"Good" Entry 1911

The Tarus PT1911 is what I bought when I was looking to buy either a Cot Gold Cup nor a Kimber. I like the way it felt and the light trigger pull. It came standard with the light rail. The only complaint that I have with the PT1911 is that it is too fun to shoot!

My list, as far as what I'd buy in an entry-level 1911:

1) Rock Island

2) Para GI

3) American Classic

4) Used Springfield MilSpec

Any opinions on what barrel length I should get? I like the weight and feel of the 4" barrel, but have never shot the 5".

Depends on what you looking to do with it. If a range gun, not for carry, I'd go 5". Some folks do carry 5", but most will carry a Commander length (4.25" or 4").

My first was a Colt Gov. model. Then a Gold cup, then a Kimber CDP, then a Springy Micro compact, then a Kimber TRL, and then a Springy Black SS Combat. This is how it starts. I bought the Colt 70 series about 25 yrs ago. Wouldn't let any one of them go. I carry the Micro except when roughing it then I pack a XD40 sc. $400 scratches don't hurt nearly as bad as the $800 ones.

I shot the RIA's, Taurus, Springfield, and Para's before buying my Kimber used. I was shopping in the $700 range. However, I decided that I would spend more on a 1911. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Kimber snob and if buying new would have been proud to own any of the above. My decision was driven by the knowledge that I wanted a dependable carry gun from day one. Everyone advised firing 500+ rounds in a new 1911 before carrying. I factored that additional $200+ in ammunition into my purchasing decision. I was able to find a local gunsmith who basically buys, breaks-in, and sells because he likes new and different. My gain.

Good luck with your purchase, and as stated earlier, welcome to the 1911 family.

Well gotta say thanks for all the feedback. It was quite a lot more than I expected. Looks like I will probably go for the Rock Island, but will definitely be keeping my eyes out for a used upper end 1911.

And by all means, dont stop sending feedback.
