  1. Anybody got a set of dies and a little brass for the 300 WM? I got lots of trading fodder or I am willing to buy some. glockshooter@comcast.net
  2. Anybody trying 2460 in the 308? I have a pound and I am going to test it...I also have some 223 and 2520...I normally just use 760/H414, 4895 or 4064 but I won't to do these on the Dillon 550 and I want a ball powder slower than 760. I have 748 but I want to save that for the 223's and use up some of these others.
  3. I will try the bearing idea....I guess great minds think alike....I did cut a small piece of spring from another spring I had, not a AK spring, and put it behind it.....seems to be working. Need to take it out and shoot it a bunch but I am going to wait till I get a new spring first.
  4. Yep, been online and I am not the only one with a Bulgarian kit on a SPUD reciever that has has this problem....their consensus is the ejector is short...I know mine has a lot of room....I guess I need to start there.
  5. I have a Bulgarian AKM/AK74 5.45x39 and it is giving me extraction problem. I am using Russian military ammo, the 53 FMJ's. It will eject fine and then it throws one under the cover or just leaves it on top of the mag..... It makes good ejector contact so I can only assume that the extractor is not getting the rim good. I have cleaned the extractor btw and it looks good. You can snap it over a rim without too much force. I am thinking maybe a weak bolt spring...not closing the bolt strongly enough...
  6. What you will get from the CMP for the 5-600 range will not come close to some that you can get local for about 700 or so. Rack grade Garands can have barrels that gauge over 5......there are several guys at the shows that have gauge sets and I have seen guns with good parts and good barrels go for just a little more. In other words....you may get a better gun if you buy local from someone that fixes them up a little,
  7. Keep your eyes open for a Ohaus/RCBS 10/10 or 304 scale. I have used a 10/10 since about 1984 and I think it is the best scale out there. I agree all the RCBS/Ohaus scales are good, I like Lee products but I would use the dippers before I fooled with one of those dang scales again. On another note, if you do a lot of handgun loading on a single stage and you can stand doing it that way......pick up a RCBS Little Dandy with the appropriate rotors. I used to have one with a lot of rotors until I made the mistake of loaning to a nephew, I have never saw it again. Wish I had it back, it worked well.
  8. Better get it soon, it is going up. I have 2 set back.
  9. Awesome....I have picked up a 4" and a 6" SS Security Six recently but Redhawks in other than 44 mag are becoming a Ho;y Grail.
  10. If you have a Lee Factory Crimp die in 40SW and/or 45ACP I have a little bulge fix trick. The carbide ring in these dies are for factory outside diameter dimensions. I take the crimper out of the die leaving it hollow all the way thru, I use a bullet punch from a Lee bullet sizer kit as a ram and I can push the case all the way thru the FCD die. This sizes the case all the way including the rim. I have not tried this with the 9mm because the case is slightly tapered. Basically a Lee bulge buster kit. As to using cast bullets in a Glock factory barrel, I have tried it. I have found soft bullets shot slower works better that hard bullets shot faster. Most leading comes from gas cutting, which is gas flowing around the bullet because it is either too small for the bore or is too hard to swell and fill the bore. I made a load for my Glock 19 using the lee tumble lube bullet using 4.2 grains of 231. It was kinda fun as the cases would fall at my feet but they functioned reliably.
  11. Savage is notorious for producing inexpensive rifles that shoot way, way better than they are supposed to. There are reasons for this. One is that the barrel, bolt and action are all rounds which makes it extremely easy to keep everything centered. Another is that they use an action nut to set headspace which means they can screw the barrel into the action to an exact headspace and then lock it down with the barrel nut. They use to straighten barrels manually but I don't know if they still do that. As to the 308 round, it is an easy cartridge to reload. Lots of good bullets and brass, is not finicky and a short fat powder column is just a little more inherently accurate than some of the longer cases. Also since the 308 is a newer cartridge most makers load it up to max pressure where they load the 3006 down because of so many older rifles out there. The 308 can match the 06 with bullets up to 150 grains.
  12. I was kidding.....just having a little late night fun.
  13. I had a kaboom with a Glock 22. Didn't hurt the gun but destroyed the mag. It was with cheap Amerc range ammo. It was definitely the ammo's fault, Do some research on Amerc and it is absolute crap. I had a bunch of Amerc 45 brass and I could not get a decent reload from it. Lots of malfunctions. I now toss all Amerc brass in all calibers when it crosses my path. It blew out in the web btw on the 40sw. As to load data, I use a chronograph. I have found reloading manuals have lowered powder charges considerably over the years while keeping their book velocities up. In many cases I have found my velocities and pressures well below theirs with these supposed "Max" loads. I use a lot of WW 231/HP38 for 9mm for service loads. Works good. Power Pistol and Blue Dot for hot stuff.
  14. 12" at 300 yards???? what are you shooting a shotgun....LOL! I had a Savage 12BVSS that could put 5 168 grain SMK's into a 3-4 " group at 300 yards. Raise your expectations!
  15. I wouldn't worry about the 45acp rounds. As stated it is a low pressure round. Most Kabooms are with 40 sw's as the guns were really 9mm's that were made into 40's. One thing you can do in either caliber is use a Lee bulge buster to fully size the case down to the rim and keep loads in the sane range. You can also get a Lone Wolf or Storm Lake barrel which is fully supported in the head area and has cut rifling so you can shoot lead bullets.
  16. Just loaded and shot my first shot shells with the Lyman Easy Loader I got from Caster. I used Remington 2 3/4 green hulls, CCI 209's, 17 grains of Red Dot, Winchester AA12 wads and 1 oz of 8 shot. I really don't know what I am doing but it was fun, they went bang and I had no functioning problems, I even hit a couple of the clays....though I only used pump guns, an 870 and a 835. What I really want to learn to load is 00 Buck as I can cast those myself. Anybody got a recipe for that?
  17. Ya'll do understand I said 50 yards.....I chunked a few at a metal silhouette at 200 and hit it once. My barrel is a smooth bore too. I think a 100 yards is going to be the limit for the accuracy, my eyes with open sights and the energy of a 1 oz slug. Now you guys with the rifles barrels and a sabot loaded slug can get on out there.
  18. I have several shotguns but I don't shoot them much. I like rifles. So when 221 Fireball here put a 21" Remington slug barrel with sights up for sale I had to have it. I have shot a couple of groups at 60 yards even better and this one at 50. I was using Winchester 1 oz 1600fps slugs. This thing shoots dead on and groups awesome I even dings the 200 yard plate 1 out 3 at the range the other day....the 2 misses were real close. I am going to have to group it at 100 next time as that is about the max I would ever take a shot.
  19. The Henry is probably a little classier and might appeal more to the Cowboy action shooter but the Marlin is the better all around rifle in my opinion. I have several and I have a Marlin 44. I have had Marlin Cowboys in 45-70 and 357, I have the 1895 in 45-70 also. One thing I would suggest is if you want to shoot a lot of cast lead, try and find one without the Microgroove rifling. Some of them can shoot lead but the full rifled guns are a heck of a lot easier to work with. If you are going to stick with jacketed the Microgroove barrels are fine. I have seen a lot of the older guns go for $400 to $450 in standard configuration in 44 mag.
  20. Check out Drop Box...it is a free cloud storage for pc's and I think it is good for about 10 gigabytes. I use it for file storage.
  21. My brother just had 2 handguns stolen in east Nashville. One was a SW 3913TSW and the other a two tone Bersa Thunder. Problem is he never recorded the serial numbers. I had one in my collection in the past and I am digging through old records trying to find it for him but I can't be sure I can find the right one. Point is record those SN's, keep a copy off site, email them to yourself, etc.
  22. HA! I would love to go with your granny shopping.....I love to horse trade. She sounds like a HOOT! Grow a pair! Dickering is fun.
  23. I may try some reduced loads using 4895 and 150 grain bullets, I have that. What I have to get is a set of 300 WM dies and some brass....I probably only have a handful at best. I put the Hi/Lo rings back on it....I didn't have a set of steel or weaver bases for a 98. If I decide it is a keeper I have a set of Talleys with 1" and 30mm rings. We shall see.
