  1.   All true.   I worked for the Smokies for most of a decade.  Part of that was as a VUA at Elkmont.  Rest of it was in Fire Management.   Just curious about who your folks are.  I know a couple from Oak Ridge who were hosts for many years at Elkmont.   Will
  2. Never say never. I have reloaded AL cases. Just to see if it could be done. It's been years and years, but to the best of my memory, it was either .38 Spl., or .357 Mag. CCI Blazer AL. I had to punch through the case head with the decapping pin since the cases are Berdan primed. Fortunately, AL is soft and I didn't break a pin. Also fortunately, the CCI Berdan primers were the same size as standard small pistol primers. I loaded light loads. It worked. Once. Your mileage may vary. I don't recommend anyone else try it. I wasn't the first to try, either. I read about someone else doing it on Rec.guns on the old Usenet. I say again. I DO NOT RECOMMEND RELOADING ALUMINUM CASES. Leave that sort of stuff to tinkerers who have learned how to keep all our digits intact when doing something iffy.
  3. I bet he ticketed the tailgater, too. Right? Right?! Note the sarcasm. If he did, it would be the first time I've seen it happen.
  4. Thanks for that info. I hadn't tried it yet and that saves me the trouble.
  5. I have a partial can of denatured alcohol that I'm going to try. May work, may not. As soon as i can retrieve some of my cast boolits, I'll give it a try and post results.
  6. Haven't seen the new one, but neither of the original Evil Dead movies can beat the sequel "Army of Darkness".   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_d4I_VYDj8   Probably my favorite movie quote ever, BTW.
  7. Just curious...  have you fired an AR-style rifle?   :stir:
  8. Oops, forgot to add...   It sticks in at least 2 SKS's that I know of.  Presumably, the lacquer melts and sticks to a hot chamber wall.  Clean the chamber and it works for a few rounds.  Then, when it gets dirty, the rounds become very hard to extract.  Rinse and repeat.   Haven't shot any for many years.  Still have a few hundred rounds.
  9. Yep.  Plastic core training ammo.  It will not cycle my SKS.  And it is very corrosive.   At least that's what it LOOKS like.  Does it FEEL lighter than normal?
  10. I've never used a left-hand bolt action. I shoot lefty, but have learned to use right hand bolt actions. I don't think I would want to get used to any LH action. As it is, I can pick up any regular rifle and be comfortable using it. I do have a left-eject pump shotgun. I have only used it a couple times. It just feels weird. In short, I will stick with what I know. Will
  11. Wow. I got one if those when I was a teenager. I don't think I have seen another one since then. Can't give you velocities from the rifle, but I worked up some loads with VV N110 and 158 gr SWC that is 1500 fps from an 8-3/8" barrel S&W. I bet it would be a good load for the rifle. H110 would probably be very similar. Your post made me want to dig out that old Savage just for old times' sake. Will
  12. Crossfit much?
  13. You can also get lanolin at a baby store like Babies-r-us, but it isn't cheap.
  14. Don't know. I hate talking to people. So a smartphone is a blessing for me. I'd rather play games and surf the 'net than talk.
  15. Gotcha.     I've just always had better luck when dealing with tight things (pins, stuck cases, etc.) by pressing rather than striking.  Perhaps use Kroil and then press it out the way Jonnin mentioned above.  It will probably destroy the decapping pin, but that's better than a whole new die.
  16. Try the stuck case remover first.     FIRST,  spray some Kroil into the case and the die.  If you don't have any, use WD-40 or a good penetrating oil.     Now, while that is soaking, go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy: - A 1/4"x20 tap and whatever drill bit is the correct size for that. - Several 1/4" fender washers. The hole is 1/4" and the washer is probably 1 1/4"-1 1/2". - A 1/4" hex head bolt. Get a couple different lengths.  Maybe 1", 1and a quarter, 1 and a half. Make sure you have the tools to turn the drill, tap and bolt. Drill a hole through the primer pocket into the case.  Then tap it with the 1/4" tap. Put the die into the press upside-down.  Thread it in from the bottom with the case head up.  Leave plenty of space between the top of the case head the the top of the press, meaning that you only want to turn it 2 or 3 threads into the press.   Put 2 or 3 or 4 fender washers on top of the press over the die.  Put one of the 1/4" bolts through the washers and thread it into the case head.   Make sure that the bolt head is against the washers when is is JUST threaded through the case head.  You may need to use a shorter bolt, more washers or turn the die down away from the washers some.   Use your wrench to turn the bolt into the case.  It should pull the case out of the die.   I've only used this method twice, but it has worked perfectly both times.   Good luck,   Will
  17. I think the Russians still do. Or at least they did in the '90s from what I've read. I have one if these in the BOB. Or GHB. Whatever you want to call it. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/187643/cold-steel-special-forces-shovel-steel-blade-hardwood-handle
  18. "Naked and Afraid" was more interesting.
  19. Well, George Zimmerman's worked pretty well for him.     :hiding:
  20. I've been saying the same thing for years. We don't allow natural selection to work anymore. It's why we have a population filled with mindless morons. There is a major piece in the Knox News Sentinel this morning about Park Rangers and the SARs they do in the Smokies (where I used to work). As an aside, the article prominently features a good friend of mine, Chuck. Anyway, having seen firsthand the situations people put themselves in and then EXPECT someone else to come and get them out of it, I came to the conclusion that what SHOULD happen, but won't, is that a few of them should be left to suffer the consequences of their actions. Perhaps that would send a message to future idiots that if you do something stupid in the woods, you may just die from it. Of course, that will never happen. For one thing, the Rangers enjoy doing what they do. And they are very good at it. Having known quite a few Rangers, I can say that they are the most professional and competent LEOs that I have encountered. I just wish that more time, resources and money were used protecting people from the idiots rather than protecting the idiots from themselves. Sorry for the rambling rant. To try to stay on topic, I'll most likely watch the Canyon crossing. Just in case he falls. :) Will
  21. So you're saying there will be sequels? Or this is the first of a series?
  22. I have left powder in mine for months. I always label the dispenser with the type of powder in it. The worst that has happened is the clear plastic gets discolored. After reading what happened to Dolomite's dispenser, I'll most likely stop leaving powder in it.
  23. I had a coupon, so I picked up one of these at Kroger. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0062QJLSI/ It's marketed as a replacement for charcoal in your grill. It burns for 35 to 45 minutes. Hot enough to grill burgers over. If I fashion a lid to extinguish it, it may be reusable. Don't know yet, haven't tried it. As an emergency firestarter, it should get really wet wood going in a few minutes. Or if one were to want to have a fire without smoke, this might be a good option. I'm going to put one in my BOB. Definitely don't buy them from Amazon. Kroger's regular price is about half that. And I used a $2 off coupon. Will
  24. Oh man. I'm really going to miss his books.
