ORSA Secret City Challenge
Jamie Jackson replied to dlmeadows's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
Thank you my friend. I'll let Neil know right away. Looks forward to the match! :pleased: -
I received the below load data yesterday (while I was at work) from Ben Amonette at Alliant: "With American Select and a 147 gr lead bullet, I suggest starting with 2.9 grs and the max should be approx. 3.3 grs." I do accept that this is cautionary load data. I'll start low and work up and see how it goes. I've flattened a few primers and blow a few cases over the years...enough to have me not wanting to repeat it again...so easy does it. :pleased:

ORSA Secret City Challenge
Jamie Jackson replied to dlmeadows's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
OK...I know it's down to the wire...But didn't I read somewhere that there is still a couple of slots open and a few more days before it's closed? My Buddy Neil told me today that his schedule has opened and he'd like to shoot this match. Neil is an ORSA and IDPA Member...I can contact John and see if we can get him classified if he can still get in. Any help appreciated. -
Mass Shooting New Orleans
Jamie Jackson replied to Fourtyfive's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I worked there for 18 years. "This is an extremely unusual occurrence, and we're confident that we will make swift arrests," said Remi Braden, a police spokeswoman. I have to call BS on that statement. It's typical...so much so that it usually doesn't garner much, if any media attention. "swift arrests"...sure you will... razorback is right. But Boy...do I ever miss the food. :yum: -
What happens, medical condition with a CCW
Jamie Jackson replied to runco's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I'm an RN and work in an ER. I know there are a few Paramedics on board here as well. It's my understanding the firearms are turned over to peace officers that respond to the scene. I know when I underwent CONTOMS training (Tac-Med), searching for and securing a weapon on a downed officers was one of the first things we we do. You don't want a man that has just been shot or injured "waking up" with you hovering over them...Fight Mode was still on when they went down. From my experience: I've run across a few guns, and tons of knives on folks. I've always unloaded the handguns and secured them in the patients personal belongings bag, labeled it, and made sure a family member took control of it and documented the fact. I've had peace officers as patients, still armed, did the same...but have occasionally turned the firearm over to another officer that was present...who, if it wasn't needed for evidence, returned the firearm to the officer or their family. Knives? they are ubiquitous! Everybody seems to have one. If you are mentally/chemically impaired, unconscious, etc...bagged, documented, labeled the same as all of your personal possessions. If no family is present, the belongings (valuables) are itemized, sealed in a large envelop, and security will lock them in a safe, the receipt stays with the patient's chart until the patient is ready to retrieve them. I've run across many more firearms during the 18 years I worked in New Orleans, but still see them a few times a year here in TN. -
Really a good question. Prior to this madness: $20.00/1000 Tula/Wolf and $26.00/1000 Federal, or there and about. If you order by mail/internet then you have to consider the $27.00+ HazMat and shipping. Bulk purchases or group purchases have eased the pain. Or meet David at one of the gunshows he frequents and save the HazMat fees. It's hard to say what prices will be like when availability is steady again, but they will likely be more than they were. I think we can count on that. You can, with time and effort, still pick up powder and primers at pre-Newton/Obama phase 2 pricing. I know I have and others have as well. Good Luck to you.

backround check for black powder.....
Jamie Jackson replied to a topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
I miss America. It was a nice place to live before the Communists took over. -
Yep..and they'll keep doing it as long as people are willin' to pay the scalper pricing. We are our own worst enemies sometimes...

and yet another reason to cast and reload...if you can only gather up the components. LOL...but you can gather them, it just take a bit of patience and effort. And Good people like David.

It's been a few years, but I've shot a couple or three of those at Rangemaster. Excellent matches, imho. I'm a bit thick on all of this...but it looks like there aren't really any earth shattering changes as I see it. I plead ignorant if I'm missing something.

Good suggestion Caster. That I will do. I am anal about seating depth and OAL LOL. That's why I switched to digital calipers last year. I've used W231 and AA#2 and really watch the charge closely as they are such fine powders and use a small charge relative to velocity. I would assume N100 is even more of an issue. Thanks Raoul. I've seen Green Dot mentioned nearly every place I look for info on American Select. I realize powders will eventually be more readily available, but the clowns in Washington are through trying to stifle our abilities to pursue our shooting...so I'm trying my best to provide myself with viable options. Green Dot, 700X, and WSF are on my "locate" list as well. I have Unique and W231 backordered...but you know how that goes. Thanks again guys.

Thank you Caster. I guess I fell to normalcy basis and thought Unique would always be available LOL. It'll do me good to learn some different powders. Having used Unique with great results for over 25 years I simply never got around to doing so. I'm keeping an eye out for the new formula AA nitro 100, as I've seen you post about having good results with it in your reloading. And Yeah, I really like the easy "rolling" feel to the lead 147grainers out of my Glocks. :pleased: I'm getting very similar accuracy results with my Unique load. I'm hoping to achieve the same with the American select. Time, and experimentation, will tell. Any and all input is welcomed folks.

Hi Folks; I did a search and read over several threads, here and elesewhere. I did find one suggestion of 3.5 grains of American Select for the 147 gr lead bullet. I actually found some of powder available. I was pleasantly surprised. I have been using Alliant Unique 3.9 grs for my Lone Wolf barreled Glocks 19 and 17. I really like the recoil impulse generated with this load. But alas, my Unique stock is down to about 2 pounds. In my search here and over the interweb I've found folks discussing American Select for 9mm over several years. I've just never considered it. But as the shortage of powder and primers shows no signs of abating, I guess it's time start considering it. :) Do any of you have much experience with it? Any load suggestions and experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That's interesting as Brasil and I were discussing this just yesterday. I'd definitely shoot at one of these..."dress code" or not... Thanks for posting the info Spiffy my friend.

Excellent points and explanation on the context of the genesis of IDPA DMark. Thank you. And good discussion all around. I joined IDPA in either '96 or '97...my # is in the 900's. But our local (tribal) club had hosted "Tactical Matches" for several years prior. Not "mall ninja tactical"..but trying to replicate useful real world situations. We were able to incorporate "unknown" stage, and even night shoot and BUG stages. But the sport has grown immensely in that time period, so logistically it would be next to impossible to do these days. IDPA is a sport (not training), but I would hope folks would use the venue to try and instill sound and logical practices that wouldn't get them injured in a "real world" situation. But I guess we each have our reasons for doing what we do. I'm curious to see what changes come about, and where the evolution goes. :2cents:

I thought these were illegal?
Jamie Jackson replied to Randall53's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
From the ATF website in the link above...these are in the AOW category: If you link the site and scroll down enough there is an explanation...but my limited cyberskills prevent me from being to link it directly...sorry. LOL. It's David Horowitz. I thought it was excellent satire... unfortunately some idiot staffer in D.C. will think it a great idea. They've never let logic or common sense stand in the way of meaningless legislation before. .

^^ I've done this before using .4 spl brass...Many years back. They were reasonably accurate up to 7-10 yards in my old Bulldog Pug.

Man! Sorry to hear/see you're having so much trouble with this buddy. That bites.
