Cool photo shop. JATOs are only used on take off though.

Did you check out the video? They got a Herc to take off from a carrier wthout JATOs.

Speaking of which, do we still have JATOs in the arsenal? I haven't heard anyone mention them since the early 90's.

The early plans looked at using C-130's landing at the soccer stadium and having the helicopters drop everyone off there. Then the 130's would use a JATO take off to get out. I don't know where they planned to land.

That idea was scrapped and Rangers with the spport of 3 AC-130's were going to capture a nearby airport where C-141's would evacuate everyone to Egypt. The helicopters were to be left behind with demolition charges.

The C-130's role was to deliver fuel to the refueling point where the major disaster struck. Sadly, the mission had already been given an abort order as they had lost 3 of the 8 helicopters on the way in to mechanical problems and 6 were required.
