  1. Mass is a large factor in penetration. #1 buck at ~40gr is the smallest sized shotgun pellet that consistently penetrates 12+ inches and so if you want that sort of performance you will have to make each fragment dense and heavy enough that it can do the job. Even at 40gr the large surface area of the petals would reduce penetration versus a spherical pellet. lets say we have a 5 petal design. If each petal weighed 40 gr for penetration and the core weighed 40 gr as well, you would have 240gr, which is close to a 230gr load in .45 In .40 you would be down to 3 petals + base for 160gr or 4 petals + base for 200g In 9mm... well it's prob not worth bothering with unless you go ahead and split the whole thing up into 3 sections like the old quik shok
  2. Depending on the penetration depth of the fragments this IMO has the potential to be more effective than conventional FMJ and JHP rounds on clean front to back shots, and still capable but less effective on shots through intermediate barriers (shoulders, hands and arms held up defensively etc). Will of course make a nasty shallow wound regardless
  3. I had a sharpener that used that method before, what sets the spyderco apart from similar designs?
  4. Looks great! Is your scope offset from the centerline?
  5. Good on them! Honestly the best way to solve the immigration and much of the drug issue here is to fix mexico. Corruption begets corruption unfortunately but if that cycle can be broken for a generation then they could see some real changes. Standard of living would improve and they wouldn't need to leave to seek better opportunity. Like post war japan they may even get to the point where we end up much more successful economically and find some niche to become lucrative trade partners and it's proximity permits lower costs compared to shipping from china. More importantly it serves as a buffer between the US and central/south america. Alas for something like that to occur I am afraid it would take a long time. If they aren't ready to stand up for themselves we would be hard pressed to be able to do much. I'm glad to see citizens there fed up and taking a stand especially after reports of complete lawlessness in some towns.
  6. Doesn't look like the petals penetrate deep. If each fragment penetrated 12+ inches I would be sold
  7. The resolution is low of course, and at night you won't have the benefit of the object outline provided by the second camera, but if you can see signatures a few hundred feet across a backyard into the woodline I'd call it a win (especially at the pricepoint of $300 something dollars).  Target recognition might be an issue but knowing _something_ is there would be nice, blob or not.   Wish they made a handheld monocular version like golf scope sized.
  8. Pretty neat, and you could cook insects ;)
  9. I often wonder why glock or other polymer manufacturers don't go with a metal trigger guard so it can be thinner, thus allowing just a little more room for your fingers to get a little higher and more secure grip. Sometimes just getting a little higher and tighter can make a big difference. Disappointing to hear about some of the early reliability issues, especially given the delay in introducing the pistol, I hope they get that worked out.

    Glock 42

If it's as reliable as other glocks then I don't mind them coming to the game late. Better that than release a piece of junk too early.
  11.   The rail was a Troy Alpha so that was good. Someone on another forum mentioned that they think the barrel is mossberg though it has no branding on it. So far it's run ok, but due to ammo cost I've only put 3 magazines through it thusfar.  I'm ok with it, I have another BCG I can throw in if it acts up but I just like to know the specs for my own peace of mind.  Was a great price so that's why I went in blind.
  12. Never heard of ATI before I bought one of their uppers on a black friday special. Nobody on their forum section on the AR15 forums could tell me who made the bolt carrier group or specs on it.   Which probably explains why I had never heard of them.
  13. Dumb question but if you already had a large amount of cheaper ammo (like wolf) is it possible to pull the bullets and replace them with 77gr SMK?
  14. No worries! The gas block came with the assembly no brand markings. Someone on another forum said they had mossberg barrels.
  15.   Depends on how accurate you're wanting... naturally if you want ragged holes you'll want a magnified optic, but remember some folks in the mil were expected to hit targets out to 500 yards with irons.  Most red dots have a much finer dot than the width of the front sight post so you can be even more precise and consistent.  Having good eyesight certainly helps!   Just keep working on the fundamentals and it'll tighten up.   My mindset is that hitting "minute of center mass" (ie, about the size of a paper plate) on a man sized target out to 300m is good enough (even though my rifle is capable of much tighter groups than that) and technically you shouldn't need any optic at all to be able to do that, so magnified or not any optic is a plus.
  16. Thanks for the comments! The AR-15 is a slim gun, so it always frustrated me that most of the hand guards and quad rails out there had such a large diameter, just wasn't comfortable to me. That's one of the reasons I went with the alpha rail.  It does heat up a little faster than some others but I'm happy with it so far.   As far as the parts list...   I got the upper on sale at Primary Arms, it's a 16" ATI with 9" Troy Alpha rail. I never heard of the company, and there isn't much information out there.  Ideally I would have done a BCM build, but it was a good price and I didn't want to wait another year gathering parts.  The upper had everything including BCG so I snagged it.   Lower is a T-15 with your standard M4 stock and Magpul trigger guard.   The optic is a Primary Arms micro red dot (the one they had on special black friday) and 3x Long Eye Relief Magnifier with flip to side mount. BUIS are magpul. I prefer mid length but so far I'm happy with it's simplicity and slimness.  I'm eventually going to replace the optic with a real aimpoint micro, and plan on changing the grip and stock in the future as well.  I have been thinking about weapon lights but not sure if I'll add one to this build.
  17. Most of this was from Primary Arms (I went a little crazy on their black friday sales lol)
  18. I saw some of my carry ammo (9mm HST) for the first time so I am glad they are starting to carry some of the good stuff!
  19. Never tried one, but we have one in the backyard about 50' from the porch.  It's like a feeder, there are deer there all the time!
  20. Irons and red dot... Primary arms is the bomb.
  21. My philosophy of use: other than range toy if my rifle is used in anger it will prob be in a home defense scenario. So red dot is indicated to me, but I like the idea of a magnified optic for general purpose / ranch type use so I went with a micro red dot with flip to side magnifier. On a 1x-4x do you have to ensure your head is positioned for the proper eye relief even at 1x as you would expect with a scope, or is it forgiving like a red dot? I mean technically we should all be able to hit 300-500m with irons right? ;)
  22. An AR-15 pistol would be legal under the law wouldn't it?
  23. Looks like a 1? And a symbol I'm not sure about.
