Ok girls and guys, fess up. In a combat situation are you using the sights, ala "flash sight picture" or do you intend to point shoot.

Whichever you choose, what is your best shooting drill to reinforce your technique?

BTW, I agree with Cooper. I sight my handguns in at 25 yards off the bench with my best ammo...let the plinking stuff fall where it may. My favorite drill is to let someone else load my mags with 6 rounds and from a holster, draw and perform a mozambique or failure to stop drill at 5 yards, or thereabouts.

I had to guess, seeing as I've never been in a "combat situation", but if I find myself in one, I intend to use my sights and that is how I train. I'm interested in seeing responses from those that have actually "been there, done that."

That about sums up my situation as well. I voted sights.

I carry a GLOCK, so I'd prolly just shoot myself first. :tinfoil:

Never had to do it, hope I never will, and I further hope I have the intestinal fortitude and distance from attacker to use my sights.

Sights? At the contemplated distance I won't even be holding the gun in front of me.

In IDPA situations, if the target is close, like under 6 feet, I do not use sights but just point. Anything further and I get a sight picture. Really far out requires careful aiming and stance, preferably steadying my hand on some wall or door frame.

A combat situation? Better use the sights.

But for self-protection, it would depend on the distance and timing. The extra 1/4 second to get into a decent stance probably won't make a difference, but if they are right on you, you may not have that option.

My opinion may not matter, since I currently don't even get the option of defending myself, but here's mine.

It depends on the situation. I say 7-8 yards is sight, less than that is point. Any more, I'll see about stance and supports.

A good self defense rule of thumb is,,,

If the target is wider than the slide or frame of your firearm, point shoot. If the slide or frame of your firearm is wider than your target, aim.

The reality is, during a Body Alarm Reaction (BAR) while you are in a lethal confrontation, your eyes will be locked and focused on the threat, often a weapon in the attacker's hand. Training to look at and shoot Center of Mass is going to be hard enough. You will not be looking at the front sight. IT is not the threat! The higher your level of fear, the smaller the front sight gets. Again, training is the key.

The good news is, for a civilian, you will likely shoot at five feet or less. This does not mean to not practice the front sight drill. One should also practice point shooting at close ranges as well.
