  1. Just like the old timers, we like to use old worn out tools and give them a new life. We took a single bit ax that broomshead left us that was beyond its useful life, threw it in the forge, did some cutting, straightening, sharpening and drawing, and ended up with a heavy short ax/hatchet. I use it to throw, and with that much heft behind it, it sinks very deep, and throws well. It also still chops well for a small camp ax, and has a good, useable hammer pole. It has almost a bearded viking ax look, thanks to the art work of broomshead. I think it would make an approiate battle ax to go with my viking beard and pissy demeanor. Let us know what you think
  2. Y ans everyone is welcome to comeWe will have another forge day when it cools off and life on the farm is not so busy. Any and everyone is welcome to come use the forge and try their hand at making a blade.
  3. A charcoal fire with an air source will work. We use coal, and you can also build a propane forge. As was already mentioned, you need a min. Of 1500 degrees sustainable. Our forge with good coal will put out 3000 degrees, you need 2800 degrees for forge welding. There are some very easy to make forges using charcoal fuel, a brake drum forge, and a hair dryer air source online. Be warned while railroad spikes are fun for tinkering, they arent high carbon enough for tools or blades.
  4. Im a huge fan. Id love to build me one like that.
  5. Amen to that Dave.
  6. I guess I got blessed with good "beard genes" Ive been able to grow a full beard since I was sixteen. And Dave sometimes you just gotta man up. I have heard a lot of people make that complaint though.
  7. He'll visit the gas chamber but he wont get oc'ed. Unless he goes into PMO, some of the higher levels of Mcmap, or some kinda secrurity forces. But it got you test dummy so its all good lol.
  8. Ive had one since I got out of the USMC in Jan. I trimmed it once but I really like the big full beard. The hair on the other hand, I shave my head about every two weeks. Im actually overdue. It'll be three weeks friday on the hair.
  9. Whats he enlising into? I went to the gas chamber in boot, but it was 2.5 years before I got OC sprayed and that was for an auxiullary secruity detail. Glad you found a sucker though, if its anywhere near as bad as OC hes gonna be hurting all night.
  10. Does anybdoy else hear mantain any kinda facial hair? Seems like most guys would rather hack it off then deal with growing, trimming and washing a beard. If you grow anything post up. Heres mine, full beard heading towards a big viking beard. I use bluebeard beard wash to clean it, and a 50/50 mix of beeswax and vaseline to wax it and keep it soft and keep it in place.
  11. I was cleaning my 1851 Navy tonight, and I pulled a good one. I cocked it to half cock with the grips removed and broke the main spring. Crap.... so anyways, is there a good place to get one? Dixie gun works carries them, but they have mixed reviews a lot of them mention it being anywhere from slightly shorter but workable, up to some that don't work at all due to being to short. So should I take the gamble, and buy it from them, or is there somewhere else to order it from?
  12. So your gonna sell it to me right? At least hurry up and post pics.
  13. Peejman its basically a big camp fire cooking fork. We call 'em squirrel forks cause they are perfect for roasting a squirrel on, but they work for turning meat, roasting, etc. That one is 16" from the curve in the handle to the tines. Caster i get what your saying but cant picture them. Can you make a drawing or something and guess at the size of the metal diameter
  14. Thats purty. I like my ASM 1858 but I do wish it was stainless for the ease of cleanup
  15. So me and my old man invited some guys up for a class/hammer in, and we made some stuff for camping and primitive living. Once again, everything is made with hand tools. Everything we made laid out together wall hooks, railroad spike throwing hawk (didn't upset the steel and busted when we drifted the handle hole, got some ideas to improve) squirrel/camp fork, fire steel, railroad spike utility knife Skull pommeled railroad spike utility knife made by sbroomheadsr and broomhead with advice from Dad and me. Wall hooks for hanging any and everything Top by sbroomheadsr, middle one by my dad, and bottom by broomhead Throwing 'Hawk Knife and strike a light steel Squirrel fork
  16. Beautiful gun. I got my eye on a couple different ubertis

    Prayers requested

Pat my prayers are with you and your family. I know how tough losing someone so close can be. If you need anything give me a call
  18. I'm glad you enjoyed the visit, and Dad was extremly happy to share some knowledge and meet some good people. I'm gonna start planning a fall event very soon to give everyone time to plan.
  19. Thank you guys for coming out. I cant believe we split the eye on that hawk, but such is life. Next time we will upset the steel into a 3/4" - 1" egg shape so we have a bigger area to pull the eye from. Im glad you guys had fun, the knife turned out great. That hammer will sure out the blister on until your used to it. Ive done enough I dont blister up anymore but my forearms will be sore from that 4 lb shop hammer on that hawk head lol. We will get together again soon.
  20. Pretty good. Broomhead nad his da were the only two. They made a knife together, and me and my old man made a squirell fork, fire striker, and a throwing hawk. Pics to come
  21. The said day was today lol. Sorry ya missed it, itll come around again
  22. I forgot the second pad thing. I use the second pad naturally all the time now, and yes it does help. I have smaller sized hands.
  23. Follow through baby. Slow steady squeeze to the rear, when the shot bteaks keep the trigger pulled and sights on the target, then just as slowly release the trigger till you get the chunk of it resetting. I was a range coach for the USMC in Okinawa, and spent a lot of time working on my trigger control. Once you can do it perfect 100% of the time slow as molasses, start bumping up the speed.
  24. I guess I'm a lil old school Sharps 1874 "Quigely" in .45-110
  25. I talked to my old man tonight. Hes thinking october time frame to give it time to cool off. Thanks for all the intrest guys Ill keep ya posted.
