  1. Isn't that the truth! Apple's iPhone 6 has a superb auto white balance sensor that blows away many recent "real" cameras. Hoping this thread blossoms; some nice shots already posted!
  2. Thanks for starting this thread; some riveting stuff in here. Sometimes a bit of thread drift is a good thing! : ) It's amazing how the Internet is fleshing out folks' knowledge of their families in that era. My GG father, gravitated from New Hampshire to Arkansas to farm and in less than a year joined a Calvary division of the Army of Arkansas. We knew he had served as a Hospital Steward and my paternal grandmother (1868 - 1960) had his saw bones kit. BUT, thanks to the web, I now have a microfiche copy of his ferry crossings and horse feed expenses (under his signature) for when he was charged with the task of apprehending deserters back in Arkansas. An odd task for a Hospital Steward used to doing limb amputations. I'll also vote for your reading "Company Aytch" by Sam Watkins. A CLASSIC! PS - (My family kind of skipped a generation by having kids late in life. G Mother born 1868 had my Dad in 1906. He had me in 1946. So luckily I new my paternal grandmother as a child. You could not mention Abraham Lincoln in her presence!)
  3. Belatedly caught your video. From German occupied Belgium to the beautiful countryside of East Tennessee. Every time you handle the patina of that beauty I'm sure you wonder about its travels over the years. Thanks for the video.
  4. There's your answer! A nice S&W prelock or a Government style 1911 would be right at home with those long guns! ... or the High Power as mentioned earlier. M1 Garand! Yes indeed! Two thumbs up! : )
  5. Very nice! A real keeper! You did the most important first 2 steps in taking a fine photo: (1) Be there (2) "seeing the photo" in your mind's eye ... oh, and you had a camera : )
  6. WW2 documentaries must have triggered a lot more recognitions over the years than had ever dawned on me. I also posted this news link on the CMP site and one fellow shared this ... "twenty years ago while watching a documentary on Okinawa my father scared me when he loudly said'''''Hey that's Moe Myers my squad leader.""" Before my dad arrived as a replacement, after the battle, he knew his squad leader had helped evacuate some natives after a battle. The footage was him carrying a child down a road only a few seconds."
  7. This recent news story out of New Orleans might give you a goose bump or two! http://www.wwltv.com/story/news/local/orleans/2015/02/04/world-war-two-battle-of-the-bulge-film-maker-ken-burns/22886749/
  8. Yes. His personal journal focuses on his day to day personal experiences as opposed to big events outside his day to day sphere. Even his entry about the notice of his brother being killed in Germany doesn't reveal his anguish; he only stated the score he wanted to now settle. Oh, by the way, in the photographs he can be identified by generally wearing his cap bill pulled up and he looks more like 15 years old than the 18 years when he enlisted. His civilian skills of military airplane assembly would have earned him a military deferment but he elected to serve his country in uniform!
  9. Jim Mohney, was a flight engineer on a B-24 in the Pacific. He also served as a gunner at times. He flew 36 combat missions. His granddaughters' husband visited with him a few weekends ago and recorded a few hours of his stories from his time in the AAF. Here is the link to Jim's wartime timeline. This was compiled from a journal Jim kept during his stint in the Pacific. (It may not start at the beginning but you can navigate back to the beginning) ... http://cdn.knightlab.com/libs/timeli...t=7&height=650 Here is the link to the photo album of his color photos: https://plus.google.com/photos/11805...00744655078817 It is an honor to relive these stories of a member of the greatest generation. He lost a brother in the European Theatre and dedicated his efforts in the Pacific to his brother. His 90th birthday celebration will be in about a week and a half. I hope his timeline journal entry's work for you folks. You will be reading mundane entry's then suddenly hit one filled with drama such as his pilot being shot down (another plane) and narrowly escaping Japanese capture.
  10. Yes, these terrorists are unimaginable vermin. And Free Speech should be unasailable. I just feel utter frustration with these "cartoonists" that use the concept of Free Speech and express it in "cartoons" that have been catalysts that have predictably triggered extremist harm on folks just trying to go about their life. I go round and round wrestling with my own conflict of, of course, protecting Free Speech yet viewing these recent extreme outcomes and get sickened. Obviously the core culprits are the violent extremist heathen's mowing people down. There is no questioning that.
  11. These "cartoonists" need to just associate amongst each other and not mingle with innocent humanity that becomes collateral damage from their exercising their "free speech". Free speech is something to be cherished rather than something to bring mayhem onto innocent bystanders. There is a big difference.
  12. If you run across a Beretta Compact 9 check it out. Shorter barrel like the Centurian models and has shorter 13 round mags. But, with Xtrema grip extenders slipped over standard 15 rounders it works well and looks finished not rigged. Add a Beretta D trigger spring for double action smoothness; the single action trigger is crisp already. It comes with the dot over dot style sights (My pref) rather than the usual Beretta 3 dot sights! I prefer the earlier Italian versions rather than the U.S. version that has War & Peace warnings scribbled all over the pistol.
  13. Owl Hollow will still fill a very nice nitch as a nice relaxing range with opportunities to shot at 100 yards and less distances. Newer shooters might find it a somewhat less intimidating atmosphere. Strategic Edge is an excellent facility with a somewhat different atmosphere and manner of operating. Its two rifle ranges lean strongly towards longer range shooting. It might appeal more to intermediate and above level shooters. Of course they have training for and encourage new shooters. We're fortunate that mid state shooters have both style ranges at hand!
  14. If you manage to also locate a Sabre upper you will likely be very pleased. Their barrels are particularly acclaimed for their accuracy and quality. I wonder if the online outlets PKFirearms and Rainier might still have some in stock? It is a real shame that their ownership managed to get the company grounded.
  15. Another excellent option for low recoil and even smaller size is the Sig 238 .380. It is the softest shooting small .380 I have ever experienced. It is a non-blowback locked breech action.
  16. Good point! I received my premium request today from Lockton (NRA). Between now and the Due Date, I will get my "ducks in line" based upon this thread's input. Then I will hopefully get something in writing from Lockton that I have in order whatever they might require in the event of any future claim. If not, I might reconsider renewal. It was a thread (different forum) about "foot dragging" on a claim that sparked my thoughts about this issue. ps - After replying to DWARREN123, my profile line shows "Airborne". Not the case. It is a glitch. That honor belongs to DWARREN123.
  17. Thank you Midtennchip! I do need to revisit my photo records ( not just firearms). I will read over those links also. Much appreciated.
  18. Does anyone here have knowledge or experience with filing a firearm loss claim using the NRA insurance as managed by Lockton Affinity based in Kansas City? What proof of ownership is needed when filing? I don't have a claim thankfully but was wondering about any first hand experiences from a claimant's perspective. I have a firearm or three where I do not possess a receipt. Don't know if that is a potential roadblock if I ever do have a loss. Any comments are appreciated. Djay3
  19. On top of the absurd price, it has Beretta's War & Peace cover our arse warnings embossed all over it. : /
  20. I am soon to be listing an As New in Box Franchi 20 gauge semi auto Model 620 VS (Brescia, Italy) imported by Benelli USA. It has several chokes and also fitting shims. The barrel is 28". I bought it several years ago but it is unfired. The wood grain is beautiful. You might wish to Google it for reviews and photos to get more specifics. I hope to get some photos made soon. I have yet to list it, so feel free to PM me if you develop any interest. It will be $550. I probably won't list it for another 2 to 3 days. Good luck!
  21. This real life example is related to the idea of "racking a shotgun to scare an intruder". An in-law was entering one of his low rent vacated rental properties. He thought he heard a sound that he suspected might be an intruder inside the property. He went back to his vehicle to retrieve a revolver. As he came through the front door he purposely cocked the revolvers' hammer "hoping it would be heard by any possible intruder"! Then he immediately accidentally touched off a round just inside the doorway! He recently purchased a small Ruger .380. He is carrying it on his person daily but has yet to clean, lube, and has never test fired the pistol!!! ... When I have protested and preached about this folly he just shrugs it off. SOME FOLKS DO NOT HAVE ANY COMMON SENSE! This level of firearm ignorance combined with hard headedness is an lethal event waiting to happen.

    Kahr CW9

I'll second that! Some folks don't care for the long albeit smooth double action trigger. Personally, I like having an extra millisecond pull time i.e. "decision time" on the trigger if under stress. My experience is with the early all steel K9 and MK9.
  23. Unfortunately, the husband gave her the "concealment type purse" as a Christmas gift this year.

    AR lengths?

You might get some answers from this article ... www.gunsamerica.com/blog/personality-quirks-300-aac-blackout The subsonic nature of the round appears to dictate the best gas system length plus extra barrel length may not provide much better ballistics. But, there are a number of well versed sources. You might try posting your question in the M4carbine.com and AR15.com forums.
