  1. Said it better than most people I've seen so far.   http://youtu.be/NyYYgLzF6zU
  2. Yeah, we've been giving them weapons for years but that was when a different guy was running the show :-/ hope it doesn't come back to bite us in the butt.
  3. What he should have done is continue to press morgan on the hypocrisy of his argument. More people do die to handguns, more die to shotguns, more die to knives and bare fists than to "assault weapons" according to the FBI reports.   http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-8   The trend has also been declining since 2007. He pressed him on that at first but abandoned the angle.   He should have just said, flat out: why focus on incidents that (as tragic as they are) are very rare and ignore all the other kids that die by the hundreds and thousands, but just one or two at a time due to gangbangers and other murders.  What, they don't count? And what about sniper style shooting sprees that these laws wouldn't prevent and use regular hunting rifles? (See Texas University Belltower shooter) What about shooting sprees with grandfathered semi autos and magazines?  What about shooting sprees with shotguns which already outnumber murders using "assault rifles"? What about the fact that these guys were mentally unstable but probably would have passed a background check?   Push the argument till Morgan basically throws his hands up and admits that he supports this as one step towards a blanket gun ban and then hammer home that it's counterindicated by the constitution and his argument is therefore invalid. A crazy person who already accepts he is going to die is not something you can legislate out of existence. Nothings stopping someone from hopping into a ford and driving through a parade at 90mph -- you can't always eliminate those 1% outliers and you'll run into diminishing returns, up to and including sacrificing too much money and too many freedoms and STILL never eliminate the risk. Just take it in perspective, continue to implement best practices, and roll on. Of course the AR-15 was used in the last few shootings. It's THE MOST POPULAR RIFLE in America today. There are millions of them out there.  And you can count on one hand the number of crazies that went on sprees with them.
  4. Air rifles will work fine for small game given sufficient velocity, just make sure you buy a quality brand and have spares on hand (o rings etc), there's more to go wrong than with a simple .22.
  5. Romanian G with Beryl and Primary Arms micro dot
  6. Nice, I was looking for just this sort of thing. I want to standardize batteries and I have a Goal Zero charger setup. I can charge 4 batteries at once (AA or AAA) but a lot of headlamps use odd numbers of batteries (like 3x AAA) so something that takes 2 or 4 batteries are about ideal. That solar charger you linked looks pretty good, as long as it can recharge the batteries in an average day I'm down to try it and use it to supplement the goal zero... too many of the smaller ones seem to require several days worth of sun to charge its batteries fully.
  7. Hope law enforcement is all briefed and up to date. They usually are right?
  8. Mountain house can be found at most sporting goods stores (Dicks, etc) and Walmart. They are dehydrated, but you only get a net gain in weight savings if you have a source of water nearby where you're hiking/camping/surviving to use; if you're having to use the water you're lugging around anyway, you're not saving much if any weight. After you factor in the water, both MH and MREs end up being roughly the same (400 kcal/lb give or take) They both have their place, and you can always make your own "MRE" type meals from what you can pick up at the grocery store. They won't last as long on the shelf but great for when you're actually going to go on a trip and at least it's food you know you're going to like. Also there are plenty of lighter dehydrated meals you can make too if you don't like MH (single serving mac and cheese packets work nice in a canteen cup, then there's scalloped potatoes, ready rice, banana bread, etc).
  9. That's what I was wondering too, where the bow's place is, and how it affects things legally. If you possess a bow in a place that doesn't allow firearms (I'm thinking backpacking, camping, and such here) is that just as illegal as a firearm, or is a bow considered a recreational tool? Target practice is fun, and the emergency game getting capability is just a nice bonus that ideally we'd never have to use (because I'm sure that would bring about legal issues all on it's own, like hunting out of season and so forth. Does the law make exceptions for emergency, or would they be more like "glad you survived, now we're gonna charge you.") And if a bow is no go, what about a slingshot? Where is the line drawn? Can I possess a gilnet? Snares? ANY means of feeding myself in an emergency? Or is the spirit of the law designed to absolutely cave-man me up in order to prevent a few idiots from poaching rather than accept that some people break the law anyway and at least allow the responsible citizen the benefit of the doubt? If I'm allowed a firearm, that would absolutely be my first choice
  10. I've been meaning to get a take-down bow to keep in my kit for a while now. The Samick Sage get's pretty good reviews and was recommended on another forum for a survival pack bow. I'd like to eventually pick one up and a PVC tube suitable for storing it, a spare string, and a few arrows.
  11. Equipped.org is what got me started... I was looking at their personal survival kit comparison (which is now badly out dated) and decided I could build my own that was better. Their forums are decent too. BushcraftUSA forums has pretty good discussions as well, as does the survival section of the AR-15 forums
  12. Just wondering if anyone can break down what the state of TN requires to become a pistol / CCW instructor? Is it just a class and then an application + fee, or is there more to it than that? Would NRA instructor class work, or would it have to be TN specific?
  13. IIRC they made a double barrel .410 / .45 LC that was neat for all those coach gun mad max fantasies
  14. Mora's are a great bang for your buck. Some of the sharpest knives out of the box I've seen in a long time and with the scandi edge they're very easy to re-sharpen for novices. I have a #612 (which is a #2 classic with the lower finger guard) and a Mora Robust. Can't beat it for the price. Yes, to keep costs down the handles are cheap, the sheaths are cheap, but the part that counts (the blade) is good stuff. It's the only fixed blade without a full tang I wouldn't have a problem throwing in my hiking pack.
  15. I carry the 555bkhg (City ordnance has 3" max) and I like it. It replaced a Kershaw blur that I had lost tubing down a river. It flips open quickly, and the lock is pretty solid. The only drawback is if you have meaty hands you need to be careful when flipping it closed (the handle is short enough that you can clip your palm with the tip if you're not careful)
  16. I'm in a similar boat, I will be traveling from TN to MN shortly and will be staying there for a few months. I'll keep an eye on this thread. I wonder if there's anything else I need to know...
  17. If you're willing to go slightly larger into the BCB / SAS sized tins, you can always use a more robust pocket chainsaw type saw, which lays flat and limp so it's easy to pack http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/7428/labeledd.jpg (Copy and paste into location bar)
  18. So if I am reading this right, as per subsection D of the above, the only exception to the above rule is that parks owned by the city / county (not state parks) can still prevent concealed carry permit holders from carrying at those parks if they so choose? So a city owned park like Rotary park may not be legal to carry in, but even though it's within a city, Dunbar Cave would be fine since it's a state park
  19. So Dunbar Cave would be legal since it's a state park? Out of curiosity, assuming I am stopped by one of the employees (which shouldn't happen if I'm concealed, but just for the sake of argument) what do I tell them to convince them that their signs are not applicable? Sorry for all the questions..
  20. Sorry but to clarify, does that mean it's legal for a carry permit owner to carry in federal and state parks regardless of signage?
  21. Hey, good job! I think I was in the same class as you Looks like both you and my sister are a better shot than me, lol!
