  1. Taken from the posted article ... "Residents would have 60 days after the law takes effect to remove, sell or transfer such magazines from city limits in compliance with state law, or surrender them to the LAPD. The law would take effect 30 days after Mayor Eric Garcetti signs it, a move that he was “eager” to make, he said in a statement."
  2. The XS Big Dot is well worth consideration for a defensive handgun especially for aging eyes. Mr. Tncobra's well stated experience matches mine.
  3. Here's a link to a high definition photo of the cockpit. Click the 360* 3D link below the photo for the high def surround view ... http://sploid.gizmodo.com/the-cockpit-of-the-sr-71-blackbird-is-still-a-futuristi-1659105208
  4. Sad thing about the custom leather holsters is today's prices! It wasn't that many years ago that (for example) a custom fit Kramer horsehide was $98. Just like firearms, another example of the melting dollar. : (
  5. I'll second the Kramer horsehide holsters! My experience is with their Michigan State Police paddle holster. The few weeks wait time is worth it.
  6.   The M1 will be purchased at the CMP South Store rather than an FFL dealer.    But, it can't hurt to call some Anniston gun shops to see if they can and are willing process the hunting shotgun.    Thanks for the suggestions all.
  7. That is such a fundamental truth regarding photography. So many folks see an outstanding photograph and immediately ask what camera was used? : /
  8. Thanks for the input. While we're in Anniston, I will call a local shop or two to inquire. Doesn't hurt; I might get a pleasant surprise.
  9. Should be simple but ... I am meeting a Louisiana friend in Anniston, Alabama.  He will be purchasing his first M1 Garand at the Civilian Marksmanship Program - South Store and he is topping trees!   But, he is also buying a 20 gauge semi-auto hunting shotgun from me. It is my understanding that Federal Law will require me to ship the shotgun to an FFL dealer in Louisiana in order for him to take legal possession. : ( Wouldn't it be nice if Federal Law allowed us to walk into an FFL dealer in Anniston, present I.D.s and do the transfer? Please chime in if I am mis-interpreting the legal requirement of this friend to friend out of state shotgun sale. Thanks.
  10. Very nice! Thanks for this excellent write up. How do the FEG triggers compare to the Browning Hi Powers? Do they also have the "magazine safety" gizmo?
  11. I first experienced the 938 with Sig's wooden grips and it did sting a bit in my hands. For a pocket pistol I prefer wood since it is less likely to hang up on material when drawn. So I kept the grip unchanged for some time. I later ordered the Sig palm swell rubber grips and voila! No sting! In Docker type pockets from a Galco leather pocket holster I have noted no tendency for the rubber grip to "hang up" on the material. On jeans pockets, I have noticed the draw is more of a compromise with the rubber grips. BUT, there is absolutely no range practice fatigue for me with the rubber grips. YMMV.
  12. The lock is so firm on these I can't see it getting accidentally released when used with a good pocket holster. Plus, the trigger pull is relatively heavy as well. Perhaps the main concern for many will be remembering to release the safety during the stress of a sudden self defense situation. It is such a soft shooting .380 especially compared to the older blowback types (ex. Walther PPk & Sig 232)
  13. Just personal preference, but the carbon slide 228s feel much more balanced to me than the stainless steel slided 229s.

    1945 M1 garand

"If you go the CMP route, you'll have better luck of getting a WWII rifle if you opt for a Field Grade.  Most of the Service Grades or higher nowadays are post-war."   The nice thing about the CMP as a source is that they have Garand examples that appeal to shooters, Garands that appeal to history buff collectors, and all manner of folks in between those two extremes. For example, you can find "Specials" with new Centurian .308 or 30:06 barrels built on WW2 receivers. You can even go to their auction site and bid against the "big boys" on the occasional museum quality all original WW2 Garand.     The thing I miss most about the "pre-Newtown" days of the CMP is the full racks of all grades of  Garands. A trip to the South Store is still fun but the selection can be very piecemeal. But, they still have pallets of unopened crates from the Army. Who knows what treasures still reside in those!  : )
  15. "On the whole half cock issue, I can only get mine to go into half cock if I'm riding the hammer forward, while trying to engage the safety. I can't get it to stay in half cock through "normal" handling. The gun also has a pretty heavy trigger pull (mine measures tight at 8 pounds) for a SA weapon, so it isn't going off unless you want it to. I also always use a holster, and don't carry anything else in the pocket that I'm using to carry."   My experience also. I would not recommend the 938 to a (for example) neophyte non-zealous firearm owner. But, it fills a nice and safe carry niche for the "involved" single action enthusiast.

    1945 M1 garand

This link will give you the price points on the CMP's various Garand price points. One "sweet spot" is the Service Grade at $730. Taxed if bought at the store. Just a discounted overnight FedEx to your doorstep if ordered. http://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/rifle_sales/m1-garand/ Below is where some of the nicest Garand guys reside; they will gladly answer any questions you might have. The store inventories vary daily nowadays and many report getting some superb Garand's via mail order. http://forums.thecmp.org Even filling the "club" requirement is a snap nowadays since a year's subscription (via the CMP) to the Garrand Collectors Club qualifies! : )
  17. "Try one, you won't be disappointed." Yep! As long as one is accustomed to single action, it is a joy! The standard equipment night sights are standard size and provide a nice index even when rapidly "quasi point shooting".
  18. Very welcome albeit "late to the party" news. The excellent Sig 938 already got my $ for this nitch but there will be plenty of folks drawn to this offering!
  19. You might want to post this on the Smith & Wesson Forum ... (good knowledge base there and helpful folks) ... http://smith-wessonforum.com
  20. Sometimes these various AR and ammo scares are likely used as a little extra "wife leverage" ... "Hon, I had to go ahead and stockup 'cuz it might not be on the market for much longer. It'll be a great investment."
  21. I hope folks follow your link. Very nice images! Just a 10 month bug? Very impressive!
  22. Your son must be in the same boat as myself and numerous others. When getting examined for glasses does he fail the Depth Perception portion of the exam. If so, his World to him looks like a two dimensional photograph rather than three dimensional. It is a bummer that affects many things other than just shooting. I hope the above is not the case, but if you are born that way "it is what it is". My advice would be close or patch the dominant eye for rifle shooting. Pistol is likely not an issue. But, just don't let him fall in love with shotgun hunting (ducks or upland) that is pretty much a loosing proposition in my experience.
  23. Bump ... gotta keep this fun thread alive! "Spirit of Tennessee" Snaps
  24. Another vote for the Prismatic as one to also try. The circle plus cross hair is a bit of a busy look but it was easily adjusted to.
  25. The two ducks is special! The perspective of getting at the same level as the subject often yields a fine shot. Very nice.
