If you are selling your personal firearm to an other individual you don't need to go through any FFL. It is your property and you can do with it what you want.

I was under the impression that handguns that cross state lines have to go through an FFL.

Long guns too. You can purchase a long gun from an out of state FFL and bring it home.

You have to take possession of a handgun from an in-state FFL. If you buy out of state, the handgun has to be transferred to a FFL in your state of residence.

A rule of thumb is any gun that crosses state lines is going to require a FFL to get involved to stay legal. There are exceptions in the case of wills, etc.

That is 100% incorrect. By federal law, if you are selling a handgun to a resident of a state other than your own, you MUST ship or deliver it to an FFL in the buyer's home state.
