accidentally or through ignorance/stupidity/etc... what's the solution? Allow the FDA regulate how large a bite you can take, or how many times you are required to chew before swallowing?

This is exactly why I do not participate in company 401k or Pension... I manage my own investments, and the liquid goes offshore. They can go pound sand.

Will be looking forward to a range report on that one.

Sounds like a float issue to me, as well.

What did we really expect from a Chicago Democrat? Doesn't surprise me a bit... but, I will be surprised if any consequences are pursued.

Having owned an FNP-45, and fired several USP-45s, I can tell you that the FNP is at least as accurate (I think slightly more-so), better ergonomics, better trigger and better recoil characteristics. However... neither one can compare to a 1911 in any of those aspects. The only advantage either one has is greater magazine capacity and a DA/SA trigger. So, unless you just really want either one, I'd stick with the 1911 if it's just to shoot...

The only one I've ever seen in person, for sale, was priced at $699 (this was at a gun-shop), but that may have been new. Either way, $700 is definetly on the high end of the scale, especially for a private sale... $600 would probably be more reasonable.

Pulled my weapon for the first time.Opinions?
molonlabetn replied to Jack's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
You're welcome to your opinion, of course... but it's worth considering in this case, at least, that there was an immediate possibility that the occupants meant them such harm; and from the way I read it, that fear certainly existed. And limiting yourself to only responding when impending death is certain really limits you from protecting yourself or your family from 'just' rape, 'just' robbery, 'just' having your house broken in to, or 'just' being assulted with a vehicle... unless you are willing to accept the fact that any of these or other violent, invasive confrontations with unpredictable people would be worth actively stopping forcefully because they may lead to very permanent harm (even if not death). -
I'm still working on the tattoo...

If you didn't actually point your weapon at anyone, then I don't see what the fuss is about... But, you would not have been justified in aiming or firing at the truck, unless further evidence was displayed that they intended you harm. It was still very prudent to make your sidearm more accessible and take a defensive position, in the event that the truck driver wasn't simply drunk and lost control.
