    Snakes

It is not illegal to kill a native snake IF not taken from the wild. You can not possess, harm, kill a native snake that is taken from the wild. If the OP had killed those snakes, it would not be illegal. Mot saying he should have, just that it wouldn't be illegal.   All snakes have free roam of my property, except venomous snakes. They will lose their head.   Now the idiot killing hawks on the other hand should be reported.
  2.   Exactly what I thought when I heard of the plan to build. Last time I checked, a major metropolitan downtown is not exactly conducive to fishing, shooting, etc.   Add to it the hotel whose LOWEST rate is $295 a night and you have a recipe for an empty Pyramid yet again in short order.   The city of Memphis invested huge money into this place for what purpose?  I would love to hear the thoughts of the people who made this decision.   All I see is another Bass Pro store (and thy ain't that great to begin with) except this one is in a ridiculous location.
  3. Couple of things.....   Buy as big as you can afford. What you think will work (and for $1K it's probably pretty small), will likely be outgrown in short order.   Do NOT even think about buying a Cannon. Their customer service is abysmal at best and non existent at worst. Literally told the head of CS to F himself after many attempts on my part to be accommodating.
  4. If the county is dry, how are they getting around that? You are paying for the booze via the $10 fee, same as you would be paying in a store/bar.   Are they saying the free tour is somehow different than the $10 tour other than the booze?
  5. That $200 handgun is a great deal, until it fails when needed the most. Just sayin'
  6. You had a 30S for 8 or 9 years? Interesting since they have only been made for about 2 yrs. :squint:
  7.   26 isn't exactly a small gun in 9mm. More like a brick in 9mm.   30S hands down. Had plenty of Glocks, and the only 2 I have left is a 30S and a Gen 4 19.
  8. A) It's been polished, like you said. S&W stainless is a duller finish.   B) A 66-2 is NOT collectable, not by a long shot   C) Shoot it and enjoy it.   The ONLY S&W I own that I won't shoot (and I own many) is a late 1956- early 1957 Pre-28 that is unfired except by the factory. In late 1957, they started putting the model number on them.
  9. And therein lies the problem. Do not "trickle" the faucets. Set them to a slow flow or a very fast drip. I would much rather leave a fast drip/slow flow on for days on end and pay the water bill, than leave them to "trickle", which is way to slow and allows the freezing temps to catch up. Also leave ANY cold water line that is in an outside wall, or comes under the house set that way. Faucets, showers, tubs, whatever. Again, rather pay the water bill than to have to fix pipes. I am not trying to berate anyone in any way, just offering tips for next time.
  10.   Long story short......... Kimber and others use Marvel's original design of which he no longer has rights to and it is mass produced. Bob Marvel was screwed out of his own design many years ago. He and Nelson got together, talked about the conversion, redesigned it together and are now producing an updated version of the original on machinery that cost big bucks. New version is much more accurate and much better built.
  11. I got one of Larry's conversions last summer, specifically to use with a Dan Wesson CCO. When I tried it out, it would not cycle for sh!t. Called Larry and he explained some steps to improve it. Tried all of them and still no go. Wound up sending it back along with the pistol in order to figure out why. I had predicted it was because DW is well known for making all their own parts and making them slightly oversized. Wound up being the disconnector being too tight for the lightweight conversion to work the slide and the ejector being oversized.   Worked on it, got it running,, did a trigger job, function tested with both .45 & .22 and sent it back to me in about 2 weeks. Runs flawlessly. I would recommend Larry's conversion in a heart beat.
  12. If you want to go pretty romantic and not hugely expensive (more than the chains, etc. though), the Buckhorn Inn is superb. Outstanding food, great service, beautiful views. They have one service each night. Check out the menu.....http://www.buckhorninn.com/about-the-inn/   Reservations are required
  13.   Yeah, but if you throw out the sh!thole they call Memphis and the uber liberal Nashville and vicinity, percentage goes way down. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone in my area that voted for that POS
  14.     Corryton looked OK on City-Data until I got to the part where 34% of Corryton residents voted for that POS Obama in 2012 & 37.7% in 2008.   WTF?
  15. Kind of what I figured, County OK, city no go.   Really looking around Lake Norris region and also Gatlinburg region. I currently have a range in my yard, so I am not going anywhere I can't do the same.
  16. Thinking about moving from SW TN to East TN and wanted to know if Knoxville has regulations against shooting on my property? (say 3+ acres).
  17.   HR 218 does not automatically cover a retired LEO.   In fact, the law is VERY hard to actually use by the vast majority of retirees. A person must either qualify each year thru his former dept or find an instructor who is authorized to give the requal. The big problem is that because the Feds did not specify exactly who or how the requal is to be done, MANY dept's refuse to issue their former employees the course and even NYS Troopers have told their retirees to F-off. So yes, an officer would be covered if he can get re-qualified every year. Here in TN, it is very hard to do and I finally found out who is giving the course in SW TN, and he is the only one doing it.
  18.   He will get no money in the law suit. About all he will get is a judge who orders a re-instatement of his permit.   As for the leaving that crappy state, I did just that after I retired.               I am actually extremely puzzled and very disappointed to see these comments. None of you know anything about the man, yet you are all quite willing to see him as the devil. Why?   Let's go over a few laws in NYS, shall we?   When an LEO retires in NYS, his right to carry is IMMEDIATELY terminated and he becomes a "regular" citizen. Unless said LEO has a NYS pistol permit, he must surrender his handguns to whatever jurisdiction he resides in. (Or if his spouse has a permit, he can transfer them to her permit).   There are quite a few very large counties that will NOT issue carry permits in NYS. They issue "Premises" or "Target & Hunting" permits (which BTW are not in the law books) and have done so for ions because no one has the funds to fight it in court. It has been attempted, but is still an ongoing battle. It appears that the former officer did in fact live in a county who issues full carry permits.   Many LEO departments will not allow their officers to even obtain a personal permit while employed by them. There have been challenges to that rule and some have been changed (ask me how I know :pleased: )   So a retired officer who does not hold a personal permit must fight for his permit just as any other NYS citizen does, with "favors" rarely given in the process.   The fact that some of you think every single LEO whether working or retired is out to take your rights away is absolutely asinine and it shows total disrespect. In many instances, the LEO is every bit of a 2A supporter as many here are, but with your blinders on, you do not see that.   That POS Coumo made up the "SAFE" act and passed it in the middle of the night without going through the proper channels just as Obama uses his pen to sign "executive power" laws. It is then up to the people to overturn such a law which is no easy task. Hell, when Cuomo made up his new law, he put in place a 7 round capacity limit on magazines. Too bad very few 7 rd mags exist other than 1911's, etc. The law also immediately made all officers that carry more than 7 rd's criminals. Once that was brought to Coumo's attention, he said "that wasn't my intention and not what I meant". He then altered the law with another swipe of his "executive power" pen   Not all LEO's past or present are evil and if some people would open their eyes and ears, maybe that could change. One should not judge if one does not know.   Carry on.........
  19.   Exactly why Constitutional carry is not a be all, end all. You would still need a permit to carry in other states, and many states don't issue non-resident permits, so you would still need a home state permit.

    privacy plants

Fast growing visual blocker? Crepe Myrtle.   Stuff grows like a weed. Can be planted a foot apart and will grow 20ft tall and be so thick you can't walk through it. Think about how many people you see cut it down to a couple ft tall in the fall and how high it is by summer.

    1911 low down

Wait. You specifically said you won't buy a Springfield, yet you are buying a Springfield. Did I miss something?

    1911 low down

OK, so taking away Springfield, taking your budget, your want of a Commander size 1911, and made in the USA, the choice very easily goes to Dan Wesson. Either CCO which is a 4.25" barrel and an officer size frame (I have one and it is a superb carry weapon) or a Guardian, which is the 4.25" barrel on a full size frame with a bobtail cut for carrying.   The basic difference is does your hand fit a full size or officer size grip better?   DW uses no MIM parts (all other brands you mentioned do) and all parts are built on site. All the other brands also use foreign parts.   DW customer service is absolutely spot on too. Heck, the companies VP hangs out on the 1911 forums and is truly out to please his customers. I had sent Keith a PM with a question I had. I instantly got a PM back asking for my phone number, and as soon as I sent it, my phone rang and we had a lengthy conversation. Ya' think Colt or Ruger's VP would do that?   Finally, as there seems to always be someone who say's "brand A is better built than DW" , ask them if they have ever compared both side by side, and fired both, side by side. There is no one here or on any forum that can tell me they are the same or brand A is better, as the facts simply don't support it.   Didn't look to see where you are located, but if you are in SW TN, you are more than welcome to handle and shoot my DW.   eta: forgot to address your question of will the 4.25 vs 5" barrel be an issue. Absolutely will NOT in a self defense situation. Out to 25 yards, you likely will notice zero difference. Personally, I shoot a commander sized  1911 way better than a full size as I have thousands of rounds downrange using that platform.

    1911 low down

You failed to mention budget, which leaves the field wide open.   You say you want best bang for the buck, and to me, there is only one answer...... Dan Wesson.   I have been carrying a 1911 for many years, and have gone through numerous brands. For quite some time, that brand was Kimber. Problem is that my Kimber was one of the first Ultra CDP produced, and while I still have and still love my Kimber, I would not take a current model if you gave me one.   I currently own Wilson's and DW, Springfield also. When I say that Dan Wesson absolutely destroys any other mid range 1911 produced today, I truly believe that. There is a night and day difference between DW vs Colt, Ruger, S&W, etc. DW is also made in the USA   You say you don't want a Springfield, but it is a fine weapon and made in the USA.   Comes down to two choices at different price points in my opinion......... Low end is easily Springfield (Range Officer) and mid range is Dan Wesson.
  24. I think many here are overthinking this.   Status? Hardly Quality? Absolutely Reliability? Absolutely And so on....................   The simple fact is this. I KNOW my Wilson is going to go bang everytime I squeeze the trigger (barring ammo malfunction). I KNOW if something should go wrong with my Wilson, they will fix it on their dime, period.I KNOW I can trust my life to my Wilson.   Will other guns go bang? Sure, but would you stake your life on it?
