Man in Clarksville pulls gun.... Permit Holder??
MacGyver replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
His permit was still listed as active as of the last pull that the Commercial Appeal did in April. Who knows? -
See the bottom of James Taranto's commentary yesterday. It's a deliberate attempt to "rebrand" to get this thing away from the president: http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304791704579210024201274360?mod=WSJ_Opinion_MIDDLETopOpinion

He definitely knew what he had. Nobody drops >$2k on a laser without doing it to impress folks at the range. As to knowing how to use it...lacking...but not so much worse than most of the other people with their newly acquired toys at the range.

Let me know if you want me to figure out how to get your old account back. PM me a current email address if you like and I'll see what I can do. -
Here's to wishing that Microsoft would stop trying so hard to remain relevant and actually use some of their enormous talent pool to actually innovate.

Any Platform Software Engineers looking for a job?

I hope someone jumps on this. -
People in the AR world are living proof that people are always willing to spend more money if you'll just show them how. Saw a guy at the range the other day that between Noveske rifle, ACOG with RMR, Laser Devices illuminator, Surefire foregrip AND light, he had no less than $7K in that rifle. I have exactly zero doubt that that rifle will contain this trigger pack.

Trigger slap or no, you figure this is $150 more than a Slidefire stock - but with an honest to goodness selector switch. I wouldn't have thought they'd have sold that many SlideFire stocks. It's nothing more than novelty, and their timing is bad, but I bet they still sell a bunch of these.

To quote the late Lewis Grizzard, "I could've headed this whole thing off, but I was intrigued so I just waited..." -
That's pretty interesting.

It sounds like y'all might have some things concerning you that needs pursuing outside of weapon selection. That said, the rules of firearm handing still apply - even in the house. Namely, "never point a weapon at something you're not willing to destroy" and "always be sure of your target and what's beyond your target." As the father of three, my wife and I used to have the same concerns. The only way we were really able to get past them was to move to a house where the children were on another level from the main portion of the house. When considering shooting inside a home, you need to be aware of not only where an intruder is, but also where everyone else is, too. I carry a J-frame like yours every day. But, inside my home I use something else. From my perspective, capacity is limited to 5 rounds and reloads are notoriously slow. The Glock is probably as easy to rack as any modern handgun out there, so if that's an issue you might have to compromise a bit. A shotgun is a good defensive weapon and may suit your needs. How old are your kids, and would it be possible to barricade yourself in with them if need be?
-
I'd definitely recommend keeping the weapon on your person where practical. Shoot one of our female moderators PackinMama a note if you need convincing.

Most will welcome children. And if you find one that doesn't welcome a mom trying to protect her kids, you need to find another shop.

Is insurance not cutting you a check?

I'd try the wood grips first and see how those suit you. No need to change them if the recoil doesn't scare you off. If you're a smaller framed woman, the wood will definitely present a smaller package for concealment.

It's a great classic pistol with some history.

I'm not sure that's a 640. At least not the current version. Is it stamped as such? I think that's a Model 49.

Both of these are reliable lighter rounds: http://www.hornady.com/store/38-Special-90-gr-FTX-Critical-Defense-lite/ http://www.midwayusa.com/product/211732/

The 640 is going to have more felt recoil than the Glock, but is a great CCW weapon assuming you're okay with trigger pull. As to recoil, I wouldn't be scared of it, but I also wouldn't start with a full house .38spl +P load. A reduced recoil .38spl might really be the right place to start for you with that pistol. The steel frame is going to soak up a fair bit of the recoil, so if you decide you can handle that okay, then you can step up to one of the hotter .38spl or .38spl +P variants and see how that treats you. Hogue makes a nice set of grips for that pistol that ought to tame it some, too. So long as you can manage the heavier double action trigger with your arthritis, I don't know that you'll find a better choice in a real defensive caliber.

The heart of the matter is that we have this weird paradox with the USPS. We force unrealistic expectations on them that no truly private company could ever make a business case for, and yet act surprised when they fail to turn a profit. I'm actually pretty supportive of the Amazon move - it allows them to service a paying customer in markets where it makes financial sense. It's going to come apart, though when 'inequality' gets thrown into the mix and a few people start complaining about their 'rights' being trampled on because they can't get their playstation games way out in the sticks on Sunday.

It makes for a rather expensive dust cover - but I've seen the work these guys do: http://leoarmory.com/ss/index.php?l=product_detail&p=304 A dust cover is flat enough and simple enough that you could probably take a standard one to a local trophy shop as well and have them do it, -
This sounds like a job for someone with insurance.

Got a note from CMT this weekend indicating that the uppers and lowers have shipped out to be coated. There are a bunch of them, so it'll take a couple of weeks. I think they're expecting to start shipping them around the 8th of December.
