our discover card has the 1 time use numbers, its great. Its also a feature that is going away this fall .... sigh. My advice is to apply for one with a very low limit for use online. This can be difficult (they like high limit cards), sometimes the easy thing to do is open a small checking account, put money in as you need it (online transfer from your real account is simple with online banking) then use the debit card. Someone steals it, they cannot use it, no money in the account!

There are civil war BP shooters groups; an ex-co-worker took me on a few but I just never got into BP. They had to wear sorta period military uniforms and sorta did the role playing thing but by and large it was just a marksmanship group. I do not have a way to get in touch with them right now, but if you ask around you may find more. They do travel quite a bit for the shoots, but most of the time no more than a few hours away.

The comment as he ran about clinging to guns and bibles... odd for a pro gunner, and odd for a supposed christian, all in all a very odd statement. I cannot help but think the gun-runner project was to enable fearmongers to produce anti gun bills. I cannot help but think if he could get away with it he would sign the UN anti gun treatys. I think the 9-11 pro gun trends have the anti gunners hiding, waiting for their chance to raise the issue again. So far, its political suicide to make an issue of gun ownership outside state office, and even that only works in a couple of states.

You got a new gun, no matter when it was made. I have sold a couple of unfired guns to stores that sold them as new guns, and that was OK by me: they were new guns, even if used in the sense that someone owned them, and I would gladly buy such a weapon and pay for it as if it were new. If I recognized its age, I would try for a deal, but thats just the business.

Well to be fair shooting it 1h I was using low end ammo, not 300 grain hunting loads or 200 grain +p defense loads or any of that! Still, the "weak" stuff is too much for me in my blackhawk (one handed) -- so take your typical big 44 revolver recoil, cut that to about 75%, and that is what we are talking about here. And as you said, think of *that* as a 45 1911 push, not a glock 9mm jerk/slap. Or, perhaps, its probably about like downsizing to 44sp in a big 44mag revolver. Im sure the 50 is a little worse, but rather than shoot a 9mm they could have handed her a 357 DE with medium loads, ANY healthy adult, even a smallish woman, can handle the smaller caliber weapon with a modest load.

Wow, for that a hot chick better deliver your text messages telegram style... Not judging, just sayin. -
I couldnt make heads or tails of the video, no sound though maybe they were talking? It looks like she shot the DE up close at a big target and hit it once, then got spooked by the recoil and missed the rest? And her friend got some blast wave? Not much of a video, has tv really gotten this bad (I havent watched tv since the 80s). Nevermind, I see the comments online... they swapped it for a 9mm and she is faking the recoil? Lol. The DE does not have much recoil, I can shoot mine onehanded bullseye style and I am not strong, the design eats most of the .44's energy and the 50 probably is only moderately worse, the 357 is probably gentle as a lamb. Its noisy, but its not a harsh gun, small plastic 9mms jump around more.

welcome! I shoot up at the cleveland club a bit, and just ordered a customized cz rami. I like cz guns, would not mind having more of them eventually.

Much of the USSR and to some extent china carried the 9x18 round as a military or police (is there a difference in these places?) sidearm. It is a 380 in all but the name (with their surplus ammo). It served these places well for decades as a sidearm, adding to the use of 380s in europe. It must work; such forces would not have accepted the caliber if it did not.

Sister-in-law purse stolen in Wal-Mart ( Halls, Tn )
Jonnin replied to TnShooter83's topic in General Chat
All I have is a prepaid wallmart phone. Its $7 a month IIRC (technically you have to put 15 or 20 $ on it every 3 months or it dies). It cannot take pictures, all it can do is make phone calls really. Guess I am not like all the other americans who pay $50 a month for a phone, in this one instance, I would have been screwed if I wanted a picture (unless a sight picture counts...). As for the sex offender database, a ton of not too major crimes get people on that for life. Several people have gotten naked at the wrong place or time and been put on it (I think if a kid happens to see you nekkid, you are now a sex offender) as have a number of others for fairly minor behavior. Its next to worthless when it lumps a drunken streaker with a rapist. -
you can get a S&W 22a for 250 NIB or less used, its as good as the ruger.

Im not sure law enforcement or military use count. The masses use them because a few made that choce FOR them. If I were a LEO I would probably have to carry a glock too, and they are one of the gun types that I like least yet I would be sitting there as a "glock user" statistic. Yes, it says a lot that these guns were selected for duty service, but how much of that is economics or lack of options (was the military married to the 1911 because it was one of 4 or 5 options in 1912 and did they stick with it because they had millions of parts and guns up until 1970?) Or do LEO departments pick glocks because they are fairly cheap with very good reliability? If a LEO department could spend $5k on each unit, would they still buy glocks? I do not know, but the point is that large groups forced to use these weapons do not prove all that much to me. Reading the thread really does make one think about it though. Rethinking it, while I hate them, if my choice were a standard 1911 vs a glock, the glock would win for the capacity. If I could have a high cap modern 1911, that would win over the glock. It really depends on what the gun was for, no glock is suitable for me as a CCW, and only the most modern bastard children of the 1911 would work for ccw for me.

Heh, I am not in the closet really, even Root only got a 73% match to my views which is really pretty bad. Mostly, the test confirms that no one who is running (and a number who are not, on this test) would get my vote if there were a decent candidate. Basically I am republican on the big issues (taxes, economy, etc) and libertarian on the social issues (dope, gay rights, etc). This thing had a number of social issues that really skewed the results, but those things just are not as important to me right now.... right now, the economy takes a priority over legal dope or gay marriage for me and probably will for the next 2 presidential elections. I can't afford, literally, to vote on social issues right now. And the dope thing is very questionable to me... before I vote to legalize anything I want to hear a plan on how it will be taxed, quality controlled, and how related crimes (addict theft/prostitution etc, home grown/made, etc) will be handled, IE a full plan not a "half baked" plan, pardon the pun

I got a WHO AGAIN: wayne allen root followed by ron paul and newt. Root got 73%, paul 70%, and newt 67%. Which is no mystery to me since I do not like ANY of them. Palin got 51% for me. Bauchman got 42%, almost as bad as obama at 39%. Perry is behind obama at 35% and huntsman is the lowest GOP guy at 31%. Rock bottom was Hillary & Bloomberg in the low 20%s. Guess I need to see who this root guy is... Makes sense looks like he is a libertarian. I agree with them on many issues, but I will not vote for someone who cannot win and rarely get to pick one on a ballot.
-
The obama pic has been found to be from age 18 and perry may not be exactly 22, there is some guesswork being done on the actual photo dates. As I recall important DOD subcontractors can avoid the draft but their work has to be important enough, not just run of the mill stuff. Early computer science probably counted.

For anyone struggling Steve Jobs: America's Greatest Failure:
Jonnin replied to JG55's topic in General Chat
I hope he has not taken a turn for the worse. I don't like his policys (the encrypted music stuff, the anti free speech internet, and so on) but I respect him a lot as a pioneer in the computer industry and he has a great attitude (he is known to respond to emails in person, for example, and when he fails, he tries again and learns from mistakes). I remember "next", but not lisa. We had a bunch of next machines, it was some sort of oddball setup that supposedly could run both microsoft and unix software and the gui was unlike either one at the time, it was a difficult to use system. And of course I remember the IIE, never had one but it was in the schools and other kids had them. I had a typewriter, lol -- my parents couldnt see any use for a computer (and to be honest I just wanted to play games on it). I hope he lives to be over 100 without a relapse, but this news makes me worry about him... -
Oh, if you wanted a sub for the match/lighter part, then yea a bullet is good, if noisy. How about a magnifying glass + sun or similar (did you know a clear water bottle filled so it has no air bubble will work as a magnifier?), friction based stuff like strong twine/cord/yarn etc. Ive done the string and the magnifier ones, but never fooled with a bullet. I have never managed to do it with the 2 sticks method ( or bow and stick, whatever the proper terminology for this is), but have seen it done when I was a scout. A 9 volt or larger battery --- you can spark that to light up a good fuel like the 151 or gas or something, but I doubt it would light kindling. Static electriciy would work for a very good fuel same as a battery, of course.

Enemy at the Gates Mosin Mania Shoot Nov 6th, Como MS

Dang, if they would just open it to similar mil surp bolt actions I would do it but don't have a mosin. Too picky, I look at them at shows but none has spoken to me yet. -
Im not a fan of gunpowder or similar (fireworks, wood dust, whatever) as it just does a whoosh and is gone. You want something that burns for a while and is easily ignited, so you can get the fire going from that, not a flash. Anything gunpowder can ignite can just be lit off with a match or lighter. Now, if you didnt have a match or lighter, this is a possible substitute.

Sister-in-law purse stolen in Wal-Mart ( Halls, Tn )

Current news here has the same deal, some guy is grabbing purses at the walmarts. For a real eye opener, try this at your home and work addresses... https://www.crimereports.com/ . Mine today shows 1 rape, 11 assaults, 7 burgles, 11 thefts, 11 vehicle break ins, and more all in about the 1 mile radius between my workplace (using the default date range) and home (they are close together). Only the rape is unusual, the rest is just another week in chatt town. -
What I like to call drip plastic ... certain plastics will burn and drop a flaming goo that will in turn start a fire on damp wood etc. One good source of this is many type of dental floss, another is certain types of grocery bags, but do not over-use it as you don't want to breathe the smoke or taint your food, just drip a few times onto the kindling as you start up. Steel wool has a flammable coating that can make a super hot "coal" of metal long enough to make a fire as well, same thing do not breathe the fumes or cook over it until that stuff is burnt off though, yuck! Pine sap is great as you noted, a green pinecone is awesome to put into a bag to use later as they are full of the sap when green. A candle works great if the wind is not too harsh, one of the bright, flammable wax sort that burn up fast (usully a stick candle) is best. A can is great to shield against the wind to get one started in a harsh environment, but they have to be just right, with some air holes and deep enough to not create a vortex from wind over the top of the can. 151 rum is my favorite soak in fuel, it will soak in and burn and the fumes are not terribly dangerous -- besides, if the fire wont start, it will still keep you warm

I have not seen the flash rust, but only shot corrosive a few times, its too much trouble for me. The primer salts vary a little (there are 3 or 4 salts formed from various types, I think?) but all dissolve in any water of any temprature. If super hot water flash rusts your gun, use warm or even cold water, any of it will dissolve the salts so the important thing is to get it flushed and dry ASAP. I do not think soap helps with the corrosion, but it will help with the soot and other compounds that need to be cleaned out and unless you over-soap it does not hurt the water's ability to dissolve and flush the salts out. If shooting BP, if the powder contains sulpher (home-made powder may??), it makes acid which is a different issue than the salts. Water still works for this. Pretty sure modern BP does not have this problem but the recipes to make it often do.

I love mine. I wish mine did not have the 2 dot system sights, but its flawless, accurate, and a pleasure to shoot. Trigger could be better but I can pull it in SA mode well enough. I think you made a great choice, that design has been around for a long time for a good reason!

there are tons of printable targets online, google it. You can get some fairly cheap reactive targets like the rubber groundhogs (rotate 360 when hit) or metal gongs or resetting targets for the .22. They last a long time with a small caliber but its still going to be around $30 or so initially, depends on what type you get. You can make some good ones as well, one we had was golfballs on a string (use a small eye bolt or something) dangled down, when you hit them they wind up around whatever they are hung on, like a U wire/rod stuck in the ground or whatever. Skeet clays are very cheap to hang up & bust. But a .22 will not break them if you hit it in the center, gotta hit the edges. Any sort of hard container filled & sealed with water or the like will split open when hit even with a .22. It works better (more dramatic) if you have no air in them, so you fill them to overflowing then put the cap on tight to get a bigger reaction when hit. Soda cans work I suppose but that just seems wasteful to me. If you fill an empty soda can with water it will split open when hit but not as exciting as a shaken one. If you think he will like the colors, use the food coloring. It wont change anything apart from the color, and at 19 he should be amused and able to handle it. This is really on YOU: you have to decide if it will upset him or his units and you have to deal with them if they get angry, so only you can decide what is a problem. Clear water and watching the junk split open and jump around should be sufficient for the first time out anyway, that is pretty cool the first time.

It does not have a grip safety. The safety has a positive lock, a ball bearing on a spring that pops into a socket when its on safe, and it takes a bit of force to move it back to fire. Not saying it will never, ever drop to fire in your pocket after being bumped or something, but its not easy to do and a holster does wonders to ensure that it is safe. The biggest problem I have with mine is a hard knock to my pocket can release the magazine, it drops about 1/4 an inch out the bottom of the gun and I have to casually put my hand in my pocket to push it back in. Its something I quietly check on if anything hits the gun thru my clothes. If worried about this style of carry, I would chamber it and leave it uncocked, but everyone has to go with their own comfort level. I see NO way this gun can fire if the hammer is down. While I am a fan of no holster carry for some guns, this design is not one that I feel comfortable doing that with. My px4, sure, the long DA pull for the first shot prevents accidental trigger pull. My makarov, same thing. But not the 238 if cocked and locked. If I go without a holster for this gun, it will be hammer down carry. I forget where you are LW, but if you are near you are welcome to try mine.
