Both of my 20-something sons did a few rounds of the P90X. Neither of them could move for a week afterward.

Who elses property taxes/appraisal went up?
analog_kidd replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in General Chat
I've got a rental house that, due to taxes and insurance, the mortgage payment went up $20 a month. My personal residence went up about $15. Both are in Oak Ridge. I have another rental house I bought for $45k, and I have an official bank appraisal for that ammount (even though it really is worth a lot more). The county/city appraised it for $75k. When I went to the county to bring to their attention the fact that the house is not what it once was and should be appraised for less (and lower my tax burden), they said "we'll take it under consideration", then they promptly forgot about me. Guarantee if I said "I just added a swimming pool, maybe you should increase my appraisal" the paperwork would be done by close of business. -
God bless you, Rick Monday. You are a great American!

Heard this show was coming back on Discovery Chanel, so I put it in the DVR. It's entertaining if nothing else. This season starts out with the Military guy "simulating" a backcountry wound and cauterizing it by lighting black powder in the gash. He tough, I'll give him that, maybe not too smart, but tough.

Here's a link to some pretty impressive video footage of the initial tsunami wave: http://freevideocoding.com/flvplayer.swf?file=http://flash.vx.roo.com/streamingVX/63056/1458/20110311_japan_wave_successions_sky_1000k.mp4&autostart=true

Did anybody catch Obama's speech Monday, justifying why we are in Libya? He kept saying that "it's in our best intrests to fight this fight" but never said exactly why. I also heard him say that this evil Qaddafi was attacking his citizens and the people had no way to defend themselves. Kind of thought that was ironic, since he wants to disarm us. But of course America would never be ruled by a dictator or someone who doesn't care about Americans. Right?

I think here in Oak Ridge, it airs on The Sportsman's Channel. Unfortunately that channel is part of a package you have to pay extra for. What irritates me is the package is all sports channels, like basketball, football, etc., and then this one other channel (Sportsman's) that shows hunting and firearms related content. It's totally unlike the rest of the other channels. It's almost like someone sat down trying to figure out what channels to package up, they saw "Sportsman's Channel" and thought it must be a channel about sports. I don't think they even looked at it. I've been trying to find these shows online. Anybody know of a link?

We do the same bicuit on a stick trick, but we use squeeze butter and honey to fill the hole.

BakePacker We've used a bakepacker since I was a kid. Put one of these in a pot, fill with a little water, then mix up in a oven bag some kind of cake mix, or cornbread. Badically anything that you bake can be made in one. cover the thing, add some heat. the steam acts like an oven and bakes the food. Since you cook it in the bag, there is no cleanup We usually make some kind of cobbler by adding pie filling.

The most important thing to learn from the Japan disaster
analog_kidd replied to Glenn's topic in Survival and Preparedness
You know, I've been trying to ask myself "What would I do if I was over there" ever since this thing hit them. I've started storing some food, and I've got about three ways to purify water, not including boiling. But what keeps nagging me about this situation is that all of their stuff is gone! Everything. Their house, possessions, the saved food, supplies, etc. Guess about the only thing to do would be to make sure you have a good bug out bag, and grab it on the way out. Having said that, the BOB would not be first on my mind. Getting my family to safety would be. So who knows if I'd even think to grab it. -
Cedar Bluff Dick's Getting Out of Hunting/Fishing
analog_kidd replied to JAB's topic in Hunting and Fishing
The Knoxville Dicks is located on N. Peter's Dr. In my family we don't call it "Dicks" we call it "Dicks on Peters". Makes me giggle every time -
Find a copy of Jeff Cooper's "Principals of Personal Defense". It's a short read (maybe an hour), but has a lot of great info on situational awareness. Also, finding ordinary objects to carry that could be used as a weapon is ideal in your case. Some have mentioned a flashlight or cane. Find something you can carry that nobody would even give a second look at.

I have a friend that uses CFL's exclusively, but never buys them anymore. Most of the name brand bulbs come with a warranty. My friend will save the reciept, and mark each bulb with the reciept number and date of purchase. He say's they never last as long as they are supposed to, so he sends them back for free replacement. For the most part, I don't mind the CFL's, and I have been buying them when my old bulbs die. I dislike how they take a while to warm up. I'm used to the light coming on full power right away. I also don't like the color of the light. Maybe it's just my brain being accustom to the the incandescent color. Probably kids from today will see an incandescent bulb 20 years from now and think they look wierd. What I really don't like is the Govt. telling me I HAVE to buy them.

What irks me about TDOS is that they charge you double for your license just for getting the endorsement. Been a while since I renewed, but I think my wife and I both went down to DOS, and she was charged $27 for her license (no endorsement) and I was charged over $50 (with endorsement). Seems like TN has found another way of making $$$ off of the backs of her citizenry. Would think motorcyclers would pay less, since we don't tear up the roads as much as cars, plus we use less gas, so we're greener.

Well, I've been planning on this trip for a while now. I have told a few people about it, and a some are definitely coming. So, I'm still planning on heading out on the trail. I'm willing to lead the trip if anyone else still wants to come. I'm not a seasoned "survivalist", and I won't be able to teach anyone the ways of Survivor Man or anything, but I do go backpacking several times a year, and have been camping since I was a baby, so I'm no stranger to the outdoors. And I am familiar with the area. So, if anyone still wants to go, send me a PM and we'll set something up.

My son in a kayak video for a car commercial

No, didn't even get paid. Just the bragging rights of being in a TV video doing something cool. -
My son in a kayak video for a car commercial
analog_kidd replied to analog_kidd's topic in General Chat
Yes, Baby Falls. We were going to do Bald River Falls, but it was covered in ice, with no way to climb up. -
So my son is going to be in a commercial for a car dealership. We went to the Tellico River and ran this waterfall over and over. He got this link to the rough footage. I'm the old guy getting the "instructions" from him. Funny part is I taught him everything hew knows about kayaking. http://player.vimeo.com/video/20066155

I would think the brine would work well AFTER the snow event. Once the roads are coverd in snow and ice, and there is no more in the forecast. But I've always wondered about the logic of using it before a good snowing.

I keep getting those offers too. I'm pretty sure it's because I subscribe to Guns and Ammo. I was going to sign up, but I read the fine print and they will automatically charge your credit card every year unless you intentionally cancel the subscription prior to renewal. Others may not find that a big deal, but I didn't like it, so I passed.

I've never bought one of these papers, but I see them every where, and I see people buying them all the time. Whoever thought up the idea is a stinking genius!

I usually do 20%, add it to the bill and round everything up to the next whole dollar or two. One place I'm always unsure about is a buffet. I go get my own plate, and serve myself, sometime even get my own drink. Not sure what the norm is there, but I at least leave 10-15%. We like to eat TGI Fridays takeout. They had this curbside to go service, where you call it in and they bring it out to your car. Our local one now changed the rules, so that you have to come in and get it. Some servers still will bring it out, so I have learned to ask, however most don't. If they bring it out to me, they are getting a tip. If I have to go in and pick it up, forget it. I figured the cook did the real work, and I did my own serving, they aren't getting anything. If they don't like it they can take it up with management, or continue to bring it out like the few who do.

Didn't expect that!
